Before driving on the A47, check National Highways’ live traffic information for incidents and delays, then check its daily closure report and the GOV.UK roadworks database for planned works. These services answer different questions, so check the stretch and direction you intend to travel and recheck shortly before setting off.
Which A47 traffic check should you use?
Use live traffic information to find incidents and delays happening now. Use closure and roadworks listings to look for scheduled disruption. A planned closure schedule is not a live incident feed, and a live traffic check does not replace checking advance notices.

How to check the A47 before you leave
- Check live conditions. Open National Highways traffic news / Traffic England. Look for the A47 and the location and direction relevant to your journey.
- Look for scheduled full closures. Open the daily closure report, select your travel day and check the road filters for the A47. A listing indicates a scheduled full closure within the next seven days; it does not describe every possible disruption.
- Search other roadworks. Use the GOV.UK roadworks database to search the A47 for your journey date. This provides another check for current or planned works on the major road network.
- Check any relevant project notice. If you will pass an active A47 scheme, read its National Highways project page for local access, diversion or junction details. Treat it as location-specific information, and verify the latest status using live traffic and the closure report.
- Recheck close to departure. Closure schedules can change at short notice. Check the official live and planned information again before you set off.
How to read results for your route
Match the location and direction
“The A47” covers a route, not one single set of conditions. Check the incident or restriction against the part of the road you will use and your direction of travel. A project notice may concern only a particular junction, stretch or access arrangement, rather than the whole road.
Do not treat an empty closure result as an all-clear
The daily closure report is about scheduled full closures. If the A47 is absent from its filters, that does not prove there is no incident, delay or other roadwork. Check live traffic separately and use the roadworks database for other works.

Use project pages for local detail, not as a substitute for live status
A scheme page can explain local arrangements that a network-wide traffic listing may not spell out. However, the project page is not a replacement for checking the current traffic and closure services; National Highways A47 project information directs motorists to those services for updates.
When closure information was last updated
National Highways says the daily closure report is updated twice each weekday, except bank holidays. Weekend updates are made on the preceding working day. The report states: “This information is correct at the time of publication, but is subject to change at short notice, especially in periods of poor weather.” Use it as advance notice, then check again close to departure.

Which roads this guidance covers
This guidance concerns the A47 in England and the parts of the major road network managed by National Highways. GOV.UK directs travellers to Traffic Scotland and Traffic Wales for the devolved networks. Conditions and local arrangements can change, so confirm them using the official services for the relevant part of your journey.
