To check for a One UI update, open Settings > Software update and tap Download and install or Check for updates. If an update is available, follow the prompts on your screen. The exact labels can vary by Galaxy model, software version, and carrier.
Check for a One UI update in Settings
- Open Settings and tap Software update. Depending on the phone, the option may instead be called System updates or appear under About device.
- Tap Download and install or Check for updates. Some phones or carriers show another button, such as Check for system updates or Check for software updates. Samsung’s US One UI 9 instructions use Settings > Software Update > Check for updates; its One UI 8 guide uses Download and install. Samsung’s One UI 9 update instructions and One UI 8 guide show the variation.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install it. Depending on the device, downloading may start automatically or you may need to tap a download or install button.
Check which One UI version is installed
Open Settings > About phone > Software information. Samsung says this screen shows the One UI version, Android version, build number, and other software details. See Samsung Canada’s software update guide.

If no update is available
An “up to date” message or no available update can be normal: it means no update is currently ready for that particular phone. Samsung says release timing and features can vary by model, carrier, and network, so an update announced for one Galaxy phone may not yet be available for another. Check your phone again later rather than assuming that every model receives a release at the same time.

Use Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac
Samsung documents Smart Switch as an alternate way to update a Galaxy device. It may be useful if you prefer to use a computer, but it does not guarantee that a newer update will be available than the one shown on the phone.
- Open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with a USB cable. Use the cable provided with the device if available, and set the USB connection to allow file transfer.
- If Smart Switch offers an update, follow its prompts to install it.
Samsung Singapore Support’s article, last updated August 26, 2026, recommends having at least 20% battery, leaving the USB cable connected, and not using the device during the update. The phone may restart several times. Samsung also says that returning to a previous firmware version after updating is not possible under its enhanced security policies. Which update method should you use?

Samsung’s guidance describes both routes but does not establish that either is universally faster or more reliable. For the computer method, first check whether the cable supplied with your phone supports the connection. If you need a replacement, confirm that it fits your phone and supports data transfer, not only charging.
