How to Check FortiMail for Signs of CVE-2026-104286 Exploitation

Check each FortiMail appliance’s exact software version and whether Identity Based Encryption (IBE) is enabled, then compare its files and logs with the complete, current indicators in Fortinet advisory FG-IR-26-175. Fortinet has reportedly confirmed active exploitation. Updating or mitigating the flaw does not tell you whether an attacker used it earlier, so investigate possible compromise as well.

What CVE-2026-104286 does

NVD describes CVE-2026-104286 as an unauthenticated path-traversal vulnerability that could let an attacker write arbitrary files to the underlying system through crafted HTTP or HTTPS requests. NCSC-NL also describes a null-byte neutralization weakness and says the listed releases are affected when IBE is enabled. NVD records Fortinet’s CNA CVSS v3.1 severity as 9.8 Critical.

Fortinet reportedly confirmed exploitation in the wild. NVD’s rendering of CISA catalog data shows that CISA added the vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on October 1, 2026, with an October 4, 2026 due date.

Determine whether an appliance is in scope

Do not judge exposure from the product name alone. Record the exact release and IBE state for every appliance. NVD lists the affected release ranges below; NCSC-NL says IBE must be enabled for the listed releases to be affected.

FortiMail branch Affected versions listed by NVD Upgrade guidance reported by the Canadian Cyber Centre
8.0 8.0.0–8.0.1 8.0.2
7.6 7.6.0–7.6.6 7.6.7
7.4 7.4.0–7.4.8 7.4.9
7.2 7.2.0–7.2.9 Upgrade to branch 7.4 or above

The upgrade versions in the table are thresholds reported by the Canadian Cyber Centre, not a guarantee that a particular release is available or appropriate for every deployment. Confirm the current affected and fixed versions, supported upgrade path, and release availability in Fortinet’s advisory before changing a production appliance. If IBE is disabled, that changes the reported vulnerability exposure condition; it does not establish whether an appliance was previously compromised.

Check for indicators and preserve evidence

  1. Get Fortinet’s current indicator list. Retrieve FG-IR-26-175 directly from Fortinet. Use the complete, current file, hash, network, and behavioral indicators in that advisory; CERT-FR and NCSC-NL also confirm that Fortinet published indicators of compromise.
  2. Review relevant files and logs. Compare the appliance with the advisory’s indicators and check for unexplained file changes or activity. Use the advisory to identify which artifacts and time periods matter; do not assume that a single log or file check covers every form of exploitation.
  3. Use secondary indicators only as leads. Telkom CSIRT reproduces the behavioral strings archive234 and /migadmin, along with suspected source IPs 79.141.169.187 and 45.129.0.192. Treat these as examples from a secondary reproduction, not a complete or authoritative list. Beazley Security reproduces paths for /data/bin/mailservice and /data/bin/webconsole; obtain exact hashes from Fortinet’s current advisory before using hash matches operationally.
  4. Preserve evidence and investigate matches. Keep relevant logs and files available for incident review, and investigate any indicator match or unexplained change. Government guidance calls for investigating possible compromise in addition to applying security updates.

A match is a reason to investigate, not by itself a complete account of what happened. Conversely, no match against one indicator—or against a partial list—does not prove that no compromise occurred.

Mitigate and update without losing sight of prior activity

Apply the current Fortinet workaround or fixed release appropriate to the appliance, following the vendor’s instructions and supported upgrade path. Telkom CSIRT reproduces workaround guidance to restrict management access to trusted or private networks and disable IBE. Verify the exact configuration steps and operational impact with Fortinet before making changes; disabling IBE may affect services that rely on it.

Mitigation reduces ongoing exposure; it is not a substitute for checking for earlier attacker activity. If you find indicators or cannot confidently assess the appliance, involve your organization’s incident-response team or a qualified forensic responder.
