How to Check Network Traffic with Automation Scripts

A practical TShark workflow for bounded packet captures, filters, field extraction, safe automation, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use TShark to capture traffic from an authorized interface, save a bounded packet trace, and extract the fields or statistics your script needs. Start by checking the interface and permissions, apply a narrow capture filter when possible, and analyze the saved file separately. This makes results easier to parse and review than printing verbose packet details from a live capture.

Choose what the script needs to learn

Before capturing, define the question and limit the collection to what can answer it. Decide which interface to observe, which host, port, or protocol matters, how long to collect, and what the script should produce.

  • Connectivity: inspect whether relevant requests and replies are visible, and examine their timestamps and endpoints.
  • Traffic volume: collect packet or byte counts, optionally across intervals.
  • Protocol or host inspection: extract selected decoded fields such as source and destination addresses, ports, timestamps, or protocol names.

Capture only traffic you are authorized to inspect. A capture shows packets visible at the selected capture point; it is not a universal view of a switched network. The interface, host, network placement, permissions, and traffic path all affect what the capture contains.

Choose the right command-line tool

Tool or mode Best fit Trade-off
TShark live capture Short checks, decoded output, and statistics in a terminal. Requires capture permissions; live decoding and filtering can add load.
TShark capture to file, then read the file Repeatable analysis, field extraction, and review of a bounded sample. Uses storage and creates a sensitive artifact that needs access and retention controls.
dumpcap Capture-focused collection; its output can be analyzed later with TShark or Wireshark. It is focused on capturing rather than the richer decoded analysis TShark provides.
tcpdump Lightweight capture workflows; Wireshark documents it for remote or headless capture. Use TShark or Wireshark afterward when you need their protocol dissection and analysis workflow.
Wireshark GUI Interactive follow-up on a saved capture. Less suitable than a command-line tool for unattended scripts.

TShark is Wireshark’s terminal-oriented tool and can capture live traffic or read saved capture files. See the TShark manual and Wireshark User’s Guide for release-specific details.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prepare the host and verify capture access

  1. Check the installed version and options. Run tshark --version and consult tshark -h or the installed manual. Online documentation may describe options not present in an older local release.
  2. List capture interfaces. Run tshark -D; dumpcap -D is another option. Use the interface identifier shown on that host rather than assuming its name is eth0.
  3. Test permissions. Live capture requires sufficient privileges. Configure the narrow capture access supported by your operating system instead of running a whole long-lived monitoring script as administrator or root. Setup differs by platform; consult the Wireshark capture-privileges guidance and your OS documentation.
  4. Bound the collection and protect its destination. Choose a short time window or other supported stop condition, confirm the output directory is writable, and ensure there is enough space. Restrict capture-file access and set a retention policy appropriate to your environment.

Capture a bounded sample and extract fields

This shell example captures traffic matching TCP port 443 for 30 seconds, writes a pcapng file, then reads it and prints selected fields from TCP packets:

# Adapt the interface, filter, output path and stop condition to your host.
tshark -i eth0 -f 'tcp port 443' -a duration:30 -w sample.pcapng

# Read the saved capture and emit selected fields for downstream parsing.
tshark -r sample.pcapng -Y 'tcp' -T fields
  -e frame.time -e ip.src -e ip.dst -e tcp.dstport

Confirm that the installed version accepts the stop-condition option and fields shown, and that the capture filter is valid for the platform’s libpcap implementation. The example is a pattern, not a tested command for every operating system or TShark release. Consult the manual for supported options and field behavior.

Keep the two filters straight:

  • -f sets a capture filter, selecting packets as they are collected. Narrow capture filters are generally more efficient.
  • -Y sets a display filter, selecting decoded packets during analysis, including when reading a file. The expressions for capture and display filters are different languages and cannot be substituted for one another.

As the TShark manual notes, “Display filters can be specified when capturing or when reading from a capture file.” A display filter applied during busy live capture can increase packet-loss risk; where practical, reduce traffic with a capture filter or save the trace and filter it afterward. The manual describes this as a risk, not a guaranteed or quantified loss rate.

Turn captures into useful script results

Parse selected fields

-T fields with one or more -e field names emits focused output that is easier to consume than verbose packet descriptions. Select only fields needed for the question, and check how your installed version handles field formatting and packets where a field is absent. If you need robust machine-readable output, use an output format supported by the installed release and validate its structure before depending on it.

Collect counts and intervals

TShark provides statistics options for packet and byte counts, including interval-based counts. Use the local manual to choose the appropriate statistics mode and interval, then parse its output deliberately: format and option availability can vary by version. Do not treat an example interval from documentation as a claim about expected network performance.

Check the result, not just the exit code

Have the automation capture the command’s exit status and verify that the trace exists and contains packets before treating the run as successful. A clean exit with zero packets can indicate the wrong interface, a filter that excluded the traffic, a time window that missed it, or inadequate capture access—not necessarily that no network issue exists.

Make scheduled captures safer and more reliable

  • Keep scope narrow: limit the interface, filter, and duration to the diagnostic need. Avoid collecting unrelated traffic.
  • Prefer capture-to-file for review: a bounded artifact separates collection from analysis and can be opened later in TShark or Wireshark. This is useful for repeatability, but the file itself needs protection.
  • Limit privileges: arrange the least access necessary for packet capture, with elevation confined to the capture process if the operating system supports that approach.
  • Manage sensitive data: packet traces can expose identifiers and, depending on protocols and encryption, payload data. Protect them in storage and transit, limit sharing, and delete them according to an explicit retention policy.
  • Plan for version drift: test scripts against the actual installed TShark version and handle unsupported options, absent interfaces, permission failures, and empty results.
  • Do not assume visibility: capture placement and network configuration determine which packets reach the selected interface. Promiscuous mode does not make a workstation see every packet on a switched LAN.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Permission error or no interfaces listed The process lacks capture access, or the interface listing is unavailable to that user. Check tshark -D and OS-specific capture privileges; grant the minimum required access rather than elevating the entire automation job.
Capture is empty Wrong interface, filter mismatch, wrong time window, or no visible matching traffic. Verify the interface, review the filter syntax, widen the test window briefly if appropriate, and generate or identify authorized traffic that should match.
Packets appear to be missing during live inspection A busy interface, live display-filter workload, or capture-point visibility limits may be involved. Prefer a narrow capture filter, save a bounded capture and analyze it afterward, and confirm that the selected interface can see the traffic in question.
Unknown option or field The script targets a different TShark release than the installed one. Check tshark --version and local help/manual, then use options and fields supported by that version.
Output cannot be parsed reliably Human-oriented output, unexpected delimiters, missing fields, or version-dependent formatting. Request only needed fields or a supported structured output format, and validate empty and multi-packet results before scheduling the script.
Capture command runs out of storage or leaves sensitive files behind Collection is not bounded or retention and permissions are not configured. Set an appropriate stop condition, choose a controlled output location, restrict access, and apply the environment’s retention and cleanup policy.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is for capturing webpages, not inspecting network packets; it does not replace TShark. If your workflow also needs a clean webpage screenshot, one GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents and offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
