On your Chromecast with Google TV, open All settings > System > About > System update. That screen checks for, downloads, and installs the latest system software. Updates normally download automatically, but Google TV gives you this manual check when you want to confirm status. Google Home is used to inspect the installed firmware version; it is not the update control for Chromecast with Google TV.
What the update process does
A Chromecast with Google TV runs system software that controls the home screen, streaming apps, casting, networking, security components, and device hardware. Google normally downloads system updates automatically, including the update applied during initial setup. The manual System update screen is useful when you want to check immediately, when a notification is not obvious, or when you are diagnosing a feature that may have been fixed in a newer release.

Updating is a device-level operation rather than an app update. Individual apps can update through Google Play, but the procedure below changes the Chromecast system firmware. While installation is running, the streaming device cannot accept casts. Google states that a typical update takes 10–12 minutes; the support instructions do not specify a publication year for that duration. Do not treat the television’s normal app behavior during this period as evidence that the update failed.
Before you start
A few checks reduce the chance of an interrupted installation:

- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Leave the Chromecast connected to its normal power adapter and a reliable power outlet. Do not power it from a television USB port that may turn off when the TV sleeps.
- Make sure the HDMI input is selected and the Google TV interface is visible so you can read the status messages.
- Keep the device connected to the internet. The Chromecast needs a network connection to obtain the update package.
- Plan for a period when nobody needs to cast. Google says the device is unavailable for casting during the update.
- If you are about to leave home, start the check only when you can leave the device powered until the process finishes.
You do not need to buy an accessory to install a system update. Google’s instructions do not specify a required cable, remote, subscription, or other add-on for existing owners.
How to check for and install an update on Chromecast with Google TV
1. Open All settings
- From the Google TV home screen, move to your profile icon or the settings control in the upper-right area.
- Select All settings. The exact appearance can vary slightly with the current Google TV interface, but the destination is the full settings panel rather than an individual app’s settings.
2. Open the system information page
- In Settings, choose System.
- Choose About. This page contains information about the Chromecast model, software, storage, and related device details.
3. Run the update check
- Select System update.
- Read the status shown on screen. If Google TV reports that an update is available, follow the prompts to download and install it. If it says the device is up to date, no manual installation is required at that moment.
- Allow the Chromecast to complete every restart or progress message before you try to cast again. Interrupting power during an installation can leave the device in a recovery or setup state.
Google’s menu path is therefore All settings > System > About > System update. The update control does not appear in Google Home for Chromecast with Google TV, so searching the Home app for an “update” button will not start the installation.
What you will see while the update runs
The device may download files, verify them, restart, and apply the software in more than one stage. Google says the typical total time is 10–12 minutes, but network speed, the size of a release, and the restart sequence can affect how long the individual screens remain visible. During this interval:
- The Chromecast is unavailable to cast, matching Google’s statement that “During the update, the Google streaming device isn’t available to cast.”
- The device LED pulses while it receives the update.
- The update status can be checked from the Google TV home screen when that screen is available.
- Streaming apps and the Google TV interface may not respond until the process and any automatic reboot are complete.
Keep the remote pointed at the TV only if you need to read a prompt; repeatedly pressing buttons does not accelerate the download or installation. If the screen appears unchanged for a short period within the expected window, leave the power and network connections intact rather than forcing a restart.

How to verify the installed firmware version
Google Home can show which firmware is installed, but it does not replace the television’s update menu. Use it after an update, or when you need to record the exact version for support.
- Open the Google Home app on the phone or tablet that is linked to the Chromecast.
- Select the Chromecast with Google TV device tile.
- Open Settings, then Device information.
- Under Technical information, find System firmware version.
Write down the complete value, including letters, numbers, periods, and leading zeros. A partial value can make a support conversation or a comparison with Google’s release notes ambiguous. This screen reports the installed version; it does not download or apply a newer one.
Understanding Google’s listed production build
Google’s firmware reference, last updated June 23, 2026, lists build UTTC.250917.004 for both Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV (HD). The notes for that listing identify an October 2025 Android security patch level and describe additional bug fixes and performance improvements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat listing is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that every Chromecast has that build today. Google releases production firmware in stages and updates the listed production versions once a release is available for all devices. A Chromecast can therefore show an older version for a period even after a newer build has been published. A mismatch alone is not proof that the device is defective or that the update mechanism is broken.

| Item | Google’s listed detail | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Model coverage | Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV (HD) | Compare the entry for your model, not a different Chromecast generation. |
| Production build | UTTC.250917.004 | Compare it with the complete value shown under Google Home > Settings > Device information > Technical information. |
| Security patch noted | October 2025 | Use the patch level as part of the release description, not as a promise that it is the newest patch available after the page’s June 23, 2026 update. |
| Rollout behavior | Staged production release | Allow for rollout timing before treating an older installed version as a fault. |
For the newest build and its release notes, consult Google’s current firmware reference at the time you check. The model-specific entry and the staged-rollout qualification matter more than a version number copied from an older article or forum post.
If the update appears stuck
Use the following order. It starts with checks that preserve your data and ends with the destructive step Google recommends when the earlier measures do not resolve the problem.
Check whether it is actually outside the expected window
Compare the elapsed time with Google’s typical 10–12 minutes. A brief pause, a restart, or a screen that takes time to redraw can occur within that period. Keep the device connected while you wait. If it has taken substantially longer than expected, continue with the power and connectivity checks below rather than repeatedly selecting update.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confirm power is stable
- Check that the Chromecast’s power cable is firmly seated at the device and at the adapter.
- Use the supplied or normal power adapter and a working outlet.
- Avoid disconnecting the adapter simply because the television screen is temporarily blank; first look for the pulsing LED or a status change.
Intermittent power can stop a download or interrupt a reboot. Correct the connection before attempting another recovery step.

Confirm network connectivity
The update must reach Google’s servers. Check whether other devices on the same network have internet access. If the Chromecast has lost Wi-Fi, restore the network connection through Google TV’s network settings when the interface is responsive, then return to All settings > System > About > System update. Do not assume that a published firmware build will install while the device is offline.
Power-cycle the Chromecast
If the update remains far beyond the expected time after power and network checks, Google recommends restarting the update by power-cycling the device:
- Unplug the streaming device from its power source, not merely from the television’s HDMI socket.
- Wait one full minute.
- Plug it back into power.
- Allow it to boot and resume the update automatically.
This restart does not mean the update has been completed; wait for the status to finish before casting. If the device returns to Google TV normally, you can check System update again and later verify the firmware version in Google Home.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Factory-reset only as the final listed recovery step
If the problem persists after checking connectivity, confirming power, and performing the one-minute power cycle, Google’s next recommendation is to factory reset the device and set it up again. A factory reset erases the Chromecast’s installed configuration, accounts, app state, Wi-Fi details, and other personal settings. It is not a routine way to install an update.

“I cannot find System update in Google Home”
That is expected for Chromecast with Google TV. Open the television interface and use All settings > System > About > System update. Google Home’s device-information page is for viewing the firmware version, not for initiating the update.
“The device says it is up to date, but Google lists a newer build”
Check the model and the date of Google’s firmware page, then allow for staged rollout timing. A listed production version may not have reached every device at the same time. Compare the complete installed version in Google Home and retry the TV’s manual check later if your device remains on an older build.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match“Casting stopped during the update”
This is normal. Casting is unavailable while the system software is being installed. Wait until the update and any reboot finish, then open the casting app again.
“The LED is pulsing and nothing else seems to happen”
The pulsing LED indicates that the device is receiving the update. Keep power and network connections in place while the process remains within the normal 10–12-minute range. If it continues substantially longer, follow the connectivity check and one-minute power-cycle sequence.
“Can I unplug HDMI to cancel the update?”
HDMI carries the picture and sound; removing it does not provide a safe cancellation method. Leave the device powered and connected until the installation completes. If a restart is necessary because the update is far beyond the expected duration, unplug the power source for one minute as Google specifies.
After the update finishes
- Wait for the Google TV home screen to return and for any reboot to finish.
- Open a streaming app or start a cast only after the device is responsive.
- Optionally record the firmware value through Google Home > device tile > Settings > Device information > Technical information.
- If you are troubleshooting a bug, test the affected feature after the update and note whether the behavior changed.
System updates do not necessarily change every visible menu or app. The firmware notes may describe security, bug-fix, and performance work without listing a new user-facing feature.

Quick checklist
- Use the TV, not Google Home, to install a system update.
- Open All settings > System > About > System update.
- Keep power and internet connected until the process ends.
- Expect casting to be unavailable during installation.
- Use the 10–12-minute figure as Google’s typical duration, not a hard deadline.
- If it runs much longer, check power and connectivity, then unplug power for one minute and reconnect.
- Factory-reset only after those steps fail; it erases the device and requires setup again.
- Check the installed firmware in Google Home under Settings > Device information > Technical information.
- Interpret differences from a published build in light of Google’s staged rollout.
