To check whether a Huawei Mate 90 will work with your carrier, first identify the phone’s exact regional model, then compare its official LTE and 5G band list with the carrier’s network and have the carrier check the phone’s IMEI. Also confirm that the device is SIM-unlocked and that the carrier supports the voice, 5G and SIM features you need. A matching band—or the Mate 90 name alone—does not establish full compatibility.
What is known about the Mate 90—and what is not
Huawei’s official specifications identify a China-market Mate 90 with two nano-SIM slots and eSIM support. Huawei notes that eSIM use requires the relevant carrier service and that only some carriers offer it. That confirms a handset capability, not that a carrier in another country will activate that particular regional model. See Huawei’s Mate 90 specifications.

Huawei’s China-market purchase guide lists 12 GB RAM configurations with 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB storage. Those listings establish China-market configurations; they do not establish availability or radio compatibility elsewhere.

Check compatibility in this order
- Identify the exact phone. Find its full model number or SKU and country or region of sale on the box, invoice, in the phone’s settings, or from the seller. “Mate 90” alone may not identify the radio variant. The Huawei pages above are China-market sources.
- Get the official band list for that SKU. Ask Huawei or the seller for the model’s supported LTE bands and 5G NR bands. Get the exact variant, not a list for a similarly named model. Without that list, a band comparison cannot be completed.
- Compare it with the carrier’s network where you will use the phone. Check the carrier’s current LTE and 5G frequencies for your home, work and travel areas. Consider the low-, mid- and high-band 5G layers the carrier uses, as well as LTE bands relevant to coverage and voice. A partial match may mean weaker coverage or lower speeds. T-Mobile’s BYOD guidance says, “Your device must support the frequencies used by T-Mobile,” and warns that partial compatibility can reduce coverage and speed: T-Mobile BYOD guidance.
- Run the carrier’s IMEI check before buying or activating. Use the carrier’s official bring-your-own-device checker with the exact phone’s IMEI. T-Mobile’s IMEI checker checks eligibility; its guidance says to verify frequencies and contact the manufacturer if the device does not appear or the result is uncertain. An IMEI approval is useful, but it does not promise every feature or performance level.
- Confirm the phone is SIM-unlocked. A phone locked to its original carrier may not accept another carrier’s SIM. T-Mobile’s BYOD guidance and Google’s general carrier guidance both address unlocking; if the phone is locked, ask the original carrier about its unlock process.
- Ask about the services you actually need. Confirm voice calling over LTE (VoLTE), 5G access, emergency-calling requirements and eSIM activation, as applicable. Huawei’s eSIM hardware support does not guarantee carrier activation. T-Mobile recommends checking VoLTE and Extended Range LTE as part of BYOD assessment.
Compare carrier options using more than a coverage map
If you are choosing among carriers, evaluate the exact device against each carrier rather than treating a general coverage map or one matching band as a verdict.
| Check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| IMEI eligibility | Whether the carrier’s official checker accepts the exact Mate 90 SKU. |
| Band overlap | Whether the phone’s verified LTE and 5G bands overlap the carrier’s frequencies in the places you use it. |
| Voice and emergency calling | Whether the carrier supports the model’s VoLTE and applicable emergency-calling requirements. |
| 5G access | Whether the device can access the carrier’s relevant 5G layers; band overlap alone does not confirm service access. |
| SIM activation | Whether you can activate with a physical SIM or, if needed, eSIM on this regional model. |
| Unlock status | Whether the phone is unlocked or can be unlocked by its original carrier. |
How to read the result
- IMEI accepted and bands verified: These are positive signs, but ask the carrier to confirm the specific services you need. Carrier acceptance does not guarantee identical coverage, speed or feature support to a carrier-sold device.
- IMEI rejected or no match: Do not assume the phone is unsupported solely from an inconclusive lookup. T-Mobile advises checking frequency support and contacting the manufacturer if uncertain, then follow up with the carrier using the exact SKU and IMEI.
- Band list missing or only partially overlaps: Treat compatibility as unverified. Ask Huawei or the seller for the official radio specifications and the carrier about likely coverage and feature limitations before purchase.
- eSIM is important: Verify activation with the destination carrier for this specific model and region. The eSIM feature in the phone’s specifications is not a promise that a local carrier offers or supports activation.
What you need for a definitive answer
A yes-or-no answer depends on three details: the exact Mate 90 regional SKU, the country and carrier, and the carrier’s current IMEI and service checks. The available Huawei specifications do not show the model’s LTE/5G band numbers, so compatibility cannot responsibly be declared from the model name alone. Obtain the exact band list and check it with the destination carrier before relying on the phone for service.
