How to Check Beach Water Quality and Advisories Before You Swim

Before swimming, check the official beach program for the exact swim area, confirm its latest advisory or closure and look at the sample or update date. Then check signs at the beach and watch for warning conditions. These steps use U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance; outside the United States, consult the responsible local public-health or environmental authority.

Check the exact beach and swim area

Start with the beach name and the state, Tribal, territorial or local beach-monitoring program. A large beach may have several access points or swimming areas, and a status posted for one location may not describe another. EPA’s beach lookup can help you find a listed U.S. beach and its jurisdiction’s program. If you cannot identify the program, EPA’s beach-program contacts page can help direct you to the relevant authority.

Confirm that the specific swim area is monitored. Monitoring does not cover every beach: some agencies do not have the resources to monitor all beach waters. EPA’s National List of Beaches describes monitoring status for beaches included in the relevant programs, but an entry—or a lack of an entry—does not by itself establish whether a particular location is safe to swim in today.

Use the local program for the latest status

Once you identify the responsible program, check its own beach page, map or advisory notice for the current status. Look for whether the area is under an advisory, closed, or listed with no restriction, and note the date of the most recent sample or update. If the page is unclear, contact the program before you go.

EPA’s national beach database, BEACON, is useful for finding beach information and for historical or aggregated records, but it is not a real-time safety guarantee. EPA says submissions may arrive “from days to months after the information is collected by the state, tribe, or territory,” and jurisdictions report on different schedules. If BEACON and a local status page appear to disagree, use the local program’s latest notice or contact the authority to clarify.

Information source Best use What to verify
Jurisdiction’s beach program Checking the latest local advisory or closure Exact swim area, status, and sample or update date
EPA beach lookup or BEACON Finding a listed beach, its program, or historical and aggregated information Whether the record covers the exact location and how current it is
Signs at the beach Checking notices posted at the site Whether a closure or other warning applies to the area where you plan to swim

Read what a water-quality result can—and cannot—tell you

Beach programs commonly test for fecal indicator bacteria such as enterococci and E. coli. These indicators help assess possible fecal contamination and pathogen risk; they are not a direct measurement of every disease-causing organism that might be in the water. Programs may use culture-based, qPCR or digital PCR methods, and monitoring frequency can vary with beach conditions and program practice.

There is no single sampling schedule or bacteria threshold that can be assumed to apply at every U.S. beach. State and Tribal governments may use EPA’s recommended recreational-water criteria when setting their own water-quality standards. EPA identifies its current ambient recreational-water bacterial-indicator criteria recommendations as issued in 2012; that does not mean every jurisdiction uses the same limits or sampling approach.

Check signs and conditions before entering the water

  1. Check for signs at the site. CDC advises staying out when signs say the swim area is closed. Follow posted warnings even if an online page does not show an advisory.
  2. Be more cautious after heavy rain. CDC recommends checking the swim area’s status before visiting after heavy rain.
  3. Stay out if the water looks or smells unusual. Do not swim if it is unusually cloudy or discolored, has scum, or smells bad.
  4. Follow harmful algal bloom notices. Some cyanobacteria can form blooms and produce toxins that make people and animals ill. A bloom’s appearance or odor can be a warning, but normal-looking water does not establish that toxins are absent. Follow local notices and keep children and pets away from suspect water.

If you cannot find a current result

A missing or old result is not the same as a current all-clear. Check whether the program monitors that specific swim area, look for the latest local notice and contact the responsible authority if the status or date is unclear. If you still cannot establish whether the area is open, or you see a posted warning or suspicious water conditions, choose another place to swim.
