To check a Minecraft server port, first read the server’s actual listening port, start the server, forward that port to the host computer, allow it through the computer’s firewall, and then test the public address from outside your home network. Java servers normally use TCP port 25565; Bedrock Dedicated Server normally uses UDP port 19132, but either value can be changed.

The reliable way to test a Minecraft port
An online checker can report an open port only when a server is actively listening and the connection can pass through every network layer between the internet and that server. Use this order:

- Read the configured port in
server.properties(Java) or the Bedrock server configuration. - Start the server completely and leave it running during the test.
- Forward the same port and protocol from your router to the computer running Minecraft.
- Permit inbound traffic in the computer’s operating-system firewall or security suite.
- Find your public WAN IPv4 address or hostname, not a private address such as
192.168.x.xor10.x.x.x. - Run an external port check against that public address and the configured port.
An “open” result means the probe reached a listening service at that moment. “Closed” or “timed out” means the probe did not complete; it does not identify which layer blocked the connection, so use the troubleshooting sequence below.
Find the port your server really uses
Java Edition
Stop the server or otherwise ensure its configuration is saved, then open the server.properties file in the server folder. Locate:

server-port=25565
Java’s usual default is TCP port 25565. Minecraft Help states that the default is 25565 and that this port must be forwarded in the router. PaperMC’s configuration reference also lists server-port=25565.
If the line contains another number, that custom number is the one players must use and the one you must test. For example, server-port=25570 means forwarding and checking 25570, not 25565. Do not confuse this with server-ip. PaperMC documents a blank server-ip as the normal setting, allowing the server to bind to all available interfaces; entering an incorrect local address there can prevent the server from listening.
Bedrock Dedicated Server
MCState lists UDP port 19132 as the default IPv4 game port for Bedrock Dedicated Server. Verify the value in the Bedrock configuration before forwarding or testing because administrators can choose a custom port. Bedrock’s default protocol is UDP, whereas Java’s default game connection is TCP; selecting the wrong protocol in a router rule or port checker produces a misleading failure.
Do not test a query or management port by mistake
A query port, RCON port, remote-console port, or hosting-panel port is not automatically the port used for player connections. Test the game server’s own listening setting. A management service may answer while the Minecraft game port remains blocked, or the reverse.
Java and Bedrock port differences

The edition, configured number, and protocol must agree in three places: the server configuration, the router’s forwarding rule, and the external test.
Make sure the server is listening before you test
Start the server and wait until its console reports that startup has finished. A port checker cannot detect a service that is stopped, still starting, crashed, or listening only on a different port. Keep the console open while testing so you can see whether a connection attempt reaches it.

For a Java server, a successful startup normally leaves the process running without a fatal bind error. If the console reports that the address or port is already in use, another program has claimed that port; stop the conflicting program or select a different server port and update the forwarding rule accordingly.
Test locally before involving the internet. From another device on the same LAN, connect using the host computer’s private address and the configured port. A local connection proves that the server is running and reachable inside the home network, but it does not prove that internet forwarding works. Some routers do not support NAT loopback, so testing your public address from inside the same LAN can fail even when outside players can connect.
Give the host computer a stable local address
A router forwards traffic to an internal IP address. If that address changes when the host reconnects or the router renews its DHCP lease, the rule can point to the wrong computer.
- On the host computer, identify its current private IPv4 address. Windows displays it with
ipconfig; Linux and macOS provide it through their network-status tools. - In the router’s DHCP or LAN settings, create a DHCP reservation for that computer, or configure a carefully chosen static address outside the router’s automatic allocation range.
- Confirm the host still has that address after reconnecting to the network.
Use the reserved address as the forwarding destination. Do not forward to the public WAN address, and do not use an address belonging to a different computer.

Minecraft Help notes that router procedures vary by manufacturer and model. The exact menu may be called Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, NAT Rules, or something similar. The labels differ, but the values you enter are the same.
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface.
- Open the port-forwarding or NAT section.
- Create a rule with a descriptive name such as
Minecraft-Java. - Set the external or public port to the server’s configured number.
- Set the internal or private port to the same number unless you intentionally use a translated port and know which external number players should use.
- Enter the host computer’s reserved private IPv4 address as the destination.
- Select the correct protocol: TCP for a Java server, UDP for the Bedrock IPv4 game port. If your router offers “TCP/UDP” and you have a specific reason to allow both, understand that it exposes more traffic than a single-protocol rule.
- Save or apply the rule, then restart the router only if its interface requires it.
Forward only the game port. You do not need to expose RCON, a query service, a file share, or the router’s administration interface for ordinary players to join. Minecraft’s official server guidance says additional network and firewall setup may be required when people connect from outside the local network.

Allow the connection through the host firewall
The computer’s firewall can reject an otherwise correct router rule. When the server first starts, your operating system may ask whether to allow network access. Permit the server process on the appropriate private network profile, and create an inbound rule for the configured port if the prompt was dismissed.
- Allow the actual Java runtime or Bedrock server executable that is listening, not an unrelated launcher.
- Limit the rule to the required protocol and port.
- Check both the operating-system firewall and any third-party security suite that includes network filtering.
- After changing a firewall rule, keep the server running and test again from outside.
Opening a port in the firewall alone does not create internet access; the router still needs a matching forwarding rule. Conversely, a perfect router rule cannot bypass a firewall that rejects the inbound packet.
Run an external port check
Use an online port checker that tests reachability from the internet. Enter:
- Host: your public WAN IPv4 address or a hostname that resolves to it.
- Port: the exact number from the running server configuration.
- Protocol: the protocol supported by the checker and your edition. Java’s player connection is TCP; Bedrock’s default IPv4 game port is UDP. Some websites check TCP only, so a TCP-only test cannot conclusively validate a UDP Bedrock port.
To find the public address, check the router’s WAN or internet-status page or use a reputable “what is my IP” service. Do not enter a private address such as 192.168.1.25, 10.0.0.8, or 172.16.x.x; those addresses are reachable only within private networks.
Run the check while the server is fully started. MCState describes its checker as testing whether a port is reachable from the internet. A stopped server commonly causes a closed result even when forwarding is configured correctly.
Understand what each result means
Open
An open result means an external probe reached a service listening on that address and port at the time of the test. It confirms internet reachability for that protocol at that moment. It does not prove that every player has the correct Minecraft edition, that authentication is configured correctly, or that the server will remain reachable after the host’s local address changes.

Closed
A closed result means the probe reached the destination but no permitted service completed the expected connection, or a device actively rejected it. Check that the server is running, the tested number matches the configuration, and the router rule targets the current host address and protocol.
Timed out
A timeout means the probe received no completed response. Common causes include a wrong public address, a missing or misdirected forwarding rule, a host firewall silently dropping packets, an ISP block, or carrier-grade NAT. Work through the checks in the next section rather than repeatedly testing the same unchanged setup.

1. Confirm the process and port
- Verify the server console shows a completed startup.
- Read the configuration again and copy the exact port number.
- Check for a startup error stating that the port is already in use or that the server could not bind.
- Make sure you are testing the game port, not RCON, query, or panel access.
2. Check the local network path
From a second device on the same LAN, connect to the host’s private address and configured port. If that fails, fix the server binding, local firewall, or server configuration before investigating port forwarding. If it succeeds, the server is locally reachable and the remaining problem is between the router and the internet.

Compare the router rule’s destination with the host’s current private IPv4 address. DHCP changes are a frequent cause of a previously working server becoming unreachable. Confirm the external and internal port fields and select TCP for Java or UDP for the Bedrock IPv4 game port.
4. Inspect firewall and security software
Temporarily use a narrowly scoped allow rule for the server process or port rather than disabling the entire firewall. If the test succeeds, replace any temporary change with a permanent rule limited to the needed protocol and network profile.
5. Verify the address you are testing
Compare the address shown by the router’s WAN status with the address reported by an external IP service. If they differ, you may be behind another router, a modem in router mode, or carrier-grade NAT. A private WAN address cannot receive unsolicited connections directly from the public internet.
6. Consider ISP restrictions and carrier-grade NAT
MCState lists ISP blocking as a possible reason for an unreachable port. Ask your ISP whether inbound connections are filtered and whether your connection uses carrier-grade NAT. With carrier-grade NAT, your router does not receive a unique public IPv4 address, so a normal home port-forwarding rule cannot publish the server. The ISP may offer a public IPv4 option, or you may need a different architecture such as a managed server or a tunnel that you understand and trust.

7. Retest from a genuinely external network
Use a phone hotspot with Wi-Fi disabled on the phone, or ask someone on another connection to test. Testing the public address from the same LAN can be affected by the router’s NAT-loopback behavior and is not a reliable substitute for an outside probe.
Why a port checker can disagree with a friend’s connection
Port checkers and Minecraft clients do not all test the same protocol or handshake. A TCP checker may report failure for a UDP Bedrock port even though Bedrock clients can connect. Conversely, a generic TCP service could make a Java port appear open while the Minecraft server itself is not accepting the expected game protocol. Use a checker that supports the protocol and port you actually run, then validate with a real Minecraft client from an external network.
DNS can also obscure the result. If players use a hostname, confirm that it resolves to your current public address. A stale DNS record can send players to an old address even when testing the new WAN address succeeds. If your public address changes periodically, use a dynamic-DNS name and keep its update mechanism working.
Security and maintenance after the port opens
- Expose only the game port required by the edition you host.
- Keep the server software, Java runtime where applicable, operating system, and router firmware updated.
- Use a strong operator password and restrict operator privileges to trusted accounts.
- Back up the world before changing server software or network settings.
- Review router forwarding rules periodically and remove obsolete entries.
- Monitor server logs for repeated connection attempts and unexpected administrative activity.
An open port is an invitation for internet traffic, not a guarantee that the server is secure. Port forwarding should be paired with account security, software updates, and a firewall rule that is no broader than necessary.

When home hosting is not practical
If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, blocks inbound connections, changes your public address frequently, or your router cannot create the required rule, self-hosting may remain unreliable despite correct Minecraft settings. A managed Minecraft host avoids exposing your home network and normally provides a publicly reachable endpoint, but it introduces a recurring service cost and a separate provider’s controls. Whichever option you choose, verify that the service supports your edition, protocol, player capacity, backups, and the server version you intend to run.
