An imported Vivo phone is safe to buy only after two separate checks pass: the exact regional model must appear in an active Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) scope, and Vivo must confirm that the specific handset, purchase country, seller and documents qualify for service in India. A BIS registration does not create a warranty, while an IMEI or authenticity result does not prove BIS compliance.
Get the exact model code, BIS R-number, IMEI1 and IMEI2 from the seller before paying. Verify the R-number in BIS CARE or the BIS CRS portal, then ask Vivo India to confirm warranty or Multiple Countries Warranty eligibility in writing. Keep the confirmations, invoice and return terms with the phone’s identifying details.

What the two checks actually prove
Imported-phone buyers often treat “BIS approved” and “international warranty” as interchangeable claims. They are not. BIS registration concerns conformity of a covered product and the model listed in the registration record. Warranty coverage is a manufacturer service decision controlled by sales region, channel, proof of purchase and policy conditions.
| Check | Question it answers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| BIS CRS registration | Is this exact phone model included in a current CRS registration for mobile phones? | That Vivo will repair the phone in India, or that the seller is authorized. |
| Vivo IMEI and support confirmation | Does Vivo recognize this unit, and does the stated model, country of sale and seller qualify for Indian service under the applicable policy? | That the model has a BIS registration. |
| Invoice and seller documentation | Can you prove where and when the phone was bought and invoke the seller’s return terms? | That the phone is genuine, BIS-registered or covered by Vivo. |
For mobile phones, BIS CRS records use Indian Standard IS 13252 (Part 1):2010. The applicable record is model-specific: a different storage configuration, radio variant or regional code may not be covered merely because it belongs to the same commercial series. CRS registration is a conformity requirement for covered products and the relevant manufacturer or importer; it is not a consumer-facing promise that every device carrying the same brand can be sold or serviced under the same conditions.

Collect the identity details before sending money
Do not begin with a marketing name such as “Vivo X-series” or a seller’s claim that a handset is the global version. Ask for details tied to the actual unit and its box. A legitimate seller should be able to provide enough information for a pre-purchase check without requiring you to publish sensitive identifiers.
- Exact model code: Request the complete alphanumeric model identifier for the regional variant. Capture every suffix; similar names can represent different hardware or markets.
- BIS evidence: Ask for clear, unedited photographs of the product and box markings showing the BIS Standard Mark and R-number, if present. A screenshot without the model scope is not enough.
- IMEI1 and IMEI2: Obtain both numbers for a dual-SIM phone. The seller can display them from the device settings or by dialing
*#06#. Never post a full IMEI publicly. - Original sales information: Get the country of first sale, seller’s legal name, invoice format, purchase date and whether the channel is official or unofficial.
- Return terms: Save the written period, conditions and process for returning a phone that fails a registry or warranty check.
Compare the model code printed on the handset, retail box, invoice and Vivo’s support response. Also compare the IMEI shown on the device with the number on the box and invoice when available. A mismatch is a stop sign until Vivo or the seller resolves it in writing.
Verify the BIS CRS registration step by step
- Open an official BIS lookup. In the BIS CARE app, choose “Verify R-Number under CRS,” or use the R-number search on the BIS CRS public dashboard.
- Enter the R-number exactly. Preserve letters, digits and punctuation. Do not substitute a number from a charger, another phone or a different box.
- Confirm the product category. The result should identify the registered product as a mobile phone or the applicable phone category, not merely an accessory or unrelated electronic product.
- Read the registration scope. Check the manufacturer, product name, Indian Standard, brand, corresponding model and inclusion date. The corresponding-model field is the critical comparison with the phone you are buying.
- Check the live status and scope notes. Look for current status, amendments, additions or removals shown in the record. A seller’s old screenshot cannot show whether the live scope has changed.
- Match every identifier. Compare the registry’s brand and model wording with the exact regional model code, not just the family name or a visually similar variant.
- Save evidence. Capture the result showing the R-number and model scope, and note the date of the check. Keep it with the invoice and seller correspondence.
How to read a CRS record
A useful record normally exposes a chain of identity: R-number, manufacturer, product name, Indian Standard, brand, corresponding model and inclusion date. Treat the corresponding-model entry as a scope boundary. If it lists one model code, that is not automatic permission to assume that a later code, another memory configuration or an overseas variant is included.
The inclusion date helps you understand when that model entered the listed scope, but it is not a warranty start date and does not prove that the seller’s particular unit was imported through an authorized channel. Check the current status and any amendments rather than relying on the date alone.
When the R-number does not resolve
- Recheck transcription and ask the seller for a sharper photograph of the marking.
- Ask whether the number belongs to the phone itself rather than its charger, earphones or another product in the shipment.
- Search by the R-number through both official BIS interfaces if one interface is temporarily unavailable.
- If the result remains absent, contradictory or too broad to identify the model, contact BIS through its official support route and ask for clarification before paying.
Do not infer a pass from a registration for another model in the same Vivo series. A seller’s statement that “all Vivo phones are BIS certified” is not a model-level result. Likewise, a BIS mark on packaging should be treated as a lead to verify, not as proof that the printed mark is genuine or that its scope covers your regional code.
Check Vivo India service and warranty eligibility
After the BIS check, use Vivo’s own channels. Vivo India’s IMEI authentication page explains that an IMEI can be retrieved with *#06# or from the phone’s settings and provides customer-support routes. Use the page as an identity and support check, then ask support to make the coverage decision.
- Submit both IMEIs where applicable. For a dual-SIM handset, provide IMEI1 and IMEI2 through Vivo’s official check or support channel. Keep the numbers private except when dealing with the seller, Vivo or a service center.
- State the exact model and region. Include the complete model code, country where the phone was first sold, seller name and purchase date or planned purchase date.
- Ask a precise coverage question. Request written confirmation of whether this exact unit is eligible for repair or replacement in India under the standard India warranty, Multiple Countries Warranty or neither.
- Ask about channel restrictions. Tell Vivo whether the seller is an authorized Indian channel, an overseas retailer, a marketplace importer or an unofficial source. Coverage can depend on that distinction.
- Confirm acceptable proof. Ask which original invoice, tax document, serial-number record or other purchase evidence a service center will require.
- Save the response. Retain the case number, email or chat transcript and the date. A verbal assurance that cannot be tied to the IMEI and model is weak protection.
Vivo India’s standard warranty terms apply to Vivo handsets sold in India. The stated term is one year for the handset and six months for certain listed accessories, subject to the policy and valid proof of purchase. That wording does not automatically extend to a handset first sold abroad. Ask whether the accessory period applies to the exact accessory supplied with the imported package; do not assume every cable, charger or bundled item has identical coverage.

Vivo’s terms require proof of purchase for warranty repair or replacement. They identify exclusions such as invalid or mismatched purchase proof, unauthorized repairs, physical damage and liquid damage. Ask support how an imported unit would be treated before assuming that a valid IMEI alone creates entitlement. A phone can be identifiable in Vivo’s system yet still be refused under a regional, channel or documentation rule.
Understand Multiple Countries Warranty
Vivo offers a Multiple Countries Warranty arrangement only for designated models and designated regions. Eligibility is not a blanket promise for every phone described as “international.” The eligible-model and region list can change, and a service center may need to verify the device and inspect valid purchase evidence.
- Open Vivo’s current Multiple Countries Warranty page.
- Check the exact model code, not only the product family.
- Check the original purchase country or region against the listed destinations.
- Read the channel restrictions and documentation requirements.
- Ask Vivo to confirm the result for the actual IMEI before purchase.
The policy excludes unofficial-channel devices. Therefore, a phone bought through an importer may fail even when its model and country appear in a general eligible list. Treat the live list as a screening tool, not a substitute for a unit-specific answer. If the page does not clearly identify your model and purchase region, do not interpret a nearby model or neighboring country as an equivalent entry.
Compare an imported phone with an India-sold alternative
Use the following decision axes when a seller offers two variants or when you are comparing sellers. A lower price does not compensate for an unidentified model, absent proof or an unverified service path.
| Decision axis | What to require | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Exact-model BIS match | R-number record whose brand and corresponding model match the phone code. | Only a series name, a charger registration or a seller screenshot without scope. |
| India warranty | Written Vivo confirmation tied to the unit, seller and original purchase details. | “Global warranty” stated only in an advertisement. |
| Multiple Countries Warranty | Exact model and purchase region appear on the current eligible list, followed by Vivo confirmation. | Model absent from the list or seller identified as unofficial. |
| Proof of purchase | Original invoice that matches the model, IMEI, seller and date. | Generic receipt, altered invoice or no invoice. |
| Return protection | Written process and deadline if BIS or Vivo rejects the unit. | Seller refuses returns after opening or activation. |
For two otherwise similar offers, prefer the one with a verifiable model-level BIS scope, a documented India or designated multi-country service route, an authorized or clearly identified channel, matching purchase evidence and a practical written return process. Consider the imported option unverified if any one of those comparisons cannot be completed.

Common seller claims and the correct response
“The phone is the same as the Indian version.”
Ask for the complete model code and compare it with the BIS corresponding-model field. Radio bands, firmware, accessories and regulatory scope can differ even when the casing and marketing name look similar.
“The IMEI is genuine, so warranty is guaranteed.”
An IMEI check can help Vivo identify or authenticate a unit. It does not determine whether an overseas sale, unofficial channel or missing invoice qualifies for Indian warranty. Obtain the coverage answer from Vivo.
“The series is BIS registered.”
Request the R-number and inspect the model-level scope. Registration for one member of a family does not prove registration for every member.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“International warranty covers every country.”
Ask Vivo to identify the exact Multiple Countries Warranty entry for the model and original purchase region. The policy is limited, and unofficial-channel devices are excluded.
“You can check after delivery.”
Use any inspection or return window to perform the checks before activation or irreversible setup. If the seller will not allow a return when the model fails the checks, the risk is yours.

BIS record shows a different model
Pause the purchase. Send Vivo and the seller photographs of the model label and the registry result. Do not accept a verbal explanation that a suffix is harmless unless the official record or BIS support clarifies the scope.
Vivo cannot confirm coverage
Ask for escalation with both IMEIs, the model code, original country, seller and invoice. If Vivo will only say that service is assessed at a center, treat coverage as unconfirmed and rely on the seller’s written return terms rather than an assumed warranty.

Invoice does not match the phone
Request a corrected original invoice before payment or reject the transaction. Mismatched or invalid purchase proof is specifically identified as a warranty problem.
The seller refuses to share identifiers
Do not pay a non-refundable deposit. A genuine pre-purchase verification requires enough information to identify the exact model and unit while protecting the full IMEI from public disclosure.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check BIS certification for an imported Vivo phone?
Obtain the phone’s exact model code and R-number, then use BIS CARE’s “Verify R-Number under CRS” function or the BIS CRS public dashboard. Confirm that the record is for a mobile phone and that its brand and corresponding-model field match the exact regional variant. A series name or a charger’s R-number is not enough.

Can an IMEI check prove BIS registration?
No. Vivo’s IMEI page is useful for identifying or authenticating a device and reaching support. BIS registration must be verified separately through the R-number and model scope in the CRS record.
What if my model is not on the Multiple Countries Warranty list?
Do not assume coverage. The arrangement is limited to designated models and regions, and the list can change. Ask Vivo for a written unit-specific answer; if the model or purchase region is absent, treat multi-country coverage as unconfirmed.
Does a seller’s “international warranty” promise count?
Not by itself. Compare the exact model and original purchase region with Vivo’s current eligible list, check whether the channel is unofficial, and obtain confirmation from Vivo. Keep the seller’s promise only as part of the return documentation, not as proof of manufacturer coverage.

What proof will Vivo require?
Vivo’s terms require proof of purchase and exclude invalid or mismatched documents. Ask support which original invoice or other evidence the service center will accept and ensure it identifies the same model, seller, date and unit.
Should I share my full IMEI in a public listing?
No. Provide IMEIs only to the seller, Vivo or an authorized service center when needed for verification. Redact them in public screenshots while retaining unredacted records privately.
A practical go/no-go rule
Proceed only when the exact model has a matching live BIS CRS record, Vivo has confirmed the applicable Indian service route for the unit and purchase circumstances, and the seller provides matching proof and a workable return policy. If either official check is unresolved, classify the phone as an unsupported import rather than treating the seller’s description as coverage.
