There is no single AQI number that makes every activity safe for every person. The right decision depends on the AQI band, the pollutant (usually ozone or particle pollution), how hard and how long you will exercise, and whether you belong to a sensitive group.

What the AQI measures—and what it does not
The U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI) translates outdoor concentrations of major pollutants into a 0–500 scale with six color-coded categories. A higher number means greater health concern for the population covered by that reading. AQI reporting is designed to answer a practical question: how concerning is the outdoor air in this reporting area at this time?
An AQI value is not a personal medical clearance. It summarizes the pollutant concentration measured or estimated for an area, while your exposure also depends on your route, exertion, duration, weather, and health. A person with asthma may need a more cautious plan than a healthy adult at the same AQI, and a long run creates more inhaled dose than a short walk.

The AQI can represent different pollutants. Ozone often rises on sunny, warm afternoons, while particle pollution can increase during wildfire smoke, wood burning, dust, or stagnant weather. Read the pollutant name and the time period with the number instead of treating every AQI reading as interchangeable.
How to check the air near you
1. Look up your location on AirNow.gov
- Open AirNow.gov.
- Enter your city or ZIP code in the location search.
- Read the current AQI category, numerical value, dominant pollutant, and reporting time.
- Open the forecast for the same area. The forecast may identify hours when pollution is expected to peak and periods when cleaner air is likely.
The current value is the best starting point for a decision you must make now. The forecast is for planning a workout, commute, practice, or event later. Forecasts are not guarantees, so check the current value again shortly before leaving.
2. Use the AirNow app for repeated checks
The AirNow app shows current AQI and forecasts and can store multiple locations. Saving home, work, school, or a travel destination lets you check each place without searching again. Confirm that the selected location is the one where you will actually spend time; a regional value may not reflect a smoke plume or traffic corridor a few miles away.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Check the Fire and Smoke Map during wildfire conditions
When smoke is present, open AirNow’s Fire and Smoke Map in addition to the ordinary AQI page. It combines regulatory monitoring with other information, including readings from low-cost sensors, to show smoke impacts at a more local scale. Use it to see whether smoke is moving toward your route, whether nearby monitors disagree, and whether conditions are improving or deteriorating. The map supplements—not replaces—the official AQI and local public-health advisories.
4. Check your local air agency when conditions are unusual
State, tribal, and local environmental agencies may issue advisories about ozone episodes, dust, industrial releases, or wildfire smoke. If a local advisory conflicts with a commercial weather app, treat the official agency AQI and advisory as the reference for the U.S. AQI system. Keep the advisory’s geographic area and publication time in mind.
Understand the six AQI bands
The current U.S. AQI scale uses these ranges. The activity language below is EPA guidance for particle pollution; ozone has its own pollutant-specific guide, so do not apply the particle chart mechanically to an ozone alert.
| AQI | Category | Particle-pollution activity guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 0–50 | Good | It is a good day to be active outside. |
| 51–100 | Moderate | Unusually sensitive people may make activity shorter and less intense. Everyone else can generally be active outdoors. |
| 101–150 | Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups | Sensitive groups should shorten and reduce intensity, take more breaks, and watch for symptoms. |
| 151–200 | Unhealthy | Sensitive groups should avoid long or intense activity and consider moving or rescheduling it. Everyone else should reduce long or intense activity and take breaks. |
| 201–300 | Very Unhealthy | Sensitive groups should avoid all outdoor physical activity. Everyone else should avoid long or intense activity and consider moving it indoors or rescheduling. |
| 301–500 | Hazardous | Everyone should avoid all outdoor physical activity. Sensitive groups should stay indoors and keep activity low. |
These categories describe increasing population-level risk, not a guarantee that a particular person will feel well or become ill at a specific number. At the upper end of a category, choose the more protective option, especially for strenuous or prolonged activity.

Who should use the sensitive-group guidance?
EPA particle-pollution guidance specifically calls out people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teenagers, minority populations, and outdoor workers as sensitive groups. A person may fit more than one group, and individual medical advice can be more restrictive than the general AQI chart.
If you are responsible for a child, a team, a work crew, or someone with a chronic condition, set the plan using the most vulnerable participant rather than the strongest person present. Ask a clinician for individualized advice about exercise during pollution episodes; the AQI page cannot account for your diagnosis, medication, or previous reactions.
Turn an AQI reading into an activity decision
Start with the pollutant
Identify whether the reported AQI is driven by ozone or particle pollution. Ozone guidance and particle guidance use different exposure patterns and recommendations. During smoke, particle pollution is usually the central concern, but verify the pollutant displayed for your location. If two services show different numbers because they are reporting different pollutants, the readings are not contradictory.
Match the plan to exertion and duration
Breathing more deeply and for longer increases the amount of polluted air you inhale. At a moderate AQI, an easy, short walk may be reasonable for a sensitive person who would postpone a hard interval workout. At an unhealthy AQI, reduce both intensity and duration, add breaks, or move the session indoors. At very unhealthy or hazardous levels, follow the chart’s advice to avoid outdoor physical activity rather than trying to compensate with a mask, a shorter route, or a different time without checking conditions.
Use timing to find a cleaner window
Ozone commonly reaches higher levels later in the day in sunny weather, while smoke can shift quickly with wind and fire behavior. Read the forecast discussion for expected peaks and cleaner periods. A morning workout is not automatically safer, and a forecasted improvement can fail; confirm the current AQI at departure time.
Watch for symptoms and stop when they occur
If you develop symptoms during outdoor activity, stop, move to cleaner air, and follow your personal medical plan. Do not continue simply because the app’s number has not changed. Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, and contact a clinician for recurring reactions.
How to handle conflicting apps, monitors, and sensors
Different readings can all be internally correct when they use different inputs or averaging periods. Before comparing numbers, check four dimensions:

- Pollutant: ozone and particle pollution are different contaminants.
- Time horizon: a current NowCast is not the same as a multi-hour or next-day forecast.
- Location: a regional reporting area, a regulatory monitor, and a neighborhood sensor may be separated by miles and different conditions.
- Source and method: the official U.S. AQI follows agency methods; private services may calculate or label AQI differently.
For a U.S. health decision, use the official AirNow AQI as the reference and read local agency advisories. A low-cost sensor can add neighborhood detail, particularly during smoke, but a very short-term reading has more uncertainty for health interpretation. Do not substitute a consumer sensor for official AQI reporting or assume that a single sensor represents an entire town.

- Check the ordinary AirNow AQI for the destination and the route.
- Open the Fire and Smoke Map to see the smoke plume, nearby monitor values, and sensor information.
- Check the forecast and local emergency or public-health advisory for expected movement and duration.
- If the AQI is rising, delay or move the activity indoors before smoke becomes visibly thick.
- Recheck immediately before leaving and again if the activity will last several hours.
Smoke can vary sharply across short distances and can change faster than a regional forecast. Visibility alone is not a reliable safety test: clear-looking air can still contain elevated fine particles, while a nearby smoky area may not yet have changed your regional AQI. Use the numerical AQI, map, and official advisories together.
Examples of applying the categories
Suppose the current particle AQI is 45 and the forecast remains stable. A healthy adult can generally follow the planned outdoor workout, while still checking again if the session is long or conditions are changing. At an AQI of 85, most people can remain active, but an unusually sensitive person might switch a hard, long workout to an easier and shorter one.
At 125, a youth practice or outdoor work shift should be shortened and made less intense for sensitive participants, with additional breaks and attention to symptoms. At 175, a healthy adult should reduce prolonged or intense exertion, and a person in a sensitive group should consider moving the activity indoors or rescheduling it. At 230, sensitive people should avoid outdoor physical activity and everyone else should avoid long or intense sessions. At 320, the recommendation is for everyone to avoid outdoor physical activity; sensitive people should remain indoors and keep activity low. These examples illustrate how the same number affects plans differently according to intensity, duration, and vulnerability.
Planning for schools, teams, and outdoor jobs
Group leaders should designate one person to check AirNow and the local agency advisory, record the time and pollutant, and communicate the decision. Check both the activity site and any route participants will use. Have an indoor location, a shortened program, or a postponement time ready before the AQI rises. For events lasting several hours, schedule rechecks rather than relying on the opening reading. Coaches and supervisors should make it easy for participants to report symptoms without penalty and should use the most protective guidance for the most vulnerable participant.

Why the current reading and forecast can disagree
The NowCast describes current conditions using recent observations, while a forecast estimates what may happen later. A forecasted afternoon ozone peak can coexist with a lower morning NowCast; conversely, a smoke plume can arrive sooner than expected and push the current value above yesterday’s forecast. Neither display is necessarily wrong. Use the NowCast for the immediate decision, the forecast for scheduling, and a fresh check when the activity starts. Note the update time because a number without a timestamp cannot tell you whether it is current.

- Where? Select the exact location where the activity will occur, not merely your home ZIP code.
- What is the current AQI? Record the category, number, pollutant, and update time.
- What is expected later? Read the forecast for the planned start and finish times.
- Who is participating? Identify sensitive-group participants and anyone with a personal medical restriction.
- How hard and how long? Classify the plan as easy/short or prolonged/intense, then apply the matching category guidance.
- Can the plan change? Prepare an indoor location, shorter route, lower-intensity option, or alternate time before conditions worsen.
- When will you recheck? Set a reminder for departure and for any event lasting long enough for conditions to change.
Common mistakes that lead to bad decisions
Using yesterday’s number
AQIs are time-sensitive. A value saved from the previous evening does not establish today’s conditions. Always check the current reading on the day of the activity.
Treating “Moderate” as identical for everyone
Moderate means most people can generally be active outdoors, but unusually sensitive people may need shorter, easier activity. The category is not a promise that every person will be symptom-free.

Applying a particle chart to every pollutant
The detailed table above is for particle pollution. When ozone is the dominant pollutant, consult the official ozone-specific guidance and the forecast rather than copying particle recommendations.
Comparing numbers without checking timestamps
A current NowCast, a forecast high, and a sensor’s minute-by-minute concentration answer different questions. Compare like with like before deciding that one service is wrong.
Assuming a nearby sensor is automatically more authoritative
Proximity can reveal local variation, but sensor calibration, placement, and short averaging windows affect interpretation. Use neighborhood sensors as additional context and the official AQI as the reference.
Geographic and medical limits
This guidance uses the U.S. AQI and AirNow system. Readers outside the United States should use their national or local environmental agency’s index and health guidance; category names, thresholds, and pollutant calculations may differ.
Air quality information supports planning but does not diagnose illness or replace medical advice. If your clinician has given you an action plan for pollution, asthma, heart disease, or another condition, follow that plan even when the general AQI category appears acceptable. Because AQI and smoke forecasts can change during the day, checking once is not enough for a long outdoor event.
Best Value
The simplest rule to remember
Check AirNow before you go, identify the pollutant and current NowCast, use the forecast to choose timing, scale back or move indoors as the category rises, and recheck whenever conditions or your symptoms change. For wildfire smoke, add the Fire and Smoke Map and local advisories; for ozone, use ozone-specific guidance. This approach is safer and more accurate than relying on a single universal “safe” AQI cutoff.
Frequently Asked Questions
What AQI is too high for outdoor exercise?
There is no universal cutoff for every person or pollutant. For particle pollution, EPA guidance says sensitive groups should avoid all outdoor physical activity at Very Unhealthy levels (AQI 201–300), while everyone should avoid long or intense activity and consider moving indoors. At Hazardous levels (301–500), everyone should avoid outdoor physical activity. At lower levels, match duration and intensity to the category and your health status.
Is an AQI of 100 safe?
An AQI of 100 is the upper end of Moderate. Most people can generally be active outdoors, but unusually sensitive people may need shorter, less intense activity and more breaks. Check which pollutant is driving the value and stop if symptoms develop.
Should I exercise outside when there is wildfire smoke?
Check the current AirNow AQI, the Fire and Smoke Map, the forecast, and local advisories. If particle pollution is rising, shorten or postpone activity, move it indoors, and recheck immediately before starting. Do not use visibility alone to judge safety.
Why does my weather app show a different AQI than AirNow?
Services may use different pollutants, locations, averaging periods, data sources, or calculation methods. Compare the timestamp and pollutant first. For a U.S. health decision, use the official AirNow AQI and local environmental-agency advisories as the reference.
Are low-cost air sensors accurate enough to decide whether I can exercise?
They can add useful neighborhood detail, especially during smoke, but very short-term readings have greater uncertainty for health interpretation. Use them as additional context, not as a replacement for the official AQI or local advisories.
When is the best time of day to exercise?
Use the forecast discussion rather than assuming a fixed time is always safest. Ozone often rises on sunny, warm afternoons, while smoke can shift quickly with wind and fire behavior. Check the current AQI at departure because a forecasted clean window can change.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Who counts as a sensitive group?
EPA particle guidance identifies people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teenagers, minority populations, and outdoor workers. Individual conditions and clinician instructions may require more caution than the general chart.
How often should I recheck the AQI?
Check before leaving, compare the forecast with your planned start and finish, and check again during a long event or whenever smoke, weather, or symptoms change. A reading from the previous day is not a reliable description of current conditions.
The Bottom Line
Use AirNow’s current AQI and pollutant, consult the forecast, adjust intensity and duration for the category and sensitive participants, and recheck before and during changing conditions. Add the Fire and Smoke Map for wildfire smoke and use ozone-specific guidance when ozone is the concern.
