Find your account-level token list
The authoritative list of personal Hugging Face access tokens is in your account settings, not in the command-line cache on any one computer. Sign in to Hugging Face, open your account menu, choose Settings, and select the Access Tokens tab.

Open the Access Tokens page
- Sign in to the Hugging Face website.
- Open your account settings.
- Select Access Tokens.
- Review every listed token’s name, role and intended use.
The token-management controls include Manage actions for deleting or refreshing a user access token. Treat the website list as the source of truth for credentials issued to your account; a token can still have copies elsewhere even after you remove a local login.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUnderstand the role shown for each token
Hugging Face defines three user-token roles. A read token is limited to read access. A write token includes read access plus the ability to write to repositories. A fine-grained token is scoped to specific resources rather than every resource available to the account.

| Role | What it permits | When it fits | Security consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read | Read-only access | Downloads, inference clients or tools that never publish changes | Safer than write access, but still exposes every resource covered by the token |
| Write | Read and write access to repositories | Publishing or updating repositories when broader repository access is genuinely required | A leaked value can be used to alter content, so do not use it for a read-only task |
| Fine-grained | Access limited to selected resources | Production applications, CI jobs and integrations with a defined repository set | Reduces the blast radius if the credential is exposed |
Hugging Face recommends creating one access token per app or use, and recommends using fine-grained tokens for production. A token named for a particular application, notebook, machine or pipeline is easier to audit than a shared credential whose purpose is unclear.
Decide whether a token should stay active
Inventory by owner and purpose
For each entry, identify the person or service that uses it, the repository or resources it needs, the machine or workflow where it is stored, and the last reason it was retained. Retire credentials associated with decommissioned projects, old notebooks, replaced computers, former integrations and experiments that are no longer running.
- Unknown purpose: treat the token as unnecessary until an owner can explain it.
- Retired workflow: delete the token rather than keeping it “just in case.”
- Active workflow with excessive access: issue a replacement with the narrowest role and resource scope, update the workflow, then retire the old credential.
- Possible exposure: rotate or delete immediately, then investigate every place where a copy may exist.
Replace before removing an active credential
If a running application still depends on a token, create the replacement first. Give it the smallest role that works and, where possible, restrict it to the specific repositories or resources required. Update the application, CI secret, notebook or scheduled job, and verify that the new credential is in use before deleting or refreshing the old one. Separating credentials by app or use prevents one emergency rotation from taking unrelated systems offline.
Delete versus refresh
Use delete when the token has no remaining purpose. Use refresh when an active integration needs a new credential value or when you are rotating a credential after suspected exposure. In either case, update all legitimate consumers and remove stale copies; a website action cannot erase a value copied into another computer, a CI secret, a notebook, a configuration file or shell history.
Delete or refresh a personal token on the website
- Open Settings → Access Tokens.
- Locate the token by its name and role.
- Choose its Manage control.
- Select the delete or refresh action that matches your decision.
- For a replacement, update each authorized consumer with the new value before retiring the old one.
- Record the new owner, purpose and resource scope in your team’s secret inventory without recording the raw token itself.
If one of your own tokens has leaked, Hugging Face’s guidance is to delete or refresh it from the Access Tokens tab. Do this before spending time searching logs: every minute an exposed credential remains valid is another opportunity for misuse.

Remove Hugging Face credentials saved on a computer
The Hugging Face CLI manages credentials stored on the current machine. This is separate from the account-level list in the website. A local logout does not revoke a token that remains valid on Hugging Face’s servers, and website deletion does not remove copies held on other machines.
List locally stored tokens
Run the list command in the environment where you want to inspect saved credentials:
Recommended Free Tools
hf auth list
hf auth ls is an alias for the same listing operation. Use the output to identify token names saved in that local credential store. Run the command separately on other computers, virtual machines, containers or user accounts; each local environment has its own saved copies.
Remove one named local token
After confirming the exact token name, remove it from the current machine with:
hf auth logout --token-name NAME
Replace NAME with the token name shown by the list command. The authentication reference states that logout deletes the token from the machine and removes it from Git credentials stored there.

Remove all saved tokens from the machine
To clear every saved Hugging Face token in the current local store, omit the token name:
hf auth logout
This is useful when a computer is being retired, transferred to another user or treated as potentially compromised. It also removes the saved credentials from Git credentials on that machine. It does not affect server-side validity, other computers, CI systems or files containing copied values.
Website revocation and local logout are different operations
| Operation | What changes | What remains untouched |
|---|---|---|
| Delete or refresh in Settings → Access Tokens | The account-level credential is removed or replaced on Hugging Face | Copies already stored on computers, CI systems, notebooks, files or shell history |
hf auth logout --token-name NAME |
The named credential is removed from the current machine and its Git credential store | The server-side token and copies on every other location |
hf auth logout |
All saved Hugging Face credentials are removed from the current machine | Server-side credentials and copies outside that local store |
For a suspected leak, perform server-side revocation or refresh first, then clean every local and automated copy. Cleaning only the current computer can leave a stolen value usable.
Respond to an exposed token
If the token belongs to you
- Open Settings → Access Tokens immediately.
- Delete the exposed token, or refresh it if a legitimate workflow needs to continue.
- Replace the secret in CI, deployment systems, notebooks, local configuration files and service settings.
- Remove the old value from local credential stores with
hf auth logoutor the named-token form. - Review repository history, build logs and shell history for additional copies, and remove or restrict access to those records according to your organization’s incident process.
Do not wait for evidence of misuse before rotating a credential that appeared in a public repository, issue, screenshot, ticket, terminal recording or log.
If you discover somebody else’s token

https://huggingface.co/api/credentials/revoke
Send a POST request with the raw token in the JSON credentials array. Keep the value in an environment variable or protected file rather than placing it directly in the command:
export HF_LEAKED_TOKEN="$(cat /secure/path/token)"
curl --request POST
--url https://huggingface.co/api/credentials/revoke
--header 'Content-Type: application/json'
--data '{"credentials":["'"$HF_LEAKED_TOKEN"'"]}'
The endpoint invalidates matching tokens immediately and stops them from working everywhere. It returns 202 Accepted whether or not the submitted token existed, so the response cannot be used to determine whether a token was valid. Never publish the request body, command output or environment value in a ticket or incident report.
Keep raw values out of history and logs
Hugging Face advises passing tokens through environment variables or files and avoiding raw values in command lines. A shell can record command text in history, and CI systems often capture command output. Use your platform’s encrypted secret store for automation, mask variables in job logs, restrict file permissions, and ensure debugging output does not print authorization headers or request bodies.
When a token has already appeared in history or logs, treat those records as compromised locations. Rotate the server-side credential, then remove or restrict the exposed records where your retention and audit rules allow it.

Organization and team-managed tokens
What organization administrators can see
Team and Enterprise organizations can list member tokens and identify credentials that are inactive or unused. Revoked tokens are hidden by default in the organization listing. An administrator can enable Show revoked tokens to include them while auditing historical access.
Best Value
Organization-level revocation is limited
An organization administrator can revoke a token’s access to that organization. That action cuts off the token’s organization access, but the same personal token may continue to work for resources owned by the token’s individual owner or other organizations. If the credential itself was exposed, the owner must delete or refresh it at the account level, or the global emergency endpoint must be used for a matching token.
Audit procedure for administrators
- Open the organization’s token-management view with an administrator account.
- Include revoked entries by enabling Show revoked tokens.
- Identify inactive, unowned or unexpectedly broad credentials.
- Contact the owner or service owner before changing a credential that supports a live system.
- Revoke organization access for tokens that should no longer reach the organization.
- For suspected global exposure, coordinate account-level rotation or deletion with the token owner.
Service-account tokens
Service-account tokens are organization-managed credentials rather than personal tokens. Administrators can update their permissions, rotate a token so the previous value stops working immediately, or delete a token to permanently revoke its access.
Hugging Face displays a service-account token only once, when it is created or rotated. Store the value securely at that moment, preferably in an encrypted secret manager with tightly limited access. If the one-time value is lost, do not keep searching for it in plaintext files; rotate the service-account token and distribute the new value through the approved secret channel.
| Credential owner | Primary management location | Revocation reach | Important follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual user token | User Settings → Access Tokens | Delete or refresh the account credential; a matching emergency request invalidates it everywhere | Remove copies from every machine and integration |
| Organization member token | Organization administration plus the owner’s account settings | Administrator action can remove access to that organization only | Use owner-level rotation for exposure affecting other resources |
| Service-account token | Organization service-account controls | Permission update, rotation or deletion under organization management | Save the value when shown; rotation makes the previous value stop working immediately |
Common problems and the correct fix
“I logged out, but the token still works.”
hf auth logout removes the local copy; it does not revoke the server credential. Delete or refresh the token in Settings → Access Tokens, then clean other copies.
“The token is not in my local list.”
The application may be reading an environment variable, a file, a different user profile, a container secret or a CI variable rather than the CLI credential store. Inspect each execution environment without printing the raw value, and rotate the server-side token if its location is unknown.
“I cannot find an organization token.”
Revoked organization tokens are hidden by default. Enable Show revoked tokens in the organization listing before concluding that the entry was never present.
“The emergency endpoint returned 202.”
202 Accepted is returned whether or not a submitted value matched an existing token. It confirms that the request was accepted, not that the credential was valid. Continue with cleanup and incident handling; do not use the response as a validity checker.

Because the value is displayed only at creation or rotation, rotate the service-account token and store the replacement securely. Do not rely on recovering a previously displayed plaintext value.
Quick Recap
Revocation checklist
- Open Settings → Access Tokens and identify the token by owner, name, role and purpose.
- Choose read instead of write when writing is unnecessary; choose fine-grained scope for production resources.
- Create a replacement before retiring a token that an active workflow still needs.
- Delete or refresh the old personal token from the website.
- Run
hf auth liston each relevant machine and remove named or all local copies withhf auth logout. - Replace CI, notebook, deployment and service-account secrets without exposing raw values.
- Search for copies in files, logs and shell history, and restrict or remove those records.
- For an exposed token belonging to someone else, submit it to the documented emergency endpoint without placing the value in public text.
- For organization credentials, remember that administrator revocation may affect only that organization.
- Document the token’s owner and purpose, but never record the token value in the inventory.
