How to Check How Much Data Your Smart Home Devices Are Using

Open your router or mesh system’s app, go to its device or client list, select the camera, speaker, thermostat, TV, hub or other smart-home device, and open the usage or traffic view. That screen may show a live rate in Mbps, a historical total in MB or GB, or both. Record the time range and whether the figure covers internet traffic only before deciding which device is consuming your data.

Start with the router or mesh system

The router is the first place to look because it can associate traffic with the device that generated it. Sign in to the app or web administration page for the router that actually routes your smart-home devices. Look for a menu named Devices, Clients, Network map, Usage, Traffic Usage, Activity or Bandwidth Monitor.

Select one device rather than relying on a network-wide total. If the device has an unhelpful name such as a string of letters and numbers, open its details first. Manufacturer, IP address, MAC address, connection type and online status can help you match the entry to the physical product. Rename recognized devices when the app permits it; that makes future checks much faster.

There is no universal router menu or reporting interval. The labels, history available and even the devices included can vary by model, firmware and operating mode. Use the exact manual or support page for your router when the equivalent of a device traffic view is not obvious.

What the dashboard numbers mean

Display What it measures When it helps
Live upload/download rate (Mbps or similar) How quickly traffic is moving at that moment. It can rise and fall sharply. Finding a device that is busy right now, such as a camera uploading video.
Historical upload or download (MB/GB) The amount transferred during the selected interval. Finding which device used the most data today, this week or another saved period.
Combined total Upload plus download, if the product adds them together. Comparing overall device traffic when direction does not matter.
App or category labels An estimate of the domains or services associated with traffic. Investigating what a device may be contacting, but not proving which app generated every byte.

Upload is traffic sent from your home to the internet; download is traffic received by your home. A security camera that sends clips to cloud storage can have modest download and substantial upload. A streaming television generally has the opposite pattern. Always note whether the screen is showing one direction or a combined figure.

A live speed is not a data allowance. A device transferring 5 Mbps for ten minutes uses roughly 3.75 GB in that period, while a brief 50 Mbps burst may use little total data. Historical MB or GB values answer the “how much” question; Mbps answers “how fast right now.”

Documented paths for common systems

These paths are examples from vendor support documentation, not a promise that every model has the same screens. If your version uses different wording, find the device/client traffic page that performs the same function.

Google Home and Google Wifi

  1. In Google Home, open Favourites > Wi-Fi > Devices.
  2. Select the smart-home device to view its upload and download amounts.
  3. Use the device details, including IP or MAC information where shown, to identify an unfamiliar entry.

Google says this list includes devices that used the network during the last 30 days, including devices that are currently offline. The totals displayed next to Devices represent internet (WAN) traffic. In the Google Wifi app, the corresponding route is Network > Devices, followed by selecting a device. Network-wide choices include real time, today, 7 days and 30 days. A device can therefore appear in the list even when it is not connected at the instant you check.

TP-Link Deco or Tether

  1. Open Network > Traffic Usage, or open Network > (Online) Clients, select a client and then choose Traffic Usage.
  2. Choose the device and select upload, download or the combined view.
  3. Use Day view for hourly and daily information covering the last 7 days, or Week view for daily information covering the last 4 weeks.

TP-Link documents a normal reporting delay of 1–5 minutes. Some smart-home cameras do not support the system’s in-depth statistics, so a missing graph does not necessarily mean the camera has used no data.

eero

  1. Open Devices and select a device to see its live upload and download rate.
  2. Open Activity for historical totals.

eero states that all customers can view weekly usage. eero Plus customers can view daily and monthly usage with up to three months of history. Its historical graph represents total uploaded plus downloaded data. The live rate refreshes every five seconds, can fluctuate, and may show idle periods between bursts even while a stream is playing. Historical and live usage are unavailable when the eero system is operating in bridge mode.

ASUS routers

Open Bandwidth Monitor to see current total upload and download and the current bandwidth for each client. An optional Apps analysis attempts to associate bandwidth with applications. ASUS cautions that SSL-encrypted app traffic may be difficult to identify and can be classified as general traffic, so app names are not definitive evidence. Client byte totals remain useful even when the application label is broad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Motorola motosync

Open the connected-device page and select a device. Depending on the product and firmware, the page can include Internet Usage Today, an IP and MAC address, and an overall bandwidth snapshot. Use those identifiers to match the app entry with the physical device.

Internet traffic is not all network traffic

Most router usage reports are designed around traffic crossing the internet/WAN connection. TP-Link explicitly excludes transfers between devices on the local network, and eero says its historical reports omit device-to-device traffic on the same network. A camera sending a stream to a screen or recorder inside your home can therefore generate local traffic that does not appear in a WAN total.

This distinction explains why a router’s total may not match a device’s own counter, a switch statistic or a local network monitor. Use the router report to investigate internet-data consumption and an appropriate LAN monitor when you need every byte moving inside the home.

Cloud-connected products may also contact their servers in short bursts. A graph that is idle for several seconds does not establish that a device is disconnected or malfunctioning; it may simply be waiting between transfers.

Why app and category labels can be wrong

Per-device byte counts are usually more dependable than an app label. TP-Link describes classification by domain. A browser and a mobile app using the same domain can be merged into one category, and background access can be counted there as well. ASUS notes that encrypted traffic may be shown as general rather than attributed to a specific application.

  • Treat a category as an indication of destination or service, not a forensic record of the exact process.
  • Compare the device’s total upload and download with the category breakdown before drawing a conclusion.
  • Look for a sustained change over several checks rather than reacting to one short burst.

A repeatable check for any smart-home device

  1. List the devices. Open the router or mesh app’s device/client page and locate the product. If its name is unclear, compare manufacturer, IP address, MAC address and connection status with the device information.
  2. Rename it. Give the entry a room-and-function name, such as “Kitchen camera,” if the interface supports renaming.
  3. Choose the right metric. Use the live rate to find current activity and the historical amount to measure consumption.
  4. Set a time range. Record whether the graph covers real time, today, 7 days, 30 days, a week, a month or another interval. Do not compare a one-day figure with a four-week figure.
  5. Separate directions. Check upload and download independently before looking at a combined total. High upload often points to video, backups or telemetry; high download often points to streaming, updates or cloud synchronization.
  6. Allow for delay. Refresh after the product’s normal reporting interval. TP-Link says 1–5 minutes is normal for its traffic display.
  7. Repeat at a useful time. Check during an expected activity, such as a camera’s motion event or a television stream, and again when the device should be idle.
  8. Compare with your allowance. Add the device’s historical total to other household traffic only when the periods and WAN scope match. A device report is not automatically the same as your internet provider’s meter.

Finding the device that is using all your data

Start with the router’s network-wide usage view if one exists, then sort or scan clients by historical total. Work from the largest number down rather than disconnecting devices at random. When a client is unfamiliar, pause or unplug one suspected product briefly and refresh the list after the reporting delay. A change in the corresponding client’s traffic helps confirm the match, but do not interrupt safety-critical equipment without a plan.

Typical high-usage patterns

  • Security cameras: continuous cloud recording, high-resolution clips or repeated motion uploads can create sustained upload traffic.
  • Streaming televisions and boxes: long viewing sessions create sustained download traffic; quality changes can alter the rate.
  • Smart speakers and displays: usually modest totals, but software, media or photo synchronization can produce short download bursts.
  • Hubs and thermostats: normally light traffic; a firmware update or repeated connection failures can temporarily increase it.
  • Unrecognized clients: a phone, computer, guest device or virtual interface may be mistaken for a smart-home product. Confirm the manufacturer and MAC address before changing settings.

When a device or graph is missing

Confirm the routing path

Make sure the device is connected through the router or mesh system whose app you opened. Google’s device view covers Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices connected directly to its router or point. A device behind another router, extender in a separate routing mode, cellular connection or a different access point may not appear where you expect.

Check identity details

Use the name, manufacturer, IP address, MAC address and connection status supplied by the router. Some devices randomize wireless MAC addresses or use a companion hub, so the visible client may be the hub rather than the sensor or accessory you are trying to measure.

Verify model and firmware support

Traffic collection is not guaranteed across a product family. GL.iNet says its Data Statistics feature began in firmware v4.9, identifies supported and unsupported models, and lists operating conditions that affect collection. Check the documentation for your exact model and firmware rather than assuming a newer or cheaper sibling has the same feature.

Check operating mode and acceleration settings

eero reports that live and historical use are unavailable in bridge mode. GL.iNet documents that Data Statistics does not take effect in Drop-in Gateway mode, cannot operate with Network Acceleration, and excludes usage from devices forwarded through specified tunnel interfaces. A blank view can therefore be a configuration limitation rather than a zero-usage result.

Wait, refresh and test again

Allow the documented collection interval to pass, then refresh. If the product only reports current rates, it may not retain a historical total at all. TP-Link’s 1–5-minute delay is a useful example of why an immediate refresh can show an incomplete value.

How to decide whether you need different hardware

Do not replace a router solely because one graph is inconvenient. First define the question you need answered and compare the current system with alternatives on the following points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Questions to ask Why it matters
Per-device selection Can you open one client and see its traffic, or only a network total? A network total cannot identify which camera, TV or hub is responsible.
Live versus historical data Does it show current Mbps, saved MB/GB totals, or both? Live rates find an active device; history reveals recurring consumption.
History window How many days or months are retained, and is a subscription required? A short window may miss a monthly backup or billing-cycle spike.
Traffic scope Does the report cover WAN traffic only, or local device-to-device transfers too? You need the same scope when comparing reports.
Operating conditions Are bridge mode, VPN tunnels, acceleration or a particular firmware required? Unsupported paths can leave the graph blank or incomplete.
Attribution Are app labels domain-based, encryption-limited or otherwise approximate? Byte totals may be solid even when the named app is not.

GL.iNet Flint 2 as a documented example

GL.iNet lists the Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) among models supporting Data Statistics, with per-device monitoring and 1-hour, 1-day and 7-day trend views. Its documentation also lists unsupported models and operational exclusions. Confirm the exact firmware, routing mode, tunnel configuration and acceleration settings before treating those views as available in your installation. Retail price, stock and retailer availability are not established here.

Limits you should record with every measurement

  • Time period: write down the selected interval and the date you checked it.
  • Direction: note upload, download or combined.
  • Scope: state whether the dashboard is an internet/WAN report and remember that local transfers may be absent.
  • Reporting delay: leave time for collection and refresh before interpreting a sudden zero.
  • Device support: confirm that the model and firmware support statistics; some cameras expose only limited data.
  • Mode and path: bridge mode, gateway mode, acceleration and VPN/tunnel forwarding can change what is counted.
  • Attribution confidence: treat domain or app categories as approximate, especially with encrypted traffic.

Vendor interfaces change. The documented examples above were checked against support pages accessed on October 13, 2026; ASUS’s bandwidth-monitor page shows a last update of May 2, 2023. Check the current support documentation for your model if a menu or limit differs.

Quick answers to common situations

The router says a camera used little data, but my internet allowance dropped

Check that both measurements cover the same dates and that the camera is connected to the reporting router. The router may omit a camera’s local stream, may not support in-depth statistics for that model, or may have been operating in a mode that bypasses collection. Also check other clients and the internet provider’s meter; a router’s per-device figures do not automatically account for every WAN path.

A device shows a high Mbps rate but a small daily total

That is consistent with a short burst. A live rate describes the instant at which you looked, while the daily total accumulates traffic over the selected period. Use the historical graph to judge consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app category says “general”

Encrypted traffic can prevent application identification, and multiple apps can share a domain. Use the device’s upload and download totals as the stronger signal and treat the category as an estimate.

Why does a device appear offline but still have usage?

Some systems retain recently observed clients. Google says its device list includes devices that used the network in the last 30 days, even when they are offline now. An offline label therefore does not erase earlier traffic.
