How to Check Live Buoy and Ship Locations in the South Pacific

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an ocean-observing map for buoys and an AIS vessel tracker for ships. For the tropical Pacific, the TPOS interactive map is the best starting point; PacIOOS Voyager adds Pacific Islands observations and near-real-time wave-buoy conditions. For drifting buoys in the open ocean, use NOAA AOML’s Global Drifter Program map. For a named ship, search an AIS tracker such as MarineTraffic and inspect the received timestamp and whether the report came from a terrestrial or satellite receiver.

“Live” has limits offshore. Receiver coverage, satellite reporting intervals, inactive transponders and stale data can leave a vessel or buoy absent from a map. Always read the platform’s update time, source type and coverage notes before treating a dot as a current position.

Choose the right map before you search

Buoys and ships are tracked for different reasons and by different systems. An observing map represents an instrument platform and may expose measurements, deployment details and sensor metadata. An AIS map represents vessels broadcasting an identification and navigation signal that a receiving network has detected. Searching for a ship on a buoy map, or expecting a buoy map to provide minute-by-minute movement, leads to the wrong result.

What you need Best starting point What it shows Freshness and limits
Moored, tsunami and other tropical-Pacific observing platforms TPOS Interactive Map Moored and tsunami buoys, drifters, Argo floats, tide gauges, high-frequency radar and other platforms, with deployment and sensor information where available Use the platform’s displayed metadata and observation time; no single region-wide update interval is stated
Pacific Islands observations and wave buoys PacIOOS Voyager Observations, forecasts and historical ocean data; island-region wave buoys provide near-real-time conditions Near-real-time observations are not the same as a guaranteed instantaneous position
Drifting buoys crossing the open Pacific NOAA AOML Global Drifter Program map Global drifter-array locations The program FAQ describes the location map as updated weekly
A named commercial, research or service vessel An AIS tracker such as MarineTraffic Vessel identity and reported positions received by terrestrial or satellite AIS Coverage and report intervals vary; offshore satellite reports can be less frequent
Recent fishing-vessel activity and tracks Global Fishing Watch map Historical and recent AIS-based activity Its FAQ says displayed AIS data reaches 72 hours before the present, so it is not an immediate-location tool

What “live” means for South Pacific maps

There is no universal live standard. A buoy may transmit a measurement on a scheduled cycle, while a ship’s position may be shown only after a receiver has collected and uploaded an AIS message. “Near real time” generally means a short processing and transmission delay, not a promise that the marker is moving on your screen continuously.

For ships, two timestamps matter: when the vessel broadcast its position and when the tracking service received or processed it. A marker can remain visible after its last report, or disappear when a service decides that the report is too old. Offshore coverage is especially uneven because the South Pacific contains enormous areas far from shore-based receivers.

For buoys, distinguish a platform’s physical location from its latest measurement. A moored buoy can stay at a fixed deployment point while its wind, wave or temperature readings update. A drifting buoy can move hundreds of kilometres between map refreshes. The map’s platform type and observation timestamp tell you which situation you are viewing.

Step-by-step: check tropical-Pacific buoy locations with TPOS

The Tropical Pacific Observing System map is the most useful first stop when your question concerns instruments rather than a named ship. Its description covers several platform classes and links map points to deployment and sensor details.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Open the map. Go to TPOS Interactive Map.
  2. Frame the South Pacific. Pan and zoom to your area of interest. The tropical Pacific spans a wide band, so start broad and then zoom toward an island group, shipping lane or latitude-longitude pair.
  3. Identify the platform type. Select a marker and check whether it is labelled as a moored buoy, tsunami buoy, drifter, Argo float, tide gauge, high-frequency radar site or another observing platform.
  4. Open the metadata. Look for deployment details, sensor information and the WMO identifier when supplied. The WMO ID is useful when you need to match the platform with another data service or a report.
  5. Read the observation time. Treat the position and the measurement time separately. A platform can have a known deployment location even when its latest sensor record is older.
  6. Record the evidence. For a field report, save the platform name or WMO ID, coordinates, platform type and the displayed update time rather than copying only the map screenshot.

Which TPOS markers answer which question?

  • Moored buoys: fixed observing stations for weather and ocean measurements.
  • Tsunami buoys: pressure and sea-level observing systems used in tsunami-monitoring networks.
  • Drifters: free-moving platforms whose positions change with currents.
  • Argo floats: autonomous profilers that dive and surface on a programmed cycle.
  • Tide gauges and high-frequency radar: coastal or near-coastal observing infrastructure rather than free-floating buoys.

Do not infer that every marker provides the same measurements. The sensor and deployment fields are the authoritative indication of what a platform can report.

Use PacIOOS Voyager for Pacific Islands and wave buoys

PacIOOS provides Voyager, a free interactive map for observations, forecasts and historical ocean data in the Pacific Islands region. It is particularly useful when you need local wave conditions or island-focused layers rather than a global drifter view.

  1. Open PacIOOS Voyager. Start at the PacIOOS site and launch its Voyager map.
  2. Choose the observation layer. Turn on wave-buoy, ocean-condition or other observation layers. Disable unrelated forecast and historical layers if the screen becomes crowded.
  3. Zoom to the island group. Search visually around American Samoa, Hawai‘i, or another Pacific island area, then select the buoy symbol nearest your location.
  4. Inspect the station panel. Read the station name, latest observation time, wave or meteorological fields and any link to a longer time series.
  5. Compare time labels. A near-real-time wave value is a current observation product; a historical graph may show older records even though the station itself is still active.

For American Samoa, the National Weather Service’s Marine page directs readers to PacIOOS and NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center for information on the Aunuʻu and King-Poloa buoys. Use those station names when you need a local reference instead of scanning the entire region.

What “near-real-time” wave data can and cannot tell you

A wave buoy’s latest height, period and direction describe conditions at the station, not every point between the station and your boat. Currents, reefs, shoaling and weather systems can create different conditions nearby. Check the observation timestamp before making a navigation or safety decision, and use official marine forecasts for decisions that require warnings.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
  1. Open the global array map. Use the interactive map and zoom into the South Pacific.
  2. Click a drifter. Open its identifier and inspect its track or most recent location, if supplied.
  3. Check the map’s age. The Global Drifter Program FAQ says the current location map is updated weekly. That cadence is not minute-by-minute live tracking.
  4. Use the date in context. A marker can represent the latest map update rather than a position measured moments ago. Quote the displayed date when reporting where the drifter is.

A 14 September 2026 snapshot showed 1,133 buoys in the global drifter array. That is a dated, worldwide count—not a South Pacific total—and it should not be presented as the number currently operating in the South Pacific. No South Pacific-only current buoy count is established by the cited sources.

The distinction between a weekly location-map refresh and a buoy’s own transmission schedule matters. The map may be refreshed in batches, while the drifter can continue transmitting between refreshes. For the freshest operational reading, follow any station-level data link supplied by the program rather than relying on the map symbol alone.

Find a named ship with AIS

Automatic Identification System (AIS) is the practical way to look for a named ship. Search by vessel name, IMO number or another identifier in an AIS service, then verify the age and source of the displayed position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the tracker. Use an AIS vessel tracker such as MarineTraffic.
  2. Search precisely. Enter the vessel’s name or identifier. Common names can produce several matches, so compare the ship type, flag, dimensions or call sign shown in the results.
  3. Open vessel details. Select the intended ship and read its last-position time, destination or voyage fields where available.
  4. Check the reception source. Look for a terrestrial or satellite label. Terrestrial AIS generally comes from shore stations and is strongest near coasts and ports; satellite AIS extends coverage offshore.
  5. Check the report age before interpreting the dot. A recent timestamp supports a stronger “last reported position” statement than an old timestamp does.
  6. Save the exact time and source. Record the vessel identifier, coordinates, received time and reception type if you need to share or audit the result.

Terrestrial versus satellite AIS

Reception type Where it works best What to expect in the South Pacific Interpretation
Terrestrial AIS Coastal waters and ports within range of shore receivers Reliable around populated islands and approaches with receiving stations; not continuous across the open ocean A missing offshore marker may simply be outside shore-station coverage
Satellite AIS Open ocean and remote areas where satellites can detect the transmission Broader geographic reach, but reception gaps and longer intervals between reports are possible A satellite position can be geographically broad in coverage yet less frequent in time

MarineTraffic’s support guidance explains that its live map depicts vessels equipped with an operational AIS transponder when they are within range of an AIS receiving station. The support article states: “All vessels that are equipped with an operational AIS transponder and sail within the reception range of an AIS receiving station, installed on the shore, are depicted on the MarineTraffic Live Map.” The statement is attributed to Vasilis Kontas in the May 9, 2025 help article, Why can’t I see a vessel on the Live Map?

For the service’s explanation of how a position was received, see How was the vessel’s position received — terrestrial or satellite?. It notes that satellite positions in remote ocean areas can arrive less frequently than shore-based reports.

Why an AIS ship may vanish from the map

MarineTraffic says it removes a vessel from its live map when it has not received a fresh position for 24 hours. That is a service-specific display rule, not proof that the ship stopped, sank or left the area. An inactive or malfunctioning transponder, poor satellite reception, receiver outages and ordinary coverage gaps can all produce a blank result.

Use Global Fishing Watch for recent activity, not immediate location

Global Fishing Watch is useful for examining recent vessel activity, fishing patterns and historical tracks. Its map is open access and can provide context when you want to know where a vessel has been operating rather than where it is this minute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its FAQ, Is the information I’m seeing in the map real-time?, says the AIS data displayed reaches 72 hours before the present. Treat the newest point as delayed historical data. Do not use that map alone to answer an immediate “where is the ship now?” question, and do not describe its latest point as live.

How to interpret a blank, old or conflicting position

A blank map is an observation about the data pipeline, not automatically an observation about the ocean. Work through these checks in order.

  1. Verify the object type. Confirm that you are looking for a buoy, drifter, float or ship in the correct service.
  2. Check the time label. Look for “last received,” “last update,” observation time and map-refresh date. A weekly drifter-map refresh and a ship report received minutes ago are not comparable.
  3. Check the source. Determine whether the ship point came from terrestrial or satellite AIS. For a buoy, identify the platform and whether the displayed field is a live observation or historical record.
  4. Widen the geographic view. A marker can be just outside the initial map extent, or a vessel can have moved beyond the area you first selected.
  5. Search by identifier. Vessel names can be duplicated or changed. Use an IMO number or call sign when available; use a buoy or WMO ID for observing platforms.
  6. Compare a second authoritative service. For Pacific Islands buoys, compare PacIOOS with the relevant National Data Buoy Center or local marine page. For drifters, compare the platform metadata with the NOAA AOML map date.
  7. Report the result precisely. Say “last reported at [time]” or “shown on the weekly map,” not “is currently there,” unless the service provides a genuinely current observation and the timestamp supports that wording.

Common symptoms and likely explanations

Symptom Likely explanation What to do
No ship marker offshore Outside terrestrial receiver range, satellite reception gap, inactive transponder or stale record Check the last-received time and satellite/terrestrial label; search by identifier and try again later
Ship marker disappears after a day The tracker has not received a fresh position Use the last reported position and its age; do not infer the ship’s status
Buoy appears fixed while conditions change It is a moored station reporting changing measurements Read the platform type and sensor fields
Drifter position seems old The global location map is refreshed weekly Quote the map date and avoid minute-by-minute wording
Global Fishing Watch shows a vessel behind the AIS tracker The map’s AIS display is delayed by up to the stated 72-hour boundary Use it for recent activity and tracks, not immediate location

A reliable workflow for a South Pacific position check

When you need a defensible answer rather than a quick glance, use the following sequence.

  1. Define the target. Write down the buoy or vessel name, identifier, approximate area and the time window that matters.
  2. Select the system. Choose TPOS for tropical-Pacific platforms, PacIOOS for Pacific Islands and wave observations, NOAA AOML for drifting buoys, or AIS for ships.
  3. Capture the first-party timestamp. Record the observation, received-position or map-update time before moving to another screen.
  4. Capture the platform or reception metadata. Save the WMO ID, vessel IMO number, platform type, sensor name, and terrestrial or satellite source where shown.
  5. Cross-check only when it answers a specific uncertainty. Use a second map to test coverage or freshness, not to create false precision from two stale points.
  6. Phrase the result with the evidence. For example: “The vessel’s last satellite AIS position was received at [displayed time],” or “The drifter was shown at these coordinates on the weekly map update.”

Safety and operational cautions

These public maps are situational-awareness tools, not replacements for navigation equipment, official warnings or direct communication. A ship can move substantially between AIS reports, and a buoy’s measurement represents conditions at one station. Before making a voyage, search-and-rescue, weather or collision-avoidance decision, consult the responsible maritime authority, current forecasts and onboard instruments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a missing AIS signal as evidence that a vessel is absent. Likewise, do not treat a buoy marker as proof that its sensors are functioning at the moment you view the map. The timestamp, source type and platform metadata are part of the position information.

What you can state confidently

  • TPOS and PacIOOS are appropriate entry points for Pacific-region observing platforms and island observations.
  • NOAA AOML’s drifter map is global and its FAQ describes the location map as updated weekly.
  • AIS trackers can combine terrestrial and satellite reception; offshore satellite reports may be less frequent.
  • A ship disappearing from a live map can reflect a 24-hour freshness rule or a reception gap, not a confirmed absence.
  • Global Fishing Watch is valuable for recent activity but its displayed AIS data reaches only 72 hours before the present, so it is not live tracking.
