The reliable way to check an online food-delivery total is to open the order’s itemized bill or tax invoice, separate the food value from delivery and platform charges, and match each GST amount to the service line it taxes. Do not try to reverse-engineer GST from the final amount alone: the taxable base, discount treatment, fee description, restaurant status and invoice details all affect the result.
Labels and layouts differ by app, restaurant, location and order date. The checks below use Indian GST guidance current to October 2026 and are designed to work even when your app calls a fee “handling,” “convenience,” “platform,” “packing” or something else.

What you are checking on the bill
An online food order can combine several supplies in one checkout screen. The food subtotal is normally the restaurant-service portion, while delivery, platform access, packaging and an optional service charge may appear as separate lines. A discount can reduce one line, several lines or the amount collected at checkout, depending on how the invoice records it.

#1 Best Overall
- Get thousands of restaurants, convenience stores, pet stores, grocery stores, gifts, and more at your fingertips.
- Easy ordering, order customizations, and real-time tracking
- Pickup, group order, and scheduled delivery options available
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- the food or restaurant-service value;
- each delivery, platform, packaging, restaurant or other fee;
- every discount, coupon, credit or adjustment;
- the GST amount attached to each taxable line;
- the invoice total and amount actually paid.
If the app only shows a rounded checkout summary, request the itemized tax invoice from the platform or restaurant. A tax invoice is the document to use for checking the description, quantity, value and tax charged.
Official GST categories relevant to food-delivery bills
Indian guidance distinguishes the restaurant service from services supplied by the app or by a delivery provider. The rate shown on one line should not automatically be applied to every other line.
| Bill line or service category | Published guidance | What to verify on your invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant service other than at specified premises | CBIC’s rate schedule lists 2.5% CGST plus 2.5% SGST/UTGST, a 5% combined rate, without input tax credit. The Ministry of Finance confirmed in 2025 that this restaurant-service rate applies whether the service is supplied directly or through an e-commerce operator. | Look for the restaurant-service value, the tax base used, and the tax components shown for that line. Do not extend this rate to delivery or platform lines merely because they appear on the same order. |
| Platform services supplied by a food-delivery app | A Ministry of Finance parliamentary answer in April 2025 stated that other services provided by food-delivery apps, such as platform services, are taxed at 18%. | Identify what the app means by “platform fee” or a similar label and check the taxable amount printed beside it. The label alone does not establish that every app’s fee is the same supply. |
| Local delivery | A Ministry of Finance/Press Information Bureau FAQ dated 16 September 2025 states: “The services of local delivery are taxable at 18%.” It also explains that, in specified cases, the e-commerce operator pays under section 9(5) when the supplier is not liable to register under section 22(1); a registered supplier pays in the other case described there. | Check whether the invoice identifies a local-delivery service, who is shown as the supplier or liable party, and the amount on which tax was calculated. This guidance does not prescribe one universal app label or taxable-base display. |
| Restaurant service charge | CBIC’s FAQ says a restaurant service charge is not a statutory government levy. The same FAQ says GST applies to it as consideration for a supply. | Treat “service charge” as a commercial charge, not as a government tax. Check whether the invoice lists it separately and shows any GST charged on it. |
These are policy rates and liability explanations, not a promise that every customer bill will contain the same lines. A rate can look familiar while the amount is wrong if the taxable base, discount allocation or service description is incorrect.

1. Open the permanent order record
- Open the food-delivery app and go to Orders, Order history or the equivalent account page.
- Select the completed order, not just the live tracking screen.
- Open Bill, View details, Tax details, Invoice or a similarly named control. Apps can change these labels.
- Save the downloadable invoice or take a screenshot showing the order number, date, seller details, line items and totals.
Keep the invoice separately from the payment notification. A bank or wallet receipt usually proves payment but may not show the taxable base or tax split.
2. Record the food value before fees
Write down each dish, quantity and price, then record the restaurant-service subtotal exactly as the invoice presents it. If the app shows a menu subtotal and a separate restaurant discount, keep both figures; do not silently replace the invoice value with the amount you expected from the menu.
3. List every non-food line
Copy the wording and amount of delivery, platform, convenience, handling, packaging, restaurant, small-order, surge, membership or other charges. Similar-looking labels can describe different supplies. Preserve the original wording because it is what the platform or restaurant must clarify if the bill is disputed.

4. Record discounts and credits in their own column
Capture restaurant coupons, app promotions, membership benefits, wallet credits, refunds and rounding adjustments separately. A discount may be shown before tax, after tax, against one service or across several services. The invoice—not an assumption about how promotions normally work—determines the amount being taxed.
5. Find each GST line
Look for “GST,” “CGST,” “SGST,” “UTGST,” “tax,” or a tax summary. Some invoices attach tax directly below a fee; others provide a consolidated table with a taxable value and tax amount. Link every tax figure to the service line or tax base printed next to it.
6. Compare the service category with the guidance
Use the category table above as a classification check. Restaurant service, platform service and local delivery are not interchangeable descriptions. If the invoice gives only a generic “tax” label, ask the issuer which supply it represents and what taxable value was used.
7. Reconcile the arithmetic
Add the invoice’s taxable line values, add or subtract the listed adjustments in the order shown, and compare the result with the stated total. Then compare the stated total with the amount charged to your payment method. A small difference can result from rounding, but the issuer should be able to explain any larger discrepancy.
8. Preserve evidence before contacting support
Save the invoice PDF, a checkout screenshot if available, the payment receipt, order number, restaurant name and delivery date. Fee labels or promotional terms may disappear after the order closes, so contemporaneous records make a clarification request specific.
How to read the itemized tax invoice
Description, quantity and value
The invoice should identify what was supplied, how much was supplied and its value. For food, that normally means dish descriptions and quantities; for a service fee, it should identify the service or use a description that the issuer can explain. A single unexplained “miscellaneous” amount is a reason to request clarification.

Tax charged and prescribed particulars
The cited CGST Act requirement covers the description, quantity and value of goods, the tax charged and other prescribed particulars. Check the seller or supplier name, invoice number, date, order reference and the tax details shown on the document. An app’s abbreviated checkout card may omit information that appears on the downloadable invoice.
Taxable value versus amount paid
These are not always identical. The taxable value is the amount to which a tax rate is applied; the amount paid is the final collection after taxes, fees, discounts, credits and adjustments. Use the invoice’s taxable-value column when testing the calculation, rather than multiplying the final payment by a rate.
Separate tax components
Where the invoice displays separate CGST and SGST/UTGST components, add those components for the line and compare their combined amount with the stated GST total. Do not assume that a tax shown beside the order total applies equally to food, delivery and platform lines unless the invoice says so.
Why a delivery total can differ from the menu subtotal
A higher total is not, by itself, evidence of an incorrect tax charge. Common legitimate causes include:
- a delivery service added after the restaurant subtotal;
- a platform or convenience fee for arranging the order;
- packaging or restaurant charges listed separately;
- a service charge that is commercial rather than a government levy;
- GST calculated on one or more of those additional supplies;
- a discount that applies only to food, only to delivery or only after a threshold;
- minimum-order, small-order or location-based adjustments;
- rounding differences between line calculations and the displayed grand total.
The correct question is “Which supply does this line represent, what is its taxable value and what tax is shown?” rather than “Why is the app charging tax on the whole order?”
Checking each common fee without guessing
Delivery charge
Copy the exact delivery description and inspect the tax line attached to it. The September 2025 official FAQ specifically addresses local-delivery services and their 18% treatment, including who may be liable in the circumstances described. If your invoice uses a different description, ask whether it is the same local-delivery service or another charge.

Platform or convenience fee
Platform services were identified by the Ministry of Finance as an 18% category in its 2025 parliamentary answer. That does not mean every amount called “platform fee,” “convenience fee” or “handling fee” is automatically identical. Request the supplier’s description and taxable base when the invoice does not make the connection clear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPackaging or restaurant charge
Packaging may be shown as part of the restaurant’s charge or as its own line. Do not assign a rate from the word “packaging” alone. Check whether the invoice treats it as part of the restaurant supply, a separate supply or an adjustment, and use the tax amount printed for that line.
Service charge
A service charge is not a statutory government levy according to CBIC. It can still be consideration for a supply on which GST is applied. The distinction matters: removing a government tax and disputing a voluntary or commercial charge are different requests. Ask the restaurant or platform to explain the charge and its tax treatment rather than calling the entire amount “GST.”
A practical worksheet for your own order
Make a four-column note while viewing the invoice:
| Invoice wording | Amount shown | Tax base or GST shown | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food or restaurant-service lines | Copy the invoice subtotal | Copy the taxable value and tax components | Does the description, quantity and value match the order? |
| Delivery | Copy the exact delivery fee | Copy the tax attached to that line | Is it identified as local delivery, and who is shown as supplier or liable party? |
| Platform or convenience line | Copy the fee without renaming it | Copy its stated taxable value and tax | What service does the issuer say this label represents? |
| Packaging, restaurant or other charge | Record each line separately | Record any GST beside each line | Is it part of restaurant service or a separate supply? |
| Discounts and credits | Record each adjustment | Note whether the invoice applies it before or after tax | Which line or service receives the reduction? |
| Grand total and payment | Copy both amounts | Compare invoice total with payment receipt | Is any difference explained by refund, credit or rounding? |
This worksheet deliberately does not impose one calculation on every order. The invoice’s service descriptions and taxable values control the reconciliation.

The app shows only a checkout summary
Use the order-help or customer-support option and request the complete itemized tax invoice. State the order number and ask for the supplier name, service description, taxable value and tax charged for each non-food line. A response that only repeats the grand total does not answer the calculation question.
Recommended Free Tools
The tax rate seems inconsistent with the service label
Ask the issuer to identify the precise supply and the notification, schedule entry or official guidance it used. Do not accuse the restaurant or app solely because a familiar rate appears on an unfamiliar fee; first establish what the fee represents.
Best Value
- Get thousands of restaurants, convenience stores, pet stores, grocery stores, gifts, and more at your fingertips.
- Easy ordering, order customizations, and real-time tracking
- Pickup, group order, and scheduled delivery options available
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
The invoice and payment amount differ
Check for a later refund, partial cancellation, wallet credit, tip, failed-payment retry or post-order adjustment. Match the transaction date and reference number. If no adjustment explains the difference, request a corrected invoice or a written reconciliation.
A service charge is described as tax
Point out that CBIC distinguishes a restaurant service charge from a statutory government levy. Ask the issuer to separate the commercial charge from GST and identify the consideration on which GST was calculated.
The restaurant and app give different answers
Send both parties the same invoice page and ask which entity issued each line. Platform checkout screens may combine supplies from different parties, while the restaurant may see only its own restaurant-service portion. Keep written replies with the invoice.

Records to keep for refunds and later disputes
Retain the invoice, payment confirmation, order number, cancellation or refund notice, promotional terms and support conversation. Note the date you requested clarification and the exact line in dispute. If a refund is issued, compare the refund amount with the affected taxable line and tax rather than assuming the entire order was reversed.
Tax rules, notifications, app labels and invoice layouts can change. The rates and liability explanations above reflect CBIC and Ministry of Finance/PIB material accessed on 13 October 2026; check for a later notification when reviewing an older order or preparing a formal tax complaint.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Multiplying the grand total by one rate: the order can contain several supplies with different treatment.
- Calling every extra amount GST: delivery, platform, packaging and service charges are not themselves government tax labels.
- Using a menu screenshot as the invoice: the tax invoice records the taxable value and tax charged.
- Assuming every platform uses the same base: fee wording, discounts and supplier arrangements vary.
- Ignoring the date: later FAQs or notifications can change the applicable explanation.
- Discarding the original bill after a refund: the original and adjusted records are needed to reconcile the final payment.
Five-minute final checklist
- Open the completed order and download the invoice.
- Copy the restaurant-service value and every additional fee exactly as labelled.
- Record discounts, credits, refunds and rounding separately.
- Match each GST amount to its service line and taxable value.
- Compare the category with the official restaurant, platform and local-delivery guidance.
- Reconcile the invoice total with the payment receipt.
- Ask for an itemized explanation when a label, base or tax amount is missing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check GST from the final amount if the app does not provide an invoice?
No. The final amount combines food, fees, discounts and tax. Request the itemized tax invoice or a written breakdown showing each service, taxable value and tax charged.
Is a restaurant service charge the same as GST?
No. CBIC describes service charge as a commercial charge rather than a statutory government levy, although GST can apply to it as consideration for a supply.
Why might the restaurant and delivery app show different totals?
They may be showing different portions of a combined order. Compare the same invoice number and ask which entity issued each food, delivery or platform line.
What should I do if a later refund changes the amount paid?
Keep the original invoice and refund record, then reconcile the refunded line, its tax and the final payment. Ask support for an adjusted invoice if the records do not match.
