Check the location forecast and any warnings for the relevant area as well. Radar shows observed precipitation; the forecast addresses expected conditions. MetService says it operates ten weather radars across New Zealand, and its 28 November 2024 Canterbury radar announcement described national radar imagery updating every seven and a half minutes. Operational details can change.
Know what radar can miss
A radar return is not a complete, ground-level map of rain. MetService explains that terrain can block the radar beam. The beam also rises above the ground as it travels farther, so precipitation falling from low cloud at a distance may not be detected. These limitations are especially relevant when interpreting radar in mountainous parts of the South Island.

Check official warnings and road conditions
Read the weather advice
MetService is New Zealand’s only authorised provider of severe weather warnings. Its system includes outlooks, watches, and warnings. A watch means severe conditions may occur, but they are not imminent or certain; keep monitoring official updates. Heavy rain can bring surface flooding and slips, as well as difficult driving conditions.

Recheck just before departure
Forecasts, warnings, and road status can change. Check the official weather and road sources close to the time you leave, especially if heavy rain is expected or a watch or warning applies to your route. Do not treat a historical travel advisory as a current forecast: for example, NZTA’s 19 June 2026 advisory about highway travel in messy weather is a dated notice, not live road information.

Why radar checks are useful in the South Island
Radar offers a quick way to inspect recent precipitation around itinerary stops, but mountainous terrain can limit what it detects. MetService said its new Canterbury radar would provide more detailed weather information for that region and help meteorologists enhance forecasts and severe-weather warnings for central South Island communities. That regional improvement does not remove the need to interpret radar cautiously or check road status separately. Read the 28 November 2024 Canterbury radar announcement.
For an explanation of radar coverage limits, see MetService’s guide, “Flying under the RADAR”.
