Use the official GST Portal for GST collection trends: News and Updates carries monthly gross and net collection releases, while Downloads → GST Statistics is the stated route for component data and historical state-wise series. Before comparing figures, check each file’s reporting period, publication date, units, and notes—especially whether it includes import GST and whether it reports collections before or after IGST settlement.
Where to find official GST collection data
The Ministry of Finance said monthly gross and net collection data, along with state-wise IGST settlement data, were available on the GST website under News and Updates. For longer time series and state comparisons, it identified Downloads → GST Statistics. The ministry’s notice, published on 1 August 2024, said component data for CGST, SGST, IGST and cess, as well as state-wise collection and return-submission data, were being regularly updated there with historical details from 2017: Ministry of Finance notice on GST data.

- For historical trends or state-wise series, go to Downloads and find GST Statistics.
- Open the release or file and record its reporting period, publication date, units, and table notes before using a figure.
These are the sections identified in the Ministry of Finance notice. Portal navigation can change, so confirm the live layout rather than relying on an old click-by-click path. Check the date on a file before calling it the latest: the newest state-wise monthly file available on 4 October 2026 has not been established here.

First match the measure and time window. A comparison is meaningful only when both figures cover the same period and use the same accounting basis.

- Match the period: compare the same month across years, or the same financial-year-to-date period. Keep the rupee amounts alongside the reported growth rates.
- Check import treatment: a state-wise table may exclude GST on imports of goods. Read its notes before comparing it with a total collection figure.
- Distinguish collection from post-settlement revenue: a state-wise collection table is not interchangeable with post-settlement SGST. The latter includes the SGST portion of IGST settled to States and Union Territories.
- Separate gross and net: refund treatment can make gross and net figures differ for the same month. Do not compare one basis with the other as if they were equivalent.
- Use amount and growth together: a high growth percentage on a smaller base does not mean that state has the largest collection.

The national gross collection and gross domestic revenue figures describe different measures; the domestic figure should not be treated as a state-wise table total without checking the underlying definitions and notes.

What collection trends can—and cannot—tell you
GST collections can reflect consumption and trade, but they can also move as the taxpayer base, reporting systems, or compliance change. A rise or fall is therefore an indicator to investigate, not a standalone explanation of economic performance. For a sound comparison, state the measure, period, import and refund treatment, and whether the figure is pre- or post-settlement.
