Before visiting a Hawaii beach, check the specific beach’s reported conditions, the National Weather Service forecast and active alerts, and any water-quality notices. Recheck on the day you go. At the beach, read posted signs and ask a lifeguard before entering the water: conditions can change faster than a trip-planning report can reflect.
Check conditions in this order
- Look up the specific beach. Hawaii Ocean Safety directs visitors to HawaiiBeachSafety.com for current conditions at lifeguarded beaches. The state says the partner service’s conditions are updated every 15 minutes based on National Weather Service forecasts. That cadence applies to the beach-conditions service; it is not a guarantee that conditions will stay unchanged or that every hazard feed updates on the same schedule.
- Check weather and official alerts for the area. Use the National Weather Service Hawaii forecast and review active watches, warnings, and advisories. Hawaii Ocean Safety recommends checking the local forecast on the day of your beach visit. During severe weather, stay out of the ocean and away from beaches and shorelines until local authorities say it is safe.
- Check water quality as well as surf and weather. Look for water-quality notices and heed any posted warning signs. A Brown Water Advisory (BWA) is issued when Hawaii Department of Health field staff judge there is a strong likelihood that land-based pollutants are entering coastal beach waters and an increased possibility of exceeding the applicable beach action value. After heavy rain or runoff, pay particular attention to these notices.
- Recheck on arrival. Read the beach’s signs, listen for announcements, and follow any closure instructions. Ask a lifeguard about current conditions and hazards before entering the ocean. A website report is useful for planning, but local conditions may have changed since it was updated.
What Hawaii’s beach hazard ratings mean
Hawaii Ocean Safety lists these ratings for lifeguarded beaches. Treat them as warnings about conditions, not as a personal assessment of your swimming ability.

| Rating | Meaning and guidance |
|---|---|
| Yellow: Caution | The lowest nearshore rating, but still calls for caution and vigilance. Yellow does not mean the water is safe for everyone. |
| Red: High Hazard | Swimmers are advised to stay out of the ocean; shoreline activity can also be extremely hazardous. |
| Black: Extreme Hazard | Swimmers are advised to stay out. Strong current, surge, and shorebreak are among the hazards identified. |
| Closed | The beach is closed. Follow closure instructions and do not enter the closed area or water. |
The rating is only one part of the decision. Review the specific hazards shown for the beach and follow lifeguard instructions even if the rating seems less severe than expected. See HawaiiBeachSafety.com’s beach conditions for the location you plan to visit.

Read signs as specific warnings
Posted signs identify local hazards that may not be obvious from shore. Hawaii’s warning-sign guide covers dangerous shorebreak, strong current, high surf, no swimming, no diving, sudden drop-offs, sharp coral, waves breaking on a ledge, and shark sightings. Take a sign seriously and follow its instruction. The absence of a particular sign does not establish that conditions are safe; ocean conditions can change quickly.

When a coastal alert means change your plans
Severe weather
If severe weather threatens, stay out of the ocean and away from beaches and shorelines until local authorities advise that it is safe. Do not rely on a beach-level rating alone when a wider-area weather alert is active.
Tsunami watch or warning
Stay away from the ocean and shoreline during a tsunami watch or warning, and wait for authorities to give the all-clear. If you feel a strong earthquake near the ocean, move inland and to higher ground immediately; a locally generated tsunami may leave little time for an alert.

Brown water or runoff warning
When a water-quality warning sign is posted, Hawaii Ocean Safety advises staying out of the ocean. A BWA concerns possible land-based pollution reaching coastal waters, not just poor visibility or unattractive water color.
Compare beaches by more than a single rating
If you are choosing between beaches, compare the conditions that matter for your planned visit rather than treating a lower hazard rating as a guarantee.
