To check GST charged on an online order or cab ride in India, start with the tax invoice or ride ticket—not just the checkout screen. Note the supplier’s name and GSTIN, the invoice date, taxable value, GST rate and tax amount. Look up the supplier’s GSTIN using the GST Portal’s pre-login Search Taxpayer tool, then compare the rate with the applicable CBIC rate entry for the product or service on the transaction date. A valid GSTIN confirms taxpayer details and status; it does not prove that the rate or classification on your bill is correct.
What to check on the bill
For an online purchase, download the tax invoice or order invoice. The marketplace name may differ from the supplier named on the invoice, so check the supplier actually identified on the tax document. For a cab ride, open the completed ride receipt or ticket and inspect the supplier and fare breakdown.

- Taxable value, GST rate and tax amount
- Separate fees, discounts or adjustments that affect the total
CBIC’s invoice rules prescribe supplier details, invoice serial number and date, description, value, rate and tax amount. A passenger-transport ticket may itself be the tax invoice if it contains the other prescribed information; it need not be serially numbered or include the recipient’s address. See CBIC’s Tax Invoice, Credit and Debit Notes rules.

- Open the downloadable invoice. Use the tax invoice rather than relying on the order summary or cart screen. Identify the supplier and the GSTIN printed on that document.
- Verify the GSTIN. On the GST Portal, use the pre-login Search Taxpayer function and enter the GSTIN or UIN. Review the returned taxpayer profile and registration status. The GST Portal user guide explains the lookup.
- Check the product’s rate category. Match the invoice description to the relevant goods classification and CBIC rate entry for the transaction date. The CBIC GST Goods and Services Rates page is the official reference; rates and classifications can change.
- Check the calculation against the taxable value. For each invoice line, compare the stated tax with its taxable value and rate. Take account of any discount or adjustment shown. Do not assume GST is calculated on the full cart total when the invoice separates items, values or tax treatments.
CBIC’s FAQ describes a narrow exception: a registered supplier may omit a tax invoice for a supply below ₹200 to an unregistered recipient if the recipient does not ask for one. If the recipient asks, the invoice must be issued regardless of value. This exception should not be generalized to larger orders or registered business buyers. See CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs.

How to check GST on a cab ride
- Open the completed ride ticket or receipt. Look for the supplier, ride date, fare or taxable value, GST rate and tax amount, along with any separate fee or adjustment lines.
- Check the supplier’s GSTIN if it appears. Use the GST Portal’s pre-login Search Taxpayer tool. If the app receipt does not show a GSTIN, ask the app or supplier for clarification or the appropriate tax document; an incomplete receipt alone does not establish that the ride was billed unlawfully.
- Compare the rate with the right passenger-transport category. There is no single GST percentage that applies to every cab ride. CBIC’s rate table lists specified radio-taxi and motor-vehicle passenger-transport services at 5%, subject to stated input-tax-credit conditions, and a residual passenger-transport category at 18%. The service classification, supplier arrangement and applicable conditions matter. Check the entry for the ride date in the CBIC rate table.
CBIC says a taxi aggregator may issue a ticket or tax invoice within one month after the service. Under the rule described in its FAQ, the provider cannot opt for consolidated invoices. Customers using taxi-aggregator services do not have to file a GST return or make a GST declaration. See CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs.
What a GSTIN lookup can—and cannot—tell you
The GST Portal lookup helps check the identity and displayed registration status of the taxpayer associated with a GSTIN or UIN. It is not a tax calculator, and a matching profile does not establish that the invoice’s tax amount is correct or that the supplier used the right product or service classification. Those checks require the invoice details and the rate entry applicable to the transaction.

What to do if the amount looks wrong
- Keep the evidence. Save the invoice or ticket, order or fare breakdown, GSTIN lookup result and relevant written exchanges.
- Ask the supplier or platform for an explanation. Request the product or service classification, taxable value, rate and calculation. If appropriate, ask for a corrected tax document or credit note.
- Escalate a consumer-service complaint if it remains unresolved. The Department of Consumer Affairs identifies the National Consumer Helpline as a pre-litigation grievance channel. Its official page lists web, WhatsApp, SMS, email and telephone routes, including toll-free 1915; check that page for current contact details and hours: National Consumer Helpline. The Government Services Portal separately lists consumer complaint tracking and e-filing with Consumer Commissions.
The CGST Act prohibits an unregistered person from collecting an amount as tax and requires tax to be indicated in relevant documents. It also provides for credit notes where invoice tax exceeds tax payable, subject to statutory conditions. These provisions do not by themselves decide whether a particular bill is wrong; the invoice and transaction details still need to be assessed. See the CBIC Central Goods and Services Tax Act.

If your problem is with the GST Portal or another GSTN service itself, rather than a seller’s tax charge, GSTN’s Report Issue / Complaint page provides a technical support route and ticket reference. It is not a channel for deciding a seller’s tax liability.
