Start with Android’s Privacy dashboard: choose camera, microphone, location, or another sensitive permission to see which apps used it and when. Then open Permission manager (or an individual app’s Permissions page) to revoke access that does not match the app’s purpose. Run Google Play Protect, and check an app’s Google Play Data safety section before installing it. These controls reveal warning signs and reduce exposure, but no single screen proves that an app or an entire phone is free of spyware.
What an Android spyware check can—and cannot—prove
Spyware is software that secretly monitors activity, collects information, or enables unwanted access. Android’s built-in controls are designed for consumer privacy and security, not for a forensic examination. They can show recent use of sensitive permissions, limit what an app is allowed to access, identify some harmful software, and provide the developer’s privacy disclosures. They cannot certify that every component on a phone is clean or that a developer’s disclosure is complete.

Treat the checks as layers. A suspicious pattern is stronger when several signals line up: an app requests capabilities unrelated to its advertised function, asks for broad or always-on access, pressures you to change a sensitive setting, conflicts with its Play disclosure, or triggers a Play Protect warning. A single permission is not proof of spyware. A navigation app may reasonably need location, and a messaging app may need camera access when you attach a photo.
Before you begin: Android versions and menu names
Settings labels differ among Android releases and phone manufacturers. On many current phones, privacy and security controls are grouped under Security and privacy. Android 12 and older devices may show Security and Privacy as separate sections. If a path below does not appear, open Settings and search for Privacy dashboard, Permission manager, Play Protect, or restricted settings.

The examples below describe standard Google Android and Google Play controls. A work or school administrator can manage some protections on an enrolled device, so an option may be unavailable or locked even when the steps are correct for a personal phone.
1. Use Privacy dashboard to inspect recent access
Privacy dashboard is the fastest way to see whether an app recently used a sensitive permission.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Security and privacy or Privacy, then select Privacy dashboard.
- Choose a permission category such as Camera, Microphone, or Location.
- Review the apps listed and the recorded access times. Select an app to open its permission details.
- Compare the access with what you were doing at that time. If it does not fit, continue to the app’s Permissions page and change the setting.
Google’s Android Help documentation says the history window is up to the last seven days on Android 13 and up to the last 24 hours on Android 12. The exact categories, time range, and layout depend on the Android version and manufacturer. Older activity outside the displayed window will not appear, so an empty history is not evidence that an app has never accessed a permission.

- Expected use: A map app using location while you navigate, or a camera app using the camera while you take a picture, has a clear explanation.
- Unexpected timing: Access while you were not using the related feature deserves a closer look. Check whether a legitimate background function explains it before concluding that the app is malicious.
- Unexpected app: An app whose core purpose does not involve the listed capability should be reviewed immediately.
- No entry: The dashboard only reflects the history and categories that your device records. It is not a complete activity log or a malware certificate.
2. Review and revoke permissions app by app
To inspect one application, use Settings → Apps → [app name] → Permissions. You can also review all applications that hold a particular permission by opening Settings → Privacy → Permission manager (or the equivalent path under Security and privacy) and selecting a category.
For location, camera, and microphone, many devices offer choices such as Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. Choose the narrowest option that still supports the feature you actually use. If you revoke access, the related feature may stop working; you can restore it later when you deliberately use that feature.

| Permission or access | What it can expose or enable | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Where the phone is or has been, depending on the access mode | Does the app need location for its main feature? Can it work only while you are using it? |
| Camera | Images or video captured through the camera | Is taking or scanning a picture part of the feature you selected? |
| Microphone | Sound captured through the microphone | Does the app provide calling, recording, voice search, or another audio function? |
| Contacts | Names, phone numbers, and other address-book information | Does the app need to find people you know, or is this unrelated to its purpose? |
| Call logs and SMS | Communication records and, depending on the access, message content | Is the app a communication, calling, or messaging tool that needs this data? |
| Notifications | Notification text and information displayed by other apps | Does the feature genuinely require reading notifications, and is the developer trustworthy? |
| Photos and files | Personal images, documents, and other stored files | Can you grant access only to the specific items or feature you intend to use? |
Permissions describe what an app is allowed to access, not what it necessarily sends to a server. Conversely, an app can process information locally without treating it as collected in its Google Play Data safety disclosure. Use the permission screen to control capability, then use the Play listing and the app’s behavior to assess data handling.
Permission combinations that deserve extra scrutiny
Consider the combination and timing rather than counting permissions. Camera plus microphone can be normal for a video-call app, while contacts plus SMS may be expected for a messaging app. The concern rises when an app with no clear reason for those capabilities asks for them together, requests access before you use the related feature, or insists on broader access after a narrower option would work.

3. Check device-wide security and privacy controls
Open Settings → Security and privacy on many Android 13-and-newer phones. On older versions, open the separate Security and Privacy sections. Review the items shown for your device:
- Play Protect status or warnings: Follow up on any identified harmful app.
- Privacy permissions: Use the dashboard and permission controls described above.
- System update status: Install available Android updates through the device’s normal update screen.
- Device security recommendations: Address issues Android specifically identifies, while noting that the available recommendations vary by model and software version.
This overview is a useful starting point, not a substitute for opening the individual app and permission records. A device can show no recommendation while an unnecessary permission remains enabled.
4. Run Google Play Protect
Play Protect is Android’s built-in app-scanning service. Google says it checks apps before they are downloaded from Google Play and periodically scans the device, including apps installed from other sources. When it identifies harmful software, it can warn you, deactivate the app, or remove it.

- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Select Play Protect.
- Read the current status and start a scan if the option is offered. Review any warning and follow the displayed remediation steps.
A clean result means Play Protect did not identify a problem in that scan; it is not a published guarantee that no spyware exists. Keep Play Protect enabled, especially if you install an application outside Google Play. Treat a warning as a high-priority reason to stop using the app, review its permissions, and remove it if you do not trust it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Inspect Google Play’s Data safety section before installing
For an app distributed through Google Play, scroll to Data safety on its listing and open the details. Compare the developer’s disclosures with the app’s stated purpose and the permissions it requests.
- Look for the types of data the developer says the app collects or shares.
- Check whether the stated use makes sense for the feature you plan to use.
- Compare the disclosure with the runtime permission prompts. A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof of spyware.
- Read the developer identity, description, and update information so you know which app you are evaluating.
Google describes Data safety as developer-provided information for apps distributed on Google Play. It is not an independent audit and is different from the technical permissions list. The information can vary with how the app is used, the user’s region, and age. Google also explains that data used only on the device may not appear as collected. Therefore, Data safety is a transparency signal, not a complete account of runtime behavior.
6. Treat restricted settings and accessibility access as high-impact decisions
Some capabilities are more powerful than ordinary runtime permissions. Accessibility access, for example, can allow an app to read content on the screen and interact with other apps. Legitimate assistive tools use these abilities, but a general-purpose app that requests them without a clear explanation needs careful review.
Google’s Android guidance states: "We don’t recommend that you allow restricted settings unless you trust the app developer." Do not enable a restricted setting simply because an app claims it is required. First verify the developer, the app’s purpose, and why the feature cannot work with a narrower permission. If the explanation does not make sense, decline the request and consider uninstalling the app.

Questions to answer before granting accessibility or another restricted capability
- What exact feature needs to read the screen or control other apps?
- Did you intentionally install the app from a source you trust?
- Is the request consistent with a genuine assistive, automation, or device-management function?
- Can you use the app without enabling the setting?
- Does the app’s Play listing explain the capability and its data practices?
How to judge whether a permission is risky
Use the following decision framework for every sensitive request. It is an evaluation method, not a score or certification.
| Evaluation axis | Lower concern | Higher concern |
|---|---|---|
| Necessity | The permission directly supports the app’s advertised core function. | The app cannot explain why it needs the capability. |
| Access scope | Foreground or one-time access is enough for the feature. | The app seeks always-on or broad access without a clear need. |
| Point-of-request explanation | The app explains what will happen before Android’s prompt appears. | The app pressures you, uses vague language, or blocks unrelated features until you agree. |
| Disclosure alignment | Data safety information is consistent with the purpose and observed requests. | The listing and behavior leave important data use unexplained. |
| System signals | Play Protect and Android show no warning, while other evidence also fits. | Play Protect warns, or Android identifies a security problem. |
Google Play policy expects apps to limit sensitive data access and use to functionality that users expect or have consented to. The policy’s examples of problematic behavior include unrelated transmission of call recordings and stealing information from other apps’ notifications. Those examples illustrate why context matters: the same technical capability may be legitimate for one app and inappropriate for another.
What to do when an app seems suspicious
- Stop using the questionable feature. Do not provide more data while you investigate.
- Revoke unnecessary permissions. Use the app’s Permissions page or Permission manager. Choose Don’t allow or the narrowest available option.
- Remove sensitive restricted access. If the app has accessibility or another restricted setting that you did not knowingly approve, turn it off after checking the relevant Settings page.
- Uninstall the app if you do not trust it. Remove an app that has no legitimate explanation for its access or that you no longer need.
- Run Play Protect. Open Play Store → profile icon → Play Protect and review the result or any alert.
- Update Android and your apps. Install available updates through the phone’s standard update controls and the Play Store.
- Recheck the dashboard. After removal or permission changes, use Privacy dashboard to watch for new access by the remaining apps.
If the phone belongs to an employer or school, contact the administrator before removing management software or changing a policy-controlled setting. The administrator may be responsible for security controls that you cannot modify.
Common situations and how to respond
The app asks for location even when you are not navigating
Open its Permissions page and see whether Allow only while using the app or Ask every time is available. If the app’s main function does not need location, choose Don’t allow. If a feature stops working, restore access only when you intentionally use that feature and reassess whether the broader setting is necessary.
A messaging app requests camera access
Camera access can be reasonable for taking or attaching photos. Grant it only when you use that function, and prefer a narrower option when your phone offers one. Review the app’s other requests separately; a legitimate camera use does not justify unrelated access to contacts, notifications, or files.
Best Value
An app wants notification access
Notification access can expose text and information displayed by other apps. Verify that reading notifications is central to the advertised feature. If it is not, decline the request. A policy example from Google treats stealing information from other apps’ notifications as problematic behavior.
Play Protect reports no problem, but the app still feels wrong
Do not treat a clean scan as a reason to ignore contradictory evidence. Play Protect is one protective layer, while permissions, restricted settings, the app’s purpose, and its disclosures provide additional context. Revoke unnecessary access and uninstall the app if you do not trust it.
The Data safety section does not match the permission list
That difference does not by itself establish spyware. Data safety is a developer disclosure and is not the same as Android’s technical permission list; some processing can occur locally. Use the mismatch as a prompt to read the listing carefully, check the developer, limit permissions, and avoid installing the app if the explanation remains inadequate.

Search Settings for Privacy dashboard. If it is absent, your Android version or manufacturer may use a different label or may not provide the same history view. You can still open Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions or Permission manager to review and revoke access.
The permission choices on my phone are different
Android version, manufacturer software, permission type, and device policy affect the available choices. Use the narrowest option shown on your phone, and remember that revoking access can disable the related feature.
A practical inspection routine
Use this sequence whenever you install an unfamiliar app or notice behavior that does not fit its purpose:
- Identify the app’s developer and intended feature.
- Open Privacy dashboard and inspect recent camera, microphone, location, and other available access.
- Open Permission manager and the app’s Permissions page; remove access that is not needed.
- Check whether the app has accessibility or another restricted capability enabled.
- Run Play Protect and resolve any warning.
- For a Google Play app, compare Data safety with the app’s purpose and requests.
- Keep the app only if its capabilities, explanations, and observed behavior make sense together.
The limits of a consumer spyware check
Privacy dashboard history is limited by the device’s reporting window and categories. Permission controls show authorization, not every action an app takes. Play Protect can detect and remediate some harmful apps, but Google does not present a clean scan as a guarantee of no spyware. Data safety entries come from developers and are not independent audits. Accessibility and other restricted settings can be legitimate while also granting powerful capabilities.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For those reasons, a clean-looking phone should be described as having no warning found in the checks you performed—not as forensically certified. If you face a serious safety, stalking, or account-compromise concern, preserve relevant information and seek qualified incident-response or law-enforcement help appropriate to your situation; the Android screens described here are not designed to establish attribution or prove covert monitoring.
