To see how much ink remains, use the method your HP printer supports: open the HP app and read Estimated supply levels, check the printer’s control-panel ink indicator, open HP Printer Assistant on Windows, or use Printers & Scanners > Options & Supplies > Supply Levels on macOS. On HP Ink Tank and Smart Tank models, read the transparent reservoir windows and keep every color between its minimum and maximum marks.
These figures are estimates, not a measured volume or guaranteed page count. A low warning does not automatically mean you must stop printing; replace the cartridge when it is depleted or when print quality is no longer acceptable.

Identify your printer before checking or ordering ink
Ink-level menus differ among HP inkjet models, operating systems, and regions. Find the exact model name printed on the front, top, or rear of the printer, or in the HP app’s printer details. Record the complete model family and number rather than relying on a description such as “HP DeskJet” or “HP ENVY.” Different models in the same family can use different cartridge numbers, page yields, and software features.
This guide covers liquid ink in HP inkjet printers. Laser models use toner and can expose their supply information through different screens. If your machine is a laser printer, use the toner instructions for that specific model instead of assuming the ink steps below apply.

For model-specific labels, HP’s official level-checking guide is the best reference: Check HP printer ink or toner levels. HP support pages are regional, so a menu name or language can differ from the examples shown here.

| Where you check | What you need | What you will see | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printer control panel | A printer with a screen or status controls | An ink-drop, cartridge, Ink Levels, or similar indicator | Menu names and button paths vary by model |
| HP app | Phone, tablet, or computer with the printer added | Estimated supply levels beside the printer image | Readings can take a few minutes to appear; features vary by platform, printer, system configuration, and region |
| Windows HP Printer Assistant | Windows computer with HP software installed | An Estimated Levels option in the top menu | The option may be absent for some models or installations |
| macOS Printers & Scanners | Mac with the printer installed | A Supply Levels tab under Options & Supplies | Only an estimate is shown |

Check ink from the printer’s control panel
Many HP printers can report supplies without a computer. Wake the printer and inspect the home or status screen for an ink-drop icon, a cartridge icon, an Ink Levels menu, or a color/black supply indicator. Some models place the reading under a Setup, Tools, Reports, or Printer Information menu. Others show the indicators whenever the printer is idle.
There is no universal sequence of button presses. Touch-screen models may open a supply panel when you tap the ink icon; button-only models may require arrow keys and an OK button. Follow the labels on your own display rather than applying a sequence from a different HP model. If the panel offers both ink and toner entries, choose the ink or cartridge entry for your inkjet printer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA panel indicator can be useful when the printer is not connected to a computer, but it may be less detailed than the software view. It normally identifies black and color supplies and displays a bar or warning state, not an exact milliliter quantity. Use the panel reading together with the quality of a test page when deciding whether to replace a cartridge.
Use the HP app on a phone or computer
Open the current HP app, select your printer, and look next to the printer image for Estimated supply levels. If more than one printer is registered, first choose the correct device; the estimate belongs to the selected printer, not to the app account in general.
Allow a few minutes for the levels to load. HP notes that supply information may not appear immediately after the app opens or after a printer is added. Keep the printer powered on and connected while the app refreshes. A sleeping, offline, or recently reconnected printer can delay the update.

HP is transitioning the names HP Smart and myHP to the HP app. Older help pages, screenshots, or installations may still use those names. The available screens depend on your operating system, printer model, system configuration, and region. HP describes the transition and feature differences in HP PCs and Printers – Using the HP app.

Find levels in Windows with HP Printer Assistant
- In Windows, search for the exact printer name and open HP Printer Assistant.
- On the top menu, select Estimated Levels when that option is available.
- Read the black and color indicators for the selected printer.
HP Printer Assistant is installed with HP’s printer software, but not every installation exposes the Estimated Levels option. If it is missing, use the HP app, the printer panel, or Windows’ installed-printer information instead of treating the missing menu as an empty-cartridge warning.
If the software is not installed, HP’s setup guidance points to HP Easy Start and the Full Software and Drivers choice. Use HP’s official setup route for your model and operating system; driver packages and installation choices can change over time. Avoid third-party driver-download pages, which may provide the wrong package or unwanted software.
After installing or updating the software, reopen HP Printer Assistant and confirm that it is communicating with the intended printer. A driver for a similarly named device can open successfully while showing no supply data for the printer you actually use.

Check supply levels in macOS
- Open Spotlight with Command-Space and search for Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP printer in the list.
- Choose Options & Supplies.
- Open the Supply Levels tab.
macOS displays estimated levels supplied by the printer driver. If the tab is unavailable, the current driver or model may not expose level data through macOS. Check the HP app or the printer’s own panel instead. Removing and re-adding a printer can change the driver in use, so record the printer model before changing the installation.

The macOS reading is still an estimate. It is useful for planning a replacement, but it does not promise a specific number of pages because page coverage, print mode, cleaning cycles, and document type affect consumption.
Read the reservoir windows on HP Ink Tank and Smart Tank printers
Tank-style printers provide a physical check. Look through each transparent reservoir window and compare the ink height with the printed minimum and maximum marks. Check black, cyan, magenta, and yellow separately; one color can be low while the others remain near full.
Keep the level between the two marks. HP warns that allowing a tank to fall below the minimum can produce poor print quality. Do not fill above the maximum line, and do not assume that a bottle intended for one tank model fits another. Follow the filling and bottle instructions for the exact printer model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A tank window is a direct visual indication of ink height, but it still does not convert cleanly to remaining pages. The usable amount depends on the printhead system, cleaning cycles, image coverage, and the point at which the printer can no longer draw ink reliably.
What a low-ink message really means
HP states that “Ink level warnings and indicators are estimates provided for planning purposes.” Read the alert as an advance notice to obtain a compatible replacement, not as a laboratory measurement. HP also recommends checking levels regularly so you can plan supplies before an important print job; see HP inkjet printers – Ink Alert or Low on Ink message.
If the pages still look acceptable, you can generally clear the alert and continue printing. The printer may continue until the cartridge is depleted. Waiting is reasonable for routine drafts, but it is risky before a long report, a form that must be legible, or a color-sensitive image.

Use print quality as the second decision signal
Check the actual output for missing lines, pale areas, streaks, incorrect colors, or a color that disappears. A low estimate with clean output is a planning issue; a higher-looking estimate with obvious defects is a quality issue. When the cartridge is depleted or the output is no longer acceptable, install a new cartridge matched to the printer.

Understand backup behavior
Some HP printers enter a backup mode as ink runs out. Printing may continue with a changed appearance, such as reduced color or reliance on a remaining cartridge. The exact behavior depends on the model and cartridge combination, so do not promise normal color output after a low warning.
Be cautious with refilled or remanufactured cartridges
HP calibrates its low-ink messages for genuine HP cartridges. Levels may be inaccurate after a cartridge has been refilled or remanufactured, and a chip can continue to report an old state. In that situation, judge the cartridge by output quality and whether printing stops, while recognizing that the on-screen percentage may not reflect the ink physically inside.

The HP app is still loading
Leave the printer powered on and connected for several minutes, then refresh the selected printer. Confirm that the app is showing the right device if several printers share the account. If no estimate appears, switch to the control panel or computer method; app availability is model- and region-dependent.
Estimated Levels is absent in Windows
HP Printer Assistant does not expose the option for every model or software installation. Verify that the HP package for the exact model is installed, and use HP’s official setup path if it is not. If the menu remains unavailable, use the HP app or the printer panel rather than installing an unrelated driver.

The number seems wrong after replacing a cartridge
Confirm that the replacement cartridge number matches the exact printer model and regional version. A cartridge that physically fits can still be electronically incompatible. Reopen the app or status panel after installation and print a small test page. If the reading does not change, the printer may not recognize the cartridge, or a refilled/remanufactured chip may be reporting stale information.
A tank printer prints poorly even though ink is visible
Compare every reservoir with its minimum mark and follow the model’s filling instructions. Visible ink above the minimum does not rule out a clogged printhead, air in the ink path, or another maintenance issue. Use the printer’s built-in quality or cleaning procedure for that model before adding more ink; never overfill a tank to compensate for a quality problem.
Decide when and what to replace
- Read the estimate using the method available for your printer.
- Inspect recent pages for fading, streaks, missing lines, or incorrect colors.
- Identify the exact printer model and the cartridge number or tank-bottle specification required for that model and region.
- Keep a compatible replacement available when the estimate is low, especially before a large or color-critical job.
- Replace the supply when it is depleted or print quality is no longer acceptable, following the model-specific installation instructions.
Do not order a product labeled only “HP printer ink.” Cartridge families can differ by model, region, and color. Match the complete printer model and cartridge number shown in the printer documentation or software. If you use a subscription or automatic-supply service, verify that the enrolled printer and cartridge family are still the ones you own.
For tank printers, replacement means the correct bottle specification and a fill level within the marked range, not a cartridge swap. Keep the caps and labels intact while handling bottles, and follow the model’s safety and filling directions.
How to get more useful readings over time
Check levels on a regular schedule that fits your workload rather than waiting for an urgent warning. A home printer used occasionally may need a check before a school term or tax filing; a frequently used office printer may warrant a weekly glance. Record which color runs out first so you can keep that specific replacement on hand.
Readings can change after maintenance cycles because the printer uses ink for priming and cleaning as well as for pages. Page-count estimates are therefore only planning aids. Heavy graphics, photographs, borderless printing, and high-quality modes consume more ink than sparse text, so two users can see different results from the same displayed level.
When a warning appears, note the date and the print-quality symptoms rather than relying on a percentage alone. This creates a practical threshold for your own printer without pretending that the indicator measures an exact volume.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Use the printer panel, HP app, Windows HP Printer Assistant, macOS Supply Levels, or the physical tank window according to your model.
- HP app readings appear beside the selected printer image and may take a few minutes to load.
- Windows uses HP Printer Assistant > Estimated Levels when supported; macOS uses Printers & Scanners > Options & Supplies > Supply Levels.
- Tank levels belong between the printed minimum and maximum marks.
- Every software and panel value is an estimate. Combine it with actual print quality and the exact model/cartridge compatibility before replacing ink.
