Record the new game build, read the mod’s current version notes, remove duplicate or old PAK files, then test the game clean before enabling one mod at a time. This process separates a broken mod from a conflicting mod and from a problem in the unmodified game.
What “compatible” means after an E-Day update
A mod is compatible only when its files work with the exact E-Day build installed on your PC and with the other files you are loading. A mod can appear in the correct folder and still be incompatible: the game may crash during startup, load a map with missing textures, show visual artifacts, or run with worse frame pacing.

E-Day launched on October 6, 2026, and is rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. Patches can change packaged assets, configuration names, rendering behavior, or the way a particular map or mode is loaded. A PAK that worked on the launch build therefore needs to be checked against the mod author’s current release notes after every game update. There is no universal official guarantee that every mod remains compatible with every patch.

- Start once with no mod files present and establish a clean baseline.
- Enable one current mod revision.
- Compare startup, crashes, textures, visual effects and frame pacing with the clean run.
- If the mod causes a new symptom, remove that PAK and retest before changing anything else.
Check the game build and the mod release before launching
Record the installed E-Day build
Write down the build or version shown by your storefront or in the game’s title screen after the update finishes. Also note the date of the patch. This gives you a precise reference when a mod page says it was updated for a particular game version, or when the author warns that a release is still being revised.

Do not rely on the phrase “latest patch” in an old download description. A mod page can contain several archived files, and a filename that looks newer is not necessarily the revision intended for your installed build.
Read the mod page’s current notes
Before copying anything, check the mod’s current file listing, changelog and update-specific warnings. Look for statements about supported game builds, known crashes, map or game-mode limitations, and whether the author has replaced an older package.
The AXIS E-DAY OPTIMIZED page, for example, says that performance may vary with hardware, game mode, map and game updates. It also warns that a configuration that works in another Unreal Engine game cannot automatically be assumed to work the same way in E-Day. Treat those statements as compatibility conditions, not as optional disclaimers.

Confirm the release type
Current AXIS instructions use a PAK release. The page says its older Engine.ini workflow is not the method for the current PAK release. Do not combine an old Engine.ini package with the newer PAK unless the author explicitly instructs you to do so. Mixing instructions from different revisions makes it impossible to tell which change caused a failure.
Understand the platform requirements before blaming a mod
E-Day is available on Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11. On PC, it is distributed through the Microsoft Store and Steam and is included with Game Pass. These storefronts install the game in different places, so the path you use for a mod depends on where you installed it.

Steam’s listed requirements are requirements for the base game. Steam lists DirectX 12, a hardware-ray-tracing-capable GPU, 115 GB of storage and an SSD. Steam also notes that additional storage may be required for future updates. Meeting those requirements does not prove that a particular mod is compatible; it only establishes that the unmodified game has the stated hardware and storage baseline.

If the clean game fails to launch or shows the same severe performance problem with every mod removed, resolve the base-game or hardware issue first. Installing a different PAK will not fix a system that does not meet the base requirements.

Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Find Gears of War: E-Day.
- Open the game’s management menu and choose Manage → Browse local files.
- From the folder that opens, navigate to
FairlightConceptContentPaks~mods.
If ~mods is missing, create a folder named exactly ~mods inside Paks. Keep the tilde and use the spelling shown above. A folder with a different name will not be the target described by the AXIS instructions.
Xbox App or Microsoft Store
Open the actual XboxGames installation directory for E-Day, then follow the same internal path: FairlightConceptContentPaks~mods. The Xbox App and Microsoft Store can place games in a different library location from Steam, so do not paste a Steam path into Windows Explorer and assume it applies to the Xbox installation. Use the storefront’s installed-files or manage-storage option to open the directory that belongs to your copy.
Windows permissions or a protected library can prevent direct browsing or editing. If you cannot reach the installed folder, use the Xbox App’s location controls rather than creating a second, guessed copy of the directory elsewhere. A PAK in the wrong installation will have no effect and can make diagnosis confusing.

Install or reinstall a PAK safely
Close E-Day completely before installing, updating or removing a mod. Do not replace a PAK while the game is running or while the launcher is still updating files.
- Save the clean state. Move existing mod PAKs out of
FairlightConceptContentPaks~modsto a temporary backup folder. Do not delete them until you know you no longer need to restore a prior setup. - Remove duplicates. Keep only the revision you intend to test. For AXIS, the author says to run one AXIS version at a time and to avoid overlapping optimization packages.
- Download the current archive. Use the mod page’s current file and read its changelog or warning before extracting it.
- Extract the archive. Copy the supplied
.pakfile, not the ZIP or another compressed archive, intoFairlightConceptContentPaks~mods. - Preserve the supplied filename. Rename the file only when the release notes specifically require it. Changing names can defeat instructions that depend on load order or a particular package name.
- Check for accidental nesting. The PAK should be directly inside
~mods, not inside another folder created during extraction. - Launch with one change. Do not add a second mod, an old Engine.ini tweak or another optimization package during this first test.
- Record the result. Note whether the game reaches the menu, loads the test area, displays textures correctly and maintains normal frame pacing.
Use a clean baseline and one-mod isolation
Run the clean baseline
With every mod PAK moved out of the target folder, start E-Day once. Use the same map, mode and graphics settings you will use for the mod test. A clean run that reaches the menu and loads the intended content gives you a comparison point for the next launch.
If the unmodded game crashes, has missing textures or shows the same frame-pacing problem, stop the mod investigation. The update or the base installation may be responsible, and adding a PAK would only add another variable.
Enable one current revision
Close the game, place one current PAK in ~mods, and launch again. Repeat the same action or route used for the clean baseline. Test long enough to reach the content that previously exposed the problem; a menu-only launch does not prove that a map-specific asset is compatible.
Compare observable symptoms

Re-enable several mods without losing the cause
Once one PAK passes your test, close the game and add only one additional mod. Launch and compare again. Continue in this sequence so the last change is always known.

- Keep a written list of the exact filenames and revisions you have tested.
- Do not keep two revisions of the same mod in
~mods, even if their names differ slightly. - Do not test multiple optimization packages together while diagnosing a patch-related problem.
- When a failure returns, remove the most recently added PAK and confirm that the previous known-good combination still launches.
This approach distinguishes three common cases: a single outdated mod, a conflict between otherwise working mods, and a failure that exists even in the clean game.

The AXIS E-DAY OPTIMIZED release is a useful example of why version discipline matters. Its author instructs users to run only one AXIS version at a time and to avoid overlapping optimization packages. Follow that rule literally during troubleshooting: remove older AXIS revisions and any package that changes the same performance or rendering settings before testing the current file.
Use the current PAK instructions rather than an older Engine.ini guide. The older workflow is not the method for the current PAK release. If you have previously edited Engine.ini for an earlier version, restore a known-clean configuration before judging the PAK; otherwise you are testing two different change sets at once.
The author’s warning that performance varies by hardware, game mode, map and game updates means that one successful menu launch is not enough to promise a performance improvement. Test the mode and map where you actually play, and compare frame pacing with the clean baseline.
Steam and Xbox App paths are different

The internal target is the same in the cited AXIS instructions, but the starting location is not. If a mod appears to do nothing on one storefront, first verify that you copied the PAK into that storefront’s installed copy rather than into another library or a leftover Steam directory.
How to tell whether the update, the mod or a conflict is responsible
The clean game works, but one current mod fails
This points toward mod compatibility, an outdated release, or a package-specific conflict. Remove the PAK, check the author’s latest notes, and wait for or install a revision that explicitly addresses the new build. Do not keep trying renamed copies of the same old file.
The clean game works, but several mods fail together
Return to one-mod isolation. If each PAK works alone but the combination fails, the problem is a conflict or overlapping change rather than proof that every mod was broken by the update. Keep the combination that remains stable and add other files one at a time.
The clean game fails too
Because the failure exists without any PAK, focus on the base installation and the platform’s requirements. Check that the PC still has the required SSD space, DirectX 12 environment and hardware-ray-tracing-capable GPU listed for the base game. Steam’s note that future updates may require additional storage is relevant when a patch has just downloaded.

The mod page has no build-specific information
Absence of an update note is not confirmation of compatibility. Keep the clean baseline, test the PAK in isolation and treat the result as provisional. Recheck the page before the next game launch if another patch has arrived.
A practical post-update checklist
- Record the installed E-Day build and patch date.
- Read the mod’s current file page, changelog and warnings.
- Confirm whether the release is a PAK or an older Engine.ini package.
- Close E-Day before touching any files.
- Move old and duplicate PAKs out of
FairlightConceptContentPaks~mods. - Open the real Steam or Xbox App/Microsoft Store installation directory.
- Create
~modsinsidePaksif needed. - Copy the extracted
.pak, not the ZIP, and keep its supplied filename. - Launch once with no mod, then test one current mod.
- Compare crashes, map loading, textures, visual artifacts and frame pacing.
- Add further mods one at a time and remove the last change when a failure returns.
Bottom line
After each E-Day update, compatibility is something you verify, not something you infer from the fact that a PAK worked before. Match the mod revision to the recorded game build, use the correct storefront directory, keep only one revision under test, and compare a clean launch with one-mod runs. Steam’s hardware requirements establish a base-game floor; they cannot certify a mod. If the clean game works and the isolated PAK does not, remove it and wait for a release that addresses the updated build.
