Ask before visiting. The most considerate option depends on their preferences, energy, privacy and timing—not on a universal rule. Make contact easy to receive, listen without pressure, and stay in touch beyond the first news or treatment period.
Choose the channel around what works for them
If you already know how they prefer to communicate, follow that lead. If you are unsure, ask which kind of contact would feel good. A short message lets them reply when they have energy; a call offers conversation if they want it; a visit can provide company when they welcome it and have the energy and privacy for it.

These are options, not a ranking. Respect a no, a delay or a request for rest without asking the person to reassure you. If they do not respond, avoid treating silence as rejection; they may not have the energy or privacy to answer.

You do not need perfect words or answers. The American Cancer Society suggests: “I’m not sure what to say, but I want you to know I care. I’m here for you.” You could also ask, “How are you doing?” or say, “If you would like to talk about it, I’m here” (American Cancer Society).

Make the message easy to receive and answer. For example: “Thinking of you. No need to reply—I’m here if you want to talk.” If you offer a practical favor, make it specific and optional: “I’m going to the shops on Thursday; would it help if I picked anything up?” or “Would a ride to your appointment next week help?” Cancer Research UK recommends asking what specific help is needed and gives examples such as shopping and transport (Cancer Research UK). If they accept, follow through; if they decline, let the offer stand without pressure.
Listen, and let them set the subject
They may want to talk about cancer, everyday life, or neither at that moment. Follow their lead, listen without judgment, and allow silence. You do not have to solve the situation or fill every pause. Cancer Research UK advises letting someone know you are available to listen—and then making sure you are available (Cancer Research UK).

Avoid telling them to “be strong,” “be positive” or “fight it,” promising that everything will be fine, or assuming you know how they feel. Comparisons with another person’s cancer experience and unsolicited advice can also add pressure. Each person’s experience is different; if you do not know the answer to a medical question, be honest rather than guessing.
Keep contact available over time
Support should not depend on the person always initiating. Send an occasional low-pressure message, make a practical offer when you can genuinely follow through, or keep ordinary plans and conversation going if they welcome that. Their preferences and energy may change, so ask rather than assuming they want the same kind of contact each time. Cancer Research UK recommends offering support through diagnosis, treatment and after treatment (Cancer Research UK).

They may be upset or not want to talk; try not to take that personally. Stay available without demanding an explanation or a response.
