To check a share price, open the official BSE or NSE market-data page, search for the company name or trading symbol, then check the quote’s timestamp and data-status label before treating it as current. NSE’s equity market page displays fields including last traded price, open, high, low, previous close, change, volume and 52-week range; its page identifies the display as streaming and shows an “As on” time in IST when populated. A displayed price without its time and status is incomplete information.
How to find a share quote on an exchange page
- Choose the exchange. Start with the official BSE or NSE market-data display. A listed company may have a quote on either exchange, but the page you use determines which exchange’s displayed market data you are viewing. If you are comparing displays, make sure you are looking at the same company and security on both exchanges; do not assume that a quote shown on one exchange is a quote from the other.
- Search for the company. Enter its company name or trading symbol in the market-data page’s search. Check that the result is the company and security you intended before reading its quote. Searching by symbol can help distinguish a particular listed security from similarly named results, while the company name can help you confirm the match.
- Read the time and status first. On NSE’s equity market page, look for the “As on” timestamp, shown in IST when populated, and the streaming status. For BSE, inspect whatever timestamp and data-status information the public page displays; do not assume a particular refresh interval. The displayed time and status tell you how to interpret the number, not merely when you happened to open the page.
- Read the quote as a set of fields. Note the last traded price alongside the previous close, session range, change and reported trading activity. The LTP alone does not tell you when the trade occurred or how the price compares with the day’s range.
Prices and session values can change. NSE’s displayed quote is identified as streaming, but the timestamp and status remain important context. A page that is not showing a populated timestamp, or whose status does not say what you expect, should not be treated as confirmed current data. If the display does not clearly identify its timing, look for the exchange’s product description or choose a source that states whether it is streaming, a snapshot or delayed.

For a quick check, the exchange display is a practical starting point: find the right instrument, verify the status and time, and then read the quote fields together. If you need to use data in software or show it to customers, that is a different task from looking up a price once and may require a product with defined access terms.

NSE’s equity market table includes the following fields. Their purpose is easiest to understand by reading them together rather than treating any one value as a complete account of the share’s trading.

| Field | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Last traded price (LTP) | The price shown for the last trade. | Read it with the page’s timestamp and previous close; do not assume it is current if the time or data status is unclear. |
| Open | The session’s displayed opening price. | Use it as one point of reference for the session, not as a substitute for the current displayed price. |
| High and low | The session’s displayed price range. | Compare LTP with these values to see where it sits within the displayed range. |
| Previous close | The prior closing price shown for comparison. | Use it to put the displayed change in context. |
| Change and percentage change | The displayed movement relative to the page’s comparison basis. | Check the basis before interpreting the percentage, especially around a corporate action. |
| Volume and value | Reported trading-activity fields in the quote table. | Consider them alongside price movement; they describe activity, not a guarantee about what happens next. |
| 52-week high and low | Longer-period reference points displayed with the quote. | They provide a broader comparison than the session’s high and low. |
One useful way to read the table is to start with LTP and its timestamp, then compare the price with the previous close and the session’s open, high and low. Change and percentage change summarize movement against the page’s comparison basis; volume and value add activity context. The 52-week high and low widen the view beyond the current session. None of these fields, on its own, establishes whether a share is suitable for an investor or predicts what it will do next.
Why the change percentage can need context
NSE notes that its percentage-change calculation may use adjusted prices around corporate actions, including dividends, bonus issues, consolidations, rights issues and face-value splits. As a result, the displayed percentage may not be a simple comparison of the current number with an unadjusted previous-close number. If the percentage seems inconsistent with a subtraction you have made, check the page’s stated comparison basis and whether a corporate action is relevant. The adjustment note matters because a corporate action can change the reference used for the comparison even though the displayed percentage remains a concise summary.
What a quote does not tell you
A quote table is a view of specified price and activity fields; it is not, by itself, a complete order book or a recommendation to buy or sell. For someone who only wants to check a share price, the displayed LTP, context fields, timestamp and status are generally the practical essentials. A user building a trading, analytics or distribution application may need a separately specified data product, with appropriate depth, delivery and usage rights.
In particular, a quote with LTP and session statistics should not be confused with a feed that provides multiple bid and ask levels. NSE describes distinct products for the best bid and ask, additional order-book levels and a full order book. Those products answer a more detailed market-data need than a simple quote lookup.
How to tell whether data is streaming, delayed or a snapshot
“Live” is often used loosely. Before relying on a price, distinguish the page’s displayed status from the type of data product involved. NSE’s public equity page describes its display as streaming and supplies an “As on” time in IST when populated. Its product information also describes snapshot products and a 15-minute-delayed snapshot. BSE’s data-vending materials describe delayed data products, but a specific delay or refresh rate should not be assumed for every BSE public quote display.
- Streaming: NSE identifies its equity market display as streaming. Check the page’s timestamp and status rather than inferring freshness from the word “live” in a search result or elsewhere.
- Snapshot: A snapshot is a captured view rather than a continuous stream. NSE describes snapshot products, so confirm the product’s delivery and timing details if you need a defined update pattern.
- 15-minute-delayed snapshot: NSE describes this product as delayed by 15 minutes. It is not equivalent to a streaming feed for decisions that depend on the latest market information.
- Delayed BSE data: BSE describes delayed data among its data products. Check the particular page or product’s terms for the actual delay rather than assuming one for all BSE displays.
- End-of-day or historical data: These products serve different needs from a current intraday quote. NSE lists end-of-day and historical data, while BSE’s tariff includes end-of-day and historical market data.
These labels describe different freshness expectations. Streaming indicates a continuously updating display or feed as described by the provider; a snapshot gives a view at a point in time; a delayed product intentionally trails the market; and end-of-day or historical data is intended for a different time frame. The available label does not by itself tell you every technical detail, so check the specific product terms when update timing matters.

For a one-off check, the exchange page’s status and timestamp are the key clues. For software or business use, ask the exchange or provider to confirm the data’s timing, coverage and delivery format for the exact product being offered. Do not infer that a product described for one use case has the same freshness or terms as a public display.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow NSE market-data depth differs by feed
NSE’s paid data information distinguishes products by the number of order-book levels they expose. A deeper feed supplies more bid-and-ask price levels; it does not mean that every user needs that depth or that the feed is automatically suitable for every use.
| NSE data type | Depth described by NSE | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Best bid and best ask | The top bid and ask prices, rather than several levels of prices. |
| Level 2 | Up to five best bid and ask prices | Multiple price levels on each side of the order book. |
| Level 3 | Up to twenty best bid and ask prices | A broader view of order-book levels than Level 1 or Level 2. |
| Tick-by-tick | Full order book | The product NSE describes as providing the full order book. |
These descriptions establish differences in depth, not a universal ranking for every application. A reader checking a price manually may not need order-book depth at all. A developer or data business should compare depth with the intended use and verify delivery details, coverage, eligibility and current terms with NSE. More levels mean more order-book information, but the appropriate choice depends on what the application must display or analyze.
Using exchange data in an app or business
For an individual checking a quote, begin with the public market-data display. For an application, business or other systematic use, treat data access as a separate product decision rather than assuming that a public webpage grants access to a reusable feed.
What the exchanges describe
NSE’s broader data-vending information lists real-time, end-of-day or historical, and corporate data. It states that its tariff is effective April 1, 2026. BSE’s tariff describes real-time, intraday snapshot, delayed, end-of-day and historical market data. These categories help identify what to ask about; they do not establish that every product is available to every customer or in every geography.
BSE’s official data-vending information describes a process involving registration, KYC, plan selection, agreements and payment for access to its data products. NSE also describes paid products with different feed depths and snapshot options. Confirm current eligibility, product coverage, delivery format and pricing directly with the relevant exchange before planning a technical integration or budget. Tariffs and access terms can change, so treat April 1, 2026 as the effective date stated for NSE’s broader data-vending tariff, not as a guarantee that every product or customer category has identical terms.

Questions to settle before selecting a feed
- Freshness: Is the product streaming, a snapshot, delayed, or end-of-day?
- Depth: Do you need a best bid and ask, several order-book levels, or a full order book?
- Coverage: Does it include the equity, derivatives, indices or corporate data you need?
- Delivery: What format and access method does the specific product provide?
- Use rights: Is your planned use internal, commercial display, redistribution, or another use covered by the terms?
- Price and eligibility: What current tariff, application process and customer requirements apply?
These are separate comparison axes. A low-depth product may be enough if an application only needs the best bid and ask, while a user requiring a broader order book would need to examine the higher-depth options. A delayed snapshot may fit a different purpose from a streaming feed. Coverage, delivery and permission also matter: a technically suitable feed is not automatically licensed for every form of display or redistribution. Ask the exchange or provider to confirm all of these points for the product and intended use, rather than choosing on the word “real-time” alone.
There is no one price or access requirement that can be assumed across the listed products from these descriptions. BSE’s access process includes registration, KYC, plan selection, agreements and payment; NSE and BSE describe multiple data categories and tariffs. A business should request current product and pricing details for its customer category and intended use. An individual who only wants to see a quote does not need to treat a paid data product as a prerequisite for checking the exchange display.
Public quotes, licensing and redistribution
Being able to view a quote on a public page does not, by itself, establish permission to copy, redistribute or commercially display exchange data. NSE’s policy says market data accessed for commercial purposes is provided by NSE Data at a price approved under its governance process. BSE’s tariff describes information products for customer categories that include data vendors, software vendors, app developers and researchers.

Do not infer a commercial reuse right from browser access, a public page, or a data product’s technical availability. Clarify whether the permission covers the particular audience and method of display you plan to use.
NSE’s official MCP page states: “The data is provided strictly for educational and informational purposes; it is not intended for real-time trading, investment advice, or commercial deployment.” NSE also says that the MCP interface and its data do not grant rights to commercially exploit or redistribute data, and disclaims endorsement or responsibility for output produced by third-party AI applications. Treat that page’s restrictions and disclaimer as distinct from any separately licensed exchange-data product.
Common quote-checking mistakes
- Reading LTP without checking time: A price number alone does not show how current the displayed information is. Check the timestamp and status first.
- Assuming “live” means the same thing everywhere: Streaming, snapshot and delayed products are different. Use the label and product description, not an assumption about refresh speed.
- Comparing change percentages without checking their basis: Corporate actions can affect the adjusted-price basis NSE uses for percentage change.
- Confusing a quote with order-book depth: A displayed price is not the same as a Level 2, Level 3 or tick-by-tick feed.
- Using a public page as a commercial data licence: Public viewing does not establish a right to republish or redistribute the data.
- Assuming BSE’s public display has a particular delay: Inspect its current page status and timestamp; verify a specific product’s timing with BSE.
- Treating a snapshot as a continuous feed: A snapshot is a captured view; verify update timing if your use depends on repeated or continuous updates.
- Choosing feed depth before defining the need: The distinction between best bid and ask, up to five levels, up to twenty levels and the full order book matters mainly when the application requires that detail.
- Budgeting from an old or broad tariff description: Confirm the current price, eligibility and terms for the exact product and use case with the exchange.

How can I tell if an NSE quote is current?
NSE’s equity market page identifies its display as streaming and shows an “As on” timestamp in IST when populated. Check both the timestamp and the status. If the timestamp is missing or the status is unclear, do not treat the number as confirmed current data.
Does BSE always show real-time prices?
Do not assume a particular refresh rate for every BSE public quote display. Inspect the current page’s timestamp and status, and check the terms of a specific BSE data product if you need to know its exact delay or update timing.
What is the difference between LTP and the bid or ask?
LTP is the page’s last traded price field. Bid-and-ask levels are order-book information: NSE describes Level 1 as the best bid and ask, Level 2 as up to five best bid and ask prices, Level 3 as up to twenty, and tick-by-tick as the full order book. A quote table and a deeper order-book feed are not the same product.
Is a 15-minute snapshot the same as streaming data?
No. NSE describes a 15-minute-delayed snapshot as a separate product from its streaming equity display. A snapshot is a captured view, and the specified delay means it should not be treated as equivalent to a streaming feed.
Can I use a public exchange quote in my app or redistribute it?
A public page alone does not establish a right to copy, commercially display or redistribute exchange data. Contact the relevant exchange or data provider about subscription, display, redistribution and licensing terms for your intended use.
Do I need to pay to check a share price?
The practical first step for an individual quote check is the exchange’s public market-data display. Paid data products are a separate consideration for users integrating data into an application or business; confirm current availability, eligibility and pricing directly with the exchange.
Best Value
Why might the percentage change differ from my calculation?
NSE says percentage change may use adjusted prices around corporate actions such as dividends, bonus issues, consolidations, rights issues and face-value splits. Check the page’s comparison basis before comparing its percentage with a calculation based on an unadjusted previous close.
