To check for a One UI update, open Settings > Software update and tap Download and install or Check for updates. If an update is offered, download it and follow the prompts to install it. The exact label and timing depend on your phone, carrier, and market.
Check for and install an update from your Galaxy phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. Some devices label this menu System updates.
- Tap Download and install or, on some software versions and carriers, Check for updates, Check for system updates, or Check for software updates.
- If an update is available, tap the download or install option shown, such as Download now or Install now.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Let the phone finish and restart if prompted; do not interrupt an update in progress.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guide gives the path as Software update > Download and install for One UI 8.0 or earlier, and Software update > Check for updates for One UI 8.5 or later. Labels can still differ by device and carrier. See Samsung’s update-menu instructions and basic update guide.

Check which One UI version is installed
Open Settings > About phone > Software information. The screen lists the One UI version, Android version, and build number. To review a previous update, look in the Software update menu for Last update, System Update history, or a similarly named history option, if your device provides one. Samsung explains these details in its One UI 8 guide and update guide.

Why an update may not appear
An empty update check does not by itself mean the phone is faulty. Samsung says availability is specific to the device and rollout context. Its Canada One UI 8 guide states, “Unless you’re in an exceptional case, it’s completely normal not to see any available updates.” The guide was updated July 16, 2026, and describes a Canadian rollout, not a universal schedule. Check your own phone rather than assuming that a release reported for another model, carrier, or market is available to yours.

If a download or installation fails, check these conditions:
- Internet: An internet connection is needed to download an update. Try Wi-Fi if mobile data is not working; some carriers require Wi-Fi.
- Battery: Samsung recommends charging the phone to at least 50% before installation.
- Storage: Insufficient free space can prevent an update. Samsung suggests using Device care to clear space or backing up files through Smart Switch or a Samsung or Google account.
- Carrier and rollout: Samsung notes that carrier-locked models may receive updates later than unlocked devices. Timing still varies by model, market, and carrier; the cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed date.

Use Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC
Smart Switch is Samsung’s computer-based alternative if you want to check from a PC or Mac. This route uses a USB connection to the computer rather than running the update from the phone’s Settings menu. Samsung does not establish that it is faster or better for every device.

- Connect the Galaxy phone using its USB cable. Samsung specifies the cable supplied with the device; some computers may require a USB adapter.
- Allow Smart Switch to detect the phone.
- If Update appears, select it and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the update finishes.
See Samsung’s Smart Switch update instructions. A suitable cable you already own is enough; buying another cable is not required for a normal over-the-air update.
