Use both NetScaler Console’s Indicators of Compromise (IoC) scan and retained appliance logs to triage a suspected compromise. Neither a clean scan nor quiet logs prove an appliance is safe: scan logic is incomplete, and logs show only activity that was recorded and retained. Check the appliance’s exposure to relevant vulnerabilities, preserve evidence, and escalate suspicious findings for forensic review.

Start by preserving evidence and scoping the appliances

Before changing configurations or upgrading, identify the NetScaler instances under review, their builds and roles, the period of concern, and any relevant administrative or network changes. Preserve available audit logs and copies held by external syslog, nslog, or SIEM systems. Local records may rotate or expire; NetScaler recommends external syslog for production persistence in its attack-event logging guidance.

Record the time zone and time range used for searches, along with each instance’s identity and current scan status. Keep original log exports intact and document when and how they were collected so investigators can interpret them later.

Run the NetScaler Console IoC scan

In NetScaler Console, open the Security Advisory page and run the compromise detection scan for managed instances. Record the result for each appliance. The scan reports statuses including Potentially Compromised, No Compromise Detected, Skipped, Failed to Execute, and Execution in Progress, as described in the NetScaler IoC documentation.

  • Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
  • Potentially Compromised: Treat as a lead requiring investigation; it is not, by itself, a complete incident finding.
  • No Compromise Detected: Means the scan did not find what its logic checks for. NetScaler warns that the logic does not cover every threat-actor technique and may fail to identify actual compromise.
  • Skipped, Failed to Execute, or Execution in Progress: These are not clean results. Determine why the scan did not complete or wait for it to finish, then record the outcome.

NetScaler says its IoC information may have limited forensic value and may fail to identify actual compromises. A negative scan is therefore not forensic clearance.

Check whether the appliance was exposed to a relevant vulnerability

On the Security Advisory page, inspect impacted instances for the CVEs relevant to the suspected period or activity. Use the specific CVE advisory to establish affected and fixed builds; do not infer exposure or remediation from a generic version list. For example, NetScaler’s instructions for CVE-2025-7776 describe viewing affected instances and downloading a Scan logs CSV to understand the finding. Review the applicable CVE page for the required fixed release or build before planning an upgrade.

A vulnerability finding establishes potential exposure, not proof that the vulnerability was exploited. Conversely, being on a fixed build now does not establish whether the appliance was compromised before remediation. Some CVE scan results may take time to appear in the dashboard; the CVE-2025-7776 instructions say impact can take a couple of hours to be reflected.

For newer advisories, use the current vendor page rather than relying on a copied build list. NetScaler’s CVE-2026-11373 guidance, for example, directs administrators to identify impacted instances in CVE Detection and upgrade to a release containing the fix. The applicable CVE and affected builds depend on the advisory and appliance release.

Review retained audit, syslog, and nslog records

Search available records around the suspicious time window for unexpected administrative activity, unusual management-plane access, unplanned configuration changes, and security event patterns. These are investigation leads, not proof of exploitation. Correlate each event with its source and destination, timestamp, appliance role, expected traffic, change history, and whether the device was exposed to a relevant vulnerability.

NetScaler’s logging documentation describes HTTP/TCP attack-event and protocol-violation logs. The documented HTTP alerts include desync, Slow Loris, Slow Post, and HTTP/2 ping, reset, settings, and empty-frame floods. Warning-level protocol irregularities include invalid bodies, invalid or duplicate headers, header overflow, and invalid host headers. TCP alerts include SYN flood, segments smack, and small-window attacks. These are event classes that may be detected by the logging feature—not a catalogue of unique compromise artifacts.

Event records can include the category, source and destination IP addresses and ports, protocol, a sample of the first 128 bytes of payload, and contextual explanation. A payload sample is not a complete request or forensic capture. Interpret it with the surrounding records and traffic context.

Enable attack-event logging where supported

NetScaler documents the -protocolViolations option for audit syslog and nslog configuration beginning with NetScaler 14.1 build 51.x. ALL enables supported protocol-violation and attack logging; NONE is the default. Example command forms from the vendor documentation are:

  • 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
  • add audit syslogAction <name> <syslog server IP> <loglevel> -protocolViolations ALL
  • add audit nslogAction <name> <nslog server IP> <loglevel> -protocolViolations ALL

Validate the syntax and operational impact against the documentation for the appliance’s release before applying a configuration change. The guidance recommends external syslog for production persistence, log rotation, alerting on ALERT events, and monitoring appliance performance when comprehensive logging is enabled. Its suggestion to start with WARNING is tuning advice for event logging, not an incident-response severity scale.

Enabling logging now can help capture future activity, but it cannot recreate events that were not logged or have already been lost to retention.

Use the checks together, not as substitutes

Check What it can show Key limitation
Console IoC scan Whether the vendor’s scan logic flags an instance as potentially compromised or reports another scan status. Detection logic does not cover every technique and may miss actual compromise.
Console CVE assessment Whether the appliance is identified as impacted by a specific vulnerability, with scan details where offered. Exposure is not proof of exploitation; results may take time to appear, and the relevant CVE advisory determines affected and fixed builds.
Retained logs and event records Recorded administrative, access, configuration, and supported attack-event activity over the period covered by retained records. Coverage depends on what was configured and retained; absence of an event does not establish absence of compromise.

A positive scan result, suspicious log entry, or vulnerability exposure should prompt assessment. A negative result in any single channel cannot establish that an appliance was never compromised.

Escalate suspected compromise

Preserve relevant logs and evidence, avoid overwriting useful records, and involve experienced forensic responders if compromise is suspected or a reliable determination is required. Citrix Systems’ Conditions For Use Of IoC Information states: “You are strongly advised to retain the services of experienced forensic investigators to assess your environment.”

There is no established comprehensive public checklist of NetScaler compromise file paths, hashes, or persistence artifacts in the cited vendor material. Do not treat indicators from an unrelated incident or CVE as a universal checklist; obtain incident-specific indicators through the applicable vendor advisory or support channel and forensic investigation.
