How to Check and Update Your Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Number (2026 Guide)

To check the mobile number linked to Aadhaar, use UIDAI’s official mobile-number verification service. If the number is wrong, inaccessible, or no longer yours, UIDAI’s FAQ directs you to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or its postman service. UIDAI’s website also currently lists mobile-number update in the Aadhaar app, but that listing conflicts with the FAQ’s statement that mobile updates are not permitted through online mode. Treat the app as an option only when its live instructions show that the service is available for your account.

Do not use a third-party “Aadhaar lookup” site or pay an agent to reveal the number. The official route protects your identity data and gives you an acknowledgement or service record.

Check first: are you verifying or changing the number?

Verification and updating are separate actions. Verification tells you which number UIDAI has recorded from your enrolment or most recent Aadhaar-data update. Updating replaces that record with a new number. A registered number matters because UIDAI says, “Registered mobile number is essential to access Aadhaar Online Services.”

Start with the verification service even if you think the old number is obvious. It can reveal whether the number was saved correctly, whether a previous request took effect, or whether the record is different from the SIM you currently use. UIDAI’s official Updating Data on Aadhaar page provides the relevant verification facility and explains the role of a registered number.

How to check the mobile number linked to Aadhaar

  1. Open UIDAI’s official service page. Use the UIDAI “Updating Data on Aadhaar” page, not a search result that promises to display Aadhaar data.
  2. Select the mobile-number verification feature. UIDAI describes this as checking the number declared at enrolment or during the latest Aadhaar-detail update.
  3. Complete the fields and security checks shown on the live UIDAI page. The exact screen and required inputs can change, so follow the prompts currently displayed rather than an old screenshot or video.
  4. Read the result carefully. Compare the displayed or confirmed number with the SIM you control. If it is current and accessible, you normally do not need an update.
  5. Stop if a site asks for unnecessary information. Close pages that request your Aadhaar details for advertising, payment, remote access, or an unofficial “verification certificate.” Use only UIDAI’s domain.

The verification result is not a substitute for changing the number. If the record is outdated, belongs to a lost SIM, or contains a typo, use one of the update routes below.

What the verification result means

The service confirms the number UIDAI has on record from your enrolment or latest Aadhaar-data update. It does not check whether your telecom operator still considers the SIM active, whether the number belongs to you today, or whether your bank and tax accounts have the same contact detail. A successful check therefore answers one narrow question: which mobile number is stored in the Aadhaar record.

If the result is masked or displayed only partially, compare the visible digits with the numbers you control and follow any confirmation message shown by UIDAI. Never attempt to infer a complete number from an unofficial website. If the number is not yours, treat the record as outdated and submit an update rather than repeatedly running the check.

Which update route should you use?

UIDAI’s published information supports three practical routes. The centre and postman routes are stated in the FAQ; the app is listed on a current UIDAI service page. UIDAI does not publish a complete comparison of app eligibility, postman coverage, or authentication conditions, so availability must be checked at the time you apply.

Route What UIDAI currently establishes When it makes sense Important limitation
Aadhaar app UIDAI’s current service listing includes “Mobile Number Update.” Use it only if the installed official app displays the service and accepts your case. The FAQ also says mobile update is not permitted through online mode; UIDAI has not published a universal app procedure or eligibility list in the cited guidance.
Aadhaar Enrolment Centre The FAQ explicitly directs holders to a centre for a mobile-number change. Best-defined route when you need a dependable, documented process. You must attend the centre and complete the identity checks shown there.
Postman service The FAQ says a holder can request the mobile-number update through a postman service. Useful where this service is offered locally and an in-person visit is inconvenient. UIDAI’s cited pages do not describe local coverage, booking, timing, or a separate fee for this route.

Do not interpret the app listing as proof that every Aadhaar holder can complete a remote update. If the app does not show the option, fails its eligibility checks, or gives instructions you cannot complete, use the centre route described in the FAQ.

Using the Aadhaar app: what is and is not confirmed

UIDAI’s current service page lists mobile-number update among Aadhaar app services. That is different from the myAadhaar web portal. The FAQ’s “not permitted through online mode” wording should therefore not be treated as a definitive statement that no digital initiation is possible, nor should the app listing be treated as a guarantee of remote completion.

Install or open only the official Aadhaar app, check its current service menu, and read the eligibility and authentication instructions presented for your account. UIDAI has not supplied a detailed, generally applicable sequence of app screens, rollout conditions, or eligibility rules in the cited pages. Do not rely on a guide that asks you to bypass those checks, send an Aadhaar image to an individual, or pay outside the official flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the app route is unavailable

Take a screenshot of any error or note the exact message, then follow UIDAI’s FAQ and request the update at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or through the postman route. An unavailable app option does not mean your Aadhaar record cannot be corrected.

Before you start an update

Decide which new number should remain active for Aadhaar notifications. Use a number you personally control and can keep active; changing it again later requires another update request. If the number is on a family member’s or employer’s account, make sure you can reliably receive messages and recover access if the SIM is replaced.

  • Have the new SIM or phone available so you can check the digits while submitting the request.
  • Write the number down temporarily and compare it with the number shown on the operator’s screen.
  • Do not assume a bank, tax, passport, or telecom update changes Aadhaar automatically. Each organisation maintains its own contact record.
  • Use the official UIDAI site or app directly, rather than links sent by an unknown person through SMS, email, or social media.

UIDAI’s FAQ says an old mobile number and a supporting document are not required for a mobile-number update. A centre may still display general identity or authentication instructions for the service; follow the official operator’s process, but do not pay for a document that UIDAI does not require merely to prove ownership of the old SIM.

Update the number at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre

  1. Find an authorised centre. Use the Bhuvan centre locator referenced on UIDAI’s Aadhaar Seva Kendra page. Check the address and opening information before travelling.
  2. Book an appointment if helpful. UIDAI says appointment booking is free and does not require the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. An appointment can reduce waiting, but the page also provides centre-service information for people who need to attend without relying on the old number.
  3. State that you want a mobile-number update. Tell the operator whether the old SIM was lost, disconnected, or simply replaced. UIDAI’s FAQ says the old mobile number is not required for this request.
  4. Complete the centre’s identity and biometric checks. Follow the operator’s instructions on the official enrolment system. The cited FAQ does not require a supporting document for the mobile-number update, so do not delay solely because you lack a document proving the old number.
  5. Provide the new number carefully. Check every digit on the screen before authorising submission. A typo can leave you unable to receive future service notifications.
  6. Pay the displayed official charge and collect the acknowledgement slip. The slip is your evidence of submission and shows the charge applied at that centre.

Keep the acknowledgement until the new number works for Aadhaar services. Do not hand over your phone unlocked or share one-time passwords with anyone who is not operating the official service.

Fees, appointment rules, and what to carry

UIDAI’s current fee page lists ₹75 for a standalone demographic update at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre, including a mobile-number update. The amount is inclusive of applicable taxes. UIDAI says the applicable charge is displayed at the centre and on the acknowledgement slip. If the demographic update is performed together with a biometric update, UIDAI lists the demographic component as free; ask the operator to show how the combined service is recorded before you approve it.

Appointment booking is free and, according to UIDAI, does not require access to the Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Booking limits and interface rules can change, so rely on the live appointment page rather than an older article. Bring the Aadhaar information and the phone containing the new SIM if you have it, but UIDAI’s FAQ specifically says the old number and a supporting document are not required for the mobile update.

Before paying, confirm that the service selected is a standalone demographic update and that the amount shown includes applicable taxes. Keep both the printed acknowledgement and any digital receipt. If the amount on the slip differs from the amount displayed at the centre, ask for an explanation immediately; a receipt is easier to correct while you are still at the counter.

Using the postman route

UIDAI’s FAQ names a postman service as an alternative to visiting an enrolment centre. The cited UIDAI pages do not explain which postal areas offer it, how to request a visit, the identity checks used, or whether a separate local charge applies. Contact the relevant official service channel in your area and confirm those details before handing over personal information or money.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the postman route is not available locally or cannot complete the required authentication, switch to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. Do not give your Aadhaar number, OTP, or a copy of an identity document to an unverified caller claiming to arrange a visit.

What happens after you submit the update?

UIDAI says a mobile-number or email update is confirmed by notification to the newly supplied mobile number or email. It does not send a new Aadhaar letter for this type of change. Test the new SIM’s ability to receive the notification, and retain the acknowledgement slip in case you need to ask about the request.

UIDAI’s “Your Aadhaar” page states that normally 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days. This is an aggregate service statistic, not a promise that an individual request will finish within 30 days. A request can take longer if verification, data quality, or operational issues require additional handling.

Do not treat the absence of a new Aadhaar letter as evidence that the request failed. For this change, the notification and your acknowledgement are the meaningful records. Once the new number is active, try the Aadhaar online service that prompted the update. If it still cannot send a message, first compare the number on your acknowledgement with the number you supplied before opening a duplicate request.

If you lost the old SIM

You do not need to recover the old number before starting the correction. UIDAI’s FAQ says the old mobile number is not required, and it also says a supporting document is not required for the mobile update. Use the centre route if the app does not offer a suitable service. At the centre, provide a number you control and check it digit by digit before submission.

Changing the Aadhaar record does not recover the old SIM, alter your telecom account, or update the mobile number held by banks, tax portals, or other services. Those organisations have separate records and must be updated through their own official channels.

If the lost SIM may be misused, contact your telecom provider promptly to block or replace it. That telecom step is separate from the Aadhaar update. Complete both through official channels, and do not give a caller claiming to be from UIDAI remote access to your phone while you are trying to secure the old number.

Troubleshooting common problems

The verification page does not show the number I expect

Confirm that you used UIDAI’s official service and entered the requested details exactly as shown. If the result still differs, treat UIDAI’s result as the current Aadhaar record and submit a mobile-number update rather than repeatedly trying third-party sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app has no mobile-update button

Check that you are using the official, current app and that it is updated. If the service is still absent, the app route is not available for your case at that time. Follow the FAQ’s centre or postman route.

The centre asks for the old number or a supporting document

Point out that UIDAI’s FAQ says neither is required for a mobile-number update. Ask the operator to clarify whether they are describing a different service. If the issue is not resolved, leave with no payment or document handover and contact UIDAI through its official grievance channel.

The fee is different from what you expected

Check the amount displayed at the centre and printed on the acknowledgement slip. UIDAI’s current listed standalone demographic-update fee is ₹75, inclusive of applicable taxes. Ask for an itemised explanation if the request is combined with another service.

No notification arrives

Verify that the new number was entered correctly on the acknowledgement slip, allow the stated processing period to pass, and then contact UIDAI using the acknowledgement details. Do not submit multiple duplicate requests solely because an SMS is delayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You suspect fraud

Stop the transaction, do not share OTPs or screen access, and keep receipts or messages. UIDAI lists helpline 1947 for grievances. Use the official UIDAI website and centre information rather than a paid intermediary.

The number works for calls but not for Aadhaar messages

Check the number printed on your acknowledgement and wait for processing to complete. A working SIM does not prove that UIDAI has finished the update. If the processing period has passed and the acknowledgement shows the correct number, contact UIDAI through an official channel rather than asking a retailer or agent to “refresh” the record.

You moved to a new phone but kept the same number

A phone change alone does not require an Aadhaar update if the mobile number is unchanged. Use the verification service to confirm the stored number, then troubleshoot the handset, SIM, or message delivery with your telecom provider if necessary.

Security checklist

  • Use only UIDAI pages, the official Aadhaar app, or a centre identified through UIDAI’s locator.
  • Check the domain before entering Aadhaar details; an attractive “status” page is not evidence that it is genuine.
  • Never publish your Aadhaar number, OTP, acknowledgement number, or the new mobile number in a public forum.
  • Read the number on the operator’s screen and acknowledgement slip before approving the request.
  • Keep the acknowledgement until the new number receives an official notification and works for the Aadhaar services you need.
  • Report suspicious requests or service disputes through UIDAI’s official grievance channels, including helpline 1947.

The practical decision

Use UIDAI’s verification feature to establish what is currently recorded. For a change, check the live Aadhaar app first because UIDAI now lists a mobile-update service there, but do not assume universal remote eligibility. When the app is unavailable or unclear, the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre is the explicitly documented route; UIDAI also identifies a postman service where it is offered. The centre fee, acknowledgement, and notification process give you a traceable record from submission to confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check my Aadhaar-linked mobile number online?

Yes. UIDAI provides an official mobile-number verification feature that checks the number declared at enrolment or during your latest Aadhaar-detail update. Use UIDAI’s domain rather than a third-party lookup site.

Can I update my Aadhaar mobile number online?

UIDAI’s FAQ says mobile-number updates are not permitted through online mode and directs holders to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or postman service. A current UIDAI service page also lists mobile-number update in the Aadhaar app. Check the live official app for availability and instructions; do not assume every holder can complete the change remotely.

Do I need my old SIM or a document proving the old number?

No. UIDAI’s FAQ says the old mobile number and a supporting document are not required for a mobile-number update.

How much does an Aadhaar mobile-number update cost?

UIDAI currently lists ₹75, inclusive of applicable taxes, for a standalone demographic update at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. The demographic component is listed as free when performed together with a biometric update. Confirm the amount displayed at the centre and on your acknowledgement slip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I book a centre appointment without my registered mobile number?

Yes. UIDAI says appointment booking is free and does not require access to the Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Use the live appointment system because interface rules can change.

How long does the update take?

UIDAI states that normally 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days. That is an aggregate service statistic, not a guarantee for an individual request.

Will UIDAI send a new Aadhaar letter after a mobile-number update?

No. UIDAI says a mobile-number or email update is confirmed by notification to the newly supplied mobile number or email and that it does not send a new Aadhaar letter for this change.

What should I do if the app does not show mobile-number update?

Use the official app only if it displays the service and accepts your case. If the option is missing or its instructions cannot be completed, follow UIDAI’s FAQ and request the change at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or through the postman route where available.

Does changing the Aadhaar mobile number update my bank or tax records?

No. Aadhaar, banks, tax portals, telecom accounts, and other services maintain separate records. Update each organisation through its own official channel.

The Bottom Line

Verify the number through UIDAI first. If it is wrong or inaccessible, check whether the official Aadhaar app currently offers mobile-number update; otherwise use an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or the postman route identified by UIDAI. The centre’s listed standalone fee is ₹75, the old number and a supporting document are not required, and UIDAI says confirmation comes by notification rather than a new Aadhaar letter.
