How to check mobile coverage at your home and workplace in Canada

To find out whether a mobile carrier will work at both your home and workplace, check each address separately—not just the carrier’s national coverage claim. Start with ISED’s National Broadband Map, then enter both addresses in the coverage maps of the carriers you are considering. Compare the technology shown at each location, confirm that your phone and plan support it, and test service inside the actual buildings before you switch whenever possible.

Maps are estimates. A real call, text and data test in the rooms where you spend time is stronger evidence than any coloured map area.

Why a national coverage claim is not enough

“Which carrier has coverage at my house?” is an address-level question. A provider may advertise broad national availability while reception differs between two nearby buildings. Construction materials, floor level, window orientation, terrain, network capacity and the phone itself can all change the result. Your workplace may also be served by a different tower or network layer than your home.

Check the home and workplace as independent locations. If you commute through a rural area, underground garage or other place where you regularly need service, include that route in your decision, but do not treat a route result as proof of indoor service at either address.

The most reliable process combines three kinds of evidence:

  • Government data: a consistent starting point for comparing providers, technologies and reported speeds.
  • Provider maps: carrier-specific layers and qualifications that may show more detail.
  • A physical test: calls, messages and data performed inside the rooms where you will use the phone.

1. Start with ISED’s National Broadband Map

ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada) publishes and maintains the National Broadband Map using information collected by the CRTC. The CRTC describes the map as a way to explore service availability at homes and in communities. Recent changes are intended to make provider, technology and speed information more useful for Canadians comparing services.

Search both addresses

  1. Open the current National Broadband Map.
  2. Search your complete home address, including the unit number if applicable. Zoom in until the map identifies the correct building or road segment.
  3. Record the mobile providers and network technologies shown at the location.
  4. Repeat the search for your workplace. Do not assume that a result at home applies at work.
  5. If the map offers provider, technology or speed filters, inspect each one rather than relying on the default combined view.

The map’s underlying presentation has changed over time. Earlier descriptions showed mobile data in 25-square-kilometre hexagons, while the CRTC has approved disclosure of provider, technology and speed information at the 250-metre road-segment level. Do not assume every part of the live interface already uses the finer standard; rely on the scale and legend currently displayed.

What to write down

Create a simple record for each address. Note the provider name, the technology layer (such as LTE or 5G), any speed information, and whether the result is an estimate or a reported measurement. Saving a screenshot with the date helps if the map changes later.

2. Check every candidate carrier’s own map

Use the same two addresses on each provider’s official map. Provider maps can expose layers that are not obvious in a national overview, but they still do not guarantee service inside a particular room.

Rogers map layers

Rogers’ map includes 5G/5G+, LTE, extended coverage and satellite layers. Select each relevant layer and inspect the home and workplace independently. An extended or satellite indication is not equivalent to ordinary terrestrial coverage for every phone function, so read the map’s own qualification text.

Bell map layers

Bell publishes layers for LTE, 5G, 5G+ and 5G+ Advanced. A higher-tier colour does not automatically mean your current phone or plan can use it. Bell states that 5G+ requires both a compatible device and an eligible plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record comparable results

Address Provider Layer shown What to verify next
Home Candidate 1 LTE, 5G or another displayed layer Indoor call, text and data test; device and plan compatibility
Workplace Candidate 1 LTE, 5G or another displayed layer Indoor test in your work area and common rooms
Home Candidate 2 LTE, 5G or another displayed layer Indoor call, text and data test; device and plan compatibility
Workplace Candidate 2 LTE, 5G or another displayed layer Indoor test in your work area and common rooms

Use “not stated” in your notes when a map does not identify a technology or speed. Do not convert a blank or unclear map cell into an assumption that service is unavailable.

3. Match the map result to your phone and plan

A displayed network tier describes what may be available in the area, not what every subscriber will receive. Before treating a 5G or 5G+ result as useful, check three dependencies.

Device compatibility

Your phone must contain the necessary radio hardware and support the carrier’s frequencies and network configuration. The operating system can also affect connection behaviour. Rogers lists equipment and operating-system support among the factors that influence whether a device connects.

Plan eligibility

Some network layers are restricted to specific plans. Bell explicitly says that 5G+ needs an eligible plan as well as a compatible phone. Ask the carrier to confirm eligibility for the exact plan and device combination you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local network conditions

Rogers notes that network availability and capacity, signal strength, topography and environmental conditions affect the actual connection. A map can show a service area even when a busy site delivers slower data at a particular time or when terrain blocks a signal.

4. Test mobile coverage inside both buildings

Indoor testing is the practical confirmation of a map result. Coverage can differ between rooms, floors and sides of the same building. The CRTC’s record on mobile service also recognizes the importance of indoor and in-vehicle connectivity.

Use a repeatable test

  1. Choose representative locations. At home, test the room where you normally work, the bedroom, the main living area and any spot where you need emergency calling. At work, test your desk, meeting rooms and the entrance or area where you commonly take calls.
  2. Test voice. Make an ordinary call and listen for dropped calls, one-way audio, distortion and long delays. If possible, have the other person move around while you remain in the normal work area.
  3. Test text messaging. Send and receive several messages. Note delays and whether messages fail when you move deeper into the building.
  4. Test data. Open ordinary websites, send an attachment and perform the mobile tasks you actually need. Test at different times if your workplace has predictable busy periods.
  5. Test video calls when essential. A phone that handles voice and messaging may still struggle with a work video meeting. Check both audio and video stability rather than relying on a speed indicator alone.
  6. Repeat in more than one place. Try different floors, windows and interior rooms. Keep the phone in the same position and avoid comparing one carrier beside a window with another in a basement.

Use a temporary service when possible

A current subscriber on the network can provide a useful test, provided the phone is comparable to yours. A temporary SIM or eSIM can also let you test before porting your number or cancelling existing service. Ask the carrier about activation charges, duration and cancellation rules; current trial terms vary and are not established here.

5. Interpret map colours and technology levels correctly

LTE, 5G and higher-tier labels describe radio technologies, not a guaranteed user experience. A lower layer with reliable indoor voice may be more useful than a higher layer that disappears behind building materials. Conversely, a weak LTE result may not meet the needs of someone who depends on sustained data or video meetings.

Evidence What it tells you What it does not prove
National Broadband Map result A consistent, government-maintained view of reported availability and available provider or technology information That your particular room will receive a usable signal
Provider map layer How a carrier classifies LTE, 5G, 5G+, extended or satellite service at the address That your phone and plan qualify or that capacity will be adequate
Indoor call and data test How the network performs with a real device in the building How it will perform everywhere you travel or at every future network condition

Rogers explicitly describes mapped coverage as approximate. Its qualifications list equipment, operating system, network availability and capacity, signal strength, topography and environmental conditions as variables. Treat the map as a screening tool and the indoor test as confirmation.

6. Compare home and workplace results with a decision matrix

When more than one carrier appears viable, compare the two addresses side by side. Give the greatest weight to the function that would cause the most disruption if it failed.

Decision factor Questions to answer Strong evidence
Home availability Can you call, text and use data in the rooms you occupy? Successful tests away from windows and on more than one floor
Workplace availability Does service work at your desk and in meeting areas? Successful calls and data during normal working hours
Technology Is LTE, 5G or another layer shown at each address? The layer appears on both the national and provider maps
Compatibility Does your exact phone and plan support the displayed layer? Written or account-level confirmation from the carrier
Capacity Does performance remain usable at busy times? Repeated tests at different times, not one quick check
Confidence Is the result only mapped, or physically tested? A test with the intended carrier and your normal device

If one carrier works well at home but fails at work, do not average the two results into a vague “mostly covered” conclusion. Decide whether workplace reliability, home reliability or both are non-negotiable. If both are essential, reject a network that cannot pass either location’s required tests.

7. Understand Canada’s new coverage reporting standard

In Telecom Decision 2026-258, dated October 2, 2026, the CRTC adopted a three-level mobile coverage reporting standard. It is a reporting framework, not a promise that a subscriber will receive a particular service inside a home or workplace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Level 1

Level 1 is defined as service strong enough to support uninterrupted emergency voice calls with adequate audio quality and public alerts.

Level 2

Level 2 adds voice or video calls with high voice quality, download speeds of at least 3 Mbps and upload speeds of at least 1 Mbps.

Level 3 and timing

The decision establishes a third level, with the detailed reporting progression to follow in later surveys. Providers are to report Level 1 in the next Annual Facilities Survey in early 2027; Levels 2 and 3 are to follow in later surveys. These categories should help make coverage disclosures more comparable over time, but they do not replace an indoor test at your addresses.

8. What to do when the map and your experience disagree

Check the basics first

  • Confirm that the map pin is on the correct building and unit area.
  • Make sure you selected the intended provider and technology layer.
  • Check whether your phone and plan support that layer.
  • Repeat the test outdoors and indoors to distinguish a building problem from a wider coverage problem.
  • Repeat at another time to identify congestion rather than lack of signal.

Report a mismatch when the official feature is available

The CRTC’s October 2, 2026 announcement says Canadians will be able to flag locations where coverage maps do not match their experience. The stated purpose is to improve coverage information over time. Because the announcement does not by itself establish that the reporting interface is already live, look for the current instructions in the National Broadband Map before submitting a report.

9. Check practical plan terms only after coverage passes

Once a network works at both locations, compare the plan details that affect your use:

  • Monthly price and whether it is promotional or recurring.
  • High-speed data allowance and what happens after it is used.
  • Roaming, extended-network or satellite rules that apply to your regular travel.
  • Device financing, activation charges and contract or cancellation conditions.
  • Whether the plan includes the network layer you tested.

Coverage research cannot establish current commercial terms. Confirm these items directly with the carrier immediately before signing up, because prices, eligibility and conditions can change.

10. Common mistakes to avoid

Using a national percentage as a personal prediction

Population or geographic coverage statistics do not tell you whether a particular room has usable reception. Address-level map results and an indoor test are more relevant to this decision.

Testing only outdoors

An outdoor signal can disappear behind concrete, low-emissivity glass, metal cladding or underground construction. Test where you actually use the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming 5G is always better

A higher label may require a newer phone, a qualifying plan and sufficient local capacity. Reliable LTE can be the better choice for calls if the 5G signal is weak indoors.

Testing with the wrong device

A friend’s phone may support different bands or network features. Use your own phone, or a temporary device with specifications close to it.

Porting your number before testing

Complete the test before cancelling the current service or moving your number. Keeping the existing line active avoids a preventable loss of service while you investigate.

A concise workflow you can repeat

  1. Search the home and workplace in the National Broadband Map.
  2. Record the provider, technology and speed information shown for each address.
  3. Repeat both searches in every candidate provider’s map, including the relevant LTE, 5G, 5G+ or extended layers.
  4. Confirm that your phone, operating system and plan can use the displayed technology.
  5. Test calls, texts, data and essential video calls inside representative rooms at both locations.
  6. Repeat at different times if capacity or congestion could matter.
  7. Choose a plan only after the network passes the requirements for both addresses, then verify current pricing and contract terms.
  8. If your experience conflicts with the map, check the pin and settings, repeat the test and use the CRTC’s official feedback route if it is live.

This process answers the useful question—whether a particular network works where you live and work—without confusing a map estimate with a service guarantee.
