An unfamiliar AT&T account can also surface through a collection notice or a credit report. If you did not authorize an order, charge, or account change, report it to the AT&T fraud channel for your service and secure the account immediately. A surprise charge is not automatically fraud: AT&T says billing errors, missed promotions, a normal store visit, or a plan change can produce an unexpected amount and should be handled through account or billing support.
How do I check for unauthorized activity on my AT&T account?
Work through the account itself, not just the payment history. Someone who gains access may change a recovery email, add an authorized user, order equipment, move a phone number, or add a line without leaving an obvious unfamiliar payment at first.

- Open AT&T through a trusted route. Type the known AT&T web address yourself or use the official app already installed on your device. Do not use a sign-in link from an unexpected email or text. If you suspect that your phone number or email has been taken over, use a device and connection you still control.
- Review the current bill and recent activity. Check the total, individual charges, taxes and fees, one-time charges, equipment installments, add-ons, and changes to recurring services. Note the billing period and whether a promotion or credit that you expected is missing.
- Check orders and service changes. Look for orders you did not place, new wireless lines, replacement devices, upgrades, number changes or transfers, internet or phone service changes, and accessories or add-ons. Compare shipping addresses and pickup details with your records.
- Inspect profile and billing information. Confirm the name, service address, billing address, email address, telephone numbers, payment details, and notification preferences. An address or shipping change that you did not make is a significant warning sign.
- Review who can use the account. Check secondary online users and retail-authorized users. Remove or correct anyone who should no longer manage the account, and investigate an unfamiliar user before making other changes.
- Check passwords and passcodes. Review the account password, account passcode, and any extra-security passcode. AT&T describes the account passcode as information used during store visits or calls, while an extra-security passcode is used for online wireless sign-in.
- Record what you find. Save the bill date, order number, charge description, line or device involved, notices received, and screenshots of unfamiliar changes. Keep the records in a location that an intruder cannot edit.
AT&T specifically advises reviewing passwords, passcodes, contact details, and user access as part of protecting an account. A clean payment history does not prove that the account is safe; profile and service changes can precede a charge.

Unexpected charge or unauthorized change: use the right test
Start by asking whether you approved the underlying event, not merely whether the amount looks unfamiliar. AT&T says a surprise charge can result from a billing issue, a missed promotion, a regular store visit, or a plan change. Those situations belong with account or billing support, where the representative can explain the charge and correct an ordinary error.

Treat an event as suspected fraud when you did not approve the order, charge, line, device, add-on, user, contact-detail change, or other account action. A person may have used stolen credentials, a social-engineering call, or a compromised recovery method. Report the unapproved event through AT&T Global Fraud Management for the service involved, even if the charge has not posted yet.
- Likely billing or service dispute: You recognize the store visit, plan change, device, or service but the price, promotion, or credit is wrong.
- Suspected unauthorized activity: You did not place or approve the order or account change, the shipping or contact information is unfamiliar, or another person appears to control the account.
- Both can apply: A fraudulent change may also create a billing error. Report the unauthorized event first, then ask billing support to explain any remaining legitimate balance.
How do I report an AT&T account change I didn’t authorize?
Use the channel that matches the AT&T service. Contact details can change, so confirm the current number or reporting page on AT&T’s support site when you file a claim.
| Service or situation | What to do | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T Wireless | Use AT&T’s Wireless Fraud reporting channel or call 877-844-5584 to file a fraud claim. | Use this route for an unapproved wireless order, line, device, number change, SIM/eSIM event, or related account change. |
| AT&T Internet or phone | Call 877-379-2319 or use AT&T’s Voice and Internet Fraud channel. | This is separate from the wireless fraud route. |
| Phone number appears illegally transferred | Contact AT&T as soon as possible. | A transfer can prevent you from receiving calls, texts, and sign-in codes, so do not wait for the next bill. |
| Recognized service, wrong amount | Start with AT&T account or billing support and explain the charge, missed promotion, add-on, or plan change. | Do not label an ordinary billing correction as identity fraud unless you also find an event you did not approve. |
When reporting, describe the first unapproved event and its date, identify the affected line or service, and provide the order or bill reference. Tell the representative whether you still control the sign-in email, phone number, and account passcode. If an attacker changed those details, say so immediately so the case is handled as an access problem rather than only a billing question.

- Read the company name, service type, dates, and amount on a collection notice. Do not assume that a familiar name means you opened the account.
- Compare an unfamiliar account on your credit report with your own AT&T records and addresses.
- Contact AT&T through its current fraud channel and explain that the account is not yours. Keep the notice or report entry with your case records.
A credit report discovery concerns identity misuse and is different from an unfamiliar charge on an account you already control. It does not by itself show that your current AT&T login was breached, so review and secure the existing account as well.
Secure the account after a suspicious sign-in or change
Report the unauthorized event and lock down access promptly. If you can still sign in, make the changes from a trusted device and avoid reusing a password from another service.
- Change a potentially compromised password. Use a new, unique password that is not an easy-to-guess name, date, address, or reused credential. If you used the old password elsewhere, change it there too.
- Change an easy-to-guess ID. AT&T recommends changing an account ID that could be guessed. Choose an identifier that does not expose obvious personal information.
- Replace the account passcode. A person who knows it may be able to authorize store visits or calls. Do not reuse a code that was disclosed during a suspicious interaction.
- Review the extra-security passcode. This code protects online wireless sign-in. Change it if it may have been exposed.
- Verify recovery channels. Confirm that the recovery email address and phone numbers belong to you. Remove unfamiliar destinations and correct any address or number an intruder added.
- Audit online and retail users. Review secondary online users and retail-authorized users. Remove access that is unknown, no longer needed, or broader than intended.
- Check the account again. After changing credentials, recheck orders, lines, devices, billing details, and contact information for changes made before you regained control.
AT&T warns that it will not ask you to read back a passcode or PIN used to sign in as you. Never give a verification code to an unexpected caller or texter, and avoid links in unexpected messages. If you already shared information, change the password and account or security passcode, then review who can authorize changes.
Warning signs of account takeover or SIM/eSIM takeover
AT&T describes account takeover as someone using a stolen password or a fake sign-in page to enter an account, change settings, place orders, or update contact information. A SIM or eSIM takeover can move your phone number to another device, allowing the attacker to receive calls, texts, and sign-in codes.

- You receive password-reset or account-change emails that you did not request.
- Your address, email, phone number, or shipping information changes without your approval.
- A device, line, order, add-on, or authorized user appears that you do not recognize.
These signs are reasons to check promptly, not proof on their own. For example, a legitimate device replacement or carrier change can produce a SIM/eSIM message. Confirm the event in the account and report it if you did not initiate it. If your number appears to have been transferred, contact AT&T immediately because a working email password may not protect accounts that use text messages for verification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use Wireless Account Lock
Wireless Account Lock is a free feature in the AT&T app for AT&T Wireless service. When enabled, it can block specified wireless device, line, and account transactions while you investigate or simply add a preventive barrier. It is a containment setting, not an audit log and not a substitute for a fraud report.
Turn Wireless Account Lock on
- Open the AT&T app on an active wireless device.
- Select the person icon.
- Choose Wireless account lock.
- Swipe to lock the account.
AT&T sends a confirmation email and texts to active wireless numbers. Primary and secondary users can turn the feature on or off. To turn it off, open the same control and tap Unlock the account.
Transactions the lock can block
- SIM or eSIM changes
- Number changes or transfers
- Adding or removing wireless lines
- Changes to authorized users
- Changes to billing information
What Wireless Account Lock does not cover
The lock applies to wireless devices and lines. It does not protect non-wireless AT&T services such as internet or phone service, and it does not investigate a charge or determine who made a change. Standalone data-only tablets, hotspots, and Wireless Home Phones may require help from AT&T or a store rather than the app control.

If options are grayed out while the lock is enabled, AT&T says the feature may be blocking those changes. Unlock only when you understand the requested transaction and have verified who is making it.
What to do when you cannot sign in
An inability to sign in can have an innocent cause, such as a forgotten password, but it can also mean that someone changed the credentials. Do not keep trying links from messages that claim your account is locked.
- Use the known AT&T app or type the official AT&T address yourself.
- Try the normal credential-recovery process from that trusted route.
- If the recovery email or phone number is no longer yours, or recovery messages were not requested, contact the appropriate AT&T fraud channel rather than treating the issue as an ordinary password reset.
- From another account or device you still control, monitor for password-reset notices, shipping messages, collection notices, and loss of mobile service.
Do not disclose a one-time verification code to a caller who says it is needed to “restore” the account. AT&T’s stated practice is not to ask you to read back a passcode or PIN used to sign in as you.

Fraud and billing teams may need a precise timeline. Write down when you first noticed the problem, the last time the account looked normal, each unfamiliar order or setting, and every contact with AT&T. Save confirmation numbers and copies of messages, but remove passwords and full payment details from notes you share.
Best Value
Continue checking the account and your bills for changes you did not authorize. If you discover a second unapproved event, add it to the existing case and explain whether it happened before or after the password, passcodes, or Wireless Account Lock were changed.
Limits and account-type differences
The instructions above describe consumer AT&T services. Business accounts can have different screens, permissions, users, and support contacts, so do not assume that a business administrator will see the same controls. App labels and fraud contact details can also change; verify the current AT&T support information at the time you act.
No special hardware is required to perform this check. The practical tools are the AT&T app or website, current bills, account and credit-report records, and the appropriate fraud support channel. A monitoring service may alert you to a new account on a credit report, but it does not secure an AT&T login or replace reporting an unauthorized change.
