A single answer is only one observation: results can vary by product surface, search mode, account context, location, and date.
Set up a repeatable brand-mention check
1. Define what counts as your brand
Write down the exact brand name, common spelling variants, product names, and terms that distinguish your business from similarly named companies. Choose a competitor list and keep it unchanged across the comparison. This list makes your observations consistent; it is not evidence that any service uses your list as a ranking input.

2. Build prompts from real customer questions
Use a fixed set that reflects how customers might discover or evaluate a provider. Include category questions that do not name your brand, comparisons, problem-solving questions, and one direct question about your brand. Keep the wording identical across products and rounds, and save the prompts along with how you selected them.
- Category: “What are the best [category] providers for [need]?”
- Comparison: “How does [brand] compare with [competitor] for [need]?”
- Problem-solving: “What should I look for when choosing a [category] provider for [need]?”
- Direct brand question: “What does [brand] offer?”
Do not put your brand into every prompt. If you do, you will measure how a product responds to a prompted name, not whether it mentions the brand naturally.

3. Record the conditions for each run
Run every prompt separately in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Record the date and time, country or location settings where relevant, account or plan context, product surface, and any visible search mode or selected model. Note whether the answer appears to search the web. A consumer app, a web-search mode, and an API integration are not interchangeable tests.
4. Save the complete answer and links
Keep the exact prompt and full response, plus a screenshot or export and the URLs shown. If the product displays no links or source control, record “no sources shown.” Do not treat missing visible links as proof that the answer was not web-grounded.
5. Code mentions and citations separately
For each answer, record whether it names the brand in text, links to a brand-owned domain, or cites a third-party page that names the brand. Also note competitor mentions, sentiment or accuracy problems, and whether no source links were shown. Open each link and check whether it supports the claim attached to it: a citation is not automatically an endorsement or proof that the answer is correct.
Rank #2
6. Repeat and report the sample
Repeat the same prompt set on a schedule, retaining the original answers so changes can be audited. Report results as, for example, “X of Y answers in this prompt set during [dates] named the brand,” and state the tested surfaces, modes, region, prompt selection method, and sample size. That describes your sample; it does not establish a universal AI ranking or market-wide share of voice.
Check sources in each product
ChatGPT
ChatGPT may search automatically when a question would benefit from current information; users can also select Search in the composer. When a response uses web search, inspect its citations or Sources controls if shown, open the pages, and check whether they support the relevant sentence. OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Its guidance says: “ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed.” (OpenAI Help Center, “Searching the web with ChatGPT”.)
For a site to be eligible for inclusion in ChatGPT Search, OpenAI identifies allowing OAI-Searchbot to crawl and allowing traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses. Eligibility does not guarantee placement or a brand mention.
Rank #3
Perplexity
Record the visible search mode and inspect the sources displayed with the answer. Perplexity’s Pro Search documentation describes multiple web searches and synthesis from sources such as articles, academic papers, forums, and videos. It says of Pro Search: “Every answer includes direct links to the original sources, allowing you to verify facts or explore further.” (Perplexity Support, “What is Pro Search?”.) Treat that statement as a description of Pro Search, not a guarantee that every answer in every product state will show links.
Gemini
In Gemini Apps, look for the Sources button or inline links and open the side panel to inspect related sources. Google states: “Not all responses include related links or sources.” (Google Gemini Apps Help, “View related sources from Gemini Apps.”.) Record a missing Sources button as “no sources shown,” separately from an answer that has sources but does not name your brand.
Do not confuse Gemini Apps with the Gemini API. Google documents Search grounding for the API as a developer integration that can generate queries and return inline URL citation annotations. That is not evidence that every consumer Gemini Apps answer follows the same workflow (Google AI for Developers, “Grounding with Google Search.”).
Turn observations into useful metrics
Keep the denominator visible and calculate separate measures rather than compressing different outcomes into one score.
- Mention rate: answers that name the brand divided by answers in the declared prompt set.
- Owned-source citation rate: answers that link to your own domain. This is distinct from being named in text.
- Third-party evidence: save the publisher, URL, and claim associated with each source. A displayed link shows what was surfaced, not that the entire response is accurate.
- Competitive context: apply the same prompts and coding rules to competitors, and report the actual sample rather than making a market-wide claim from a small manual check.
There is no established universal mention percentage or position to use as a benchmark. Your result is defined by the prompts, dates, modes, product surfaces, region, and sample size you disclose.

What to do if your brand is missing
A missing mention in one response is not proof that the service never mentions your brand. It may reflect the specific question, response, search behavior, or sources surfaced in that run. First check whether the brand appears under a known spelling or product name, then review the source links and compare several prompts and dates before drawing a conclusion.
Best Value
For Google Search generative AI features, Google says they rely on its core Search systems, use retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out, and require pages to be indexed and eligible for Search. Its guidance recommends crawlable content, foundational SEO, and useful, distinctive material; it says special llms.txt files or special markup are not needed for those Google Search features. Google also cautions against pursuing inauthentic web mentions. These are Google-specific recommendations, not universal technical rules for every AI provider. See Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features on Google Search.
Google recommends its Generative AI performance report in Search Console for understanding discovery through Google Search generative AI features. That report is a Google Search measurement option, not a consolidated dashboard for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini Apps. Google also notes that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. A monitoring tool can help organize repeated prompt runs and preserve answers, but claims of privileged access or guaranteed rankings require evidence.
