Use Steam’s built-in Verify integrity of game files first. Open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and run verification. It checks the local installation and replaces missing or damaged content without resetting your Steam Deck or Linux system. A message that one or more files failed to verify is often normal because Steam may leave local configuration files unchanged; treat it as a problem only when the game still has missing content, crashes, or will not launch.
The safest first repair: verify the game in Steam
Steam verification compares the files installed on your device with the version recorded for that game. If content is missing or differs from Steam’s copy, the client downloads a replacement. This is the appropriate first step for a game that suddenly crashes, stops launching, reports missing content, or appears incomplete after an interrupted update.

Verification affects the selected game rather than your whole library. It does not normally remove your save files, reset SteamOS, or alter unrelated games. Steam warns that the scan can take several minutes and should not run while other system-intensive work is competing for disk, CPU, or network resources. Do not verify several games at the same time.

What you need before starting
- Steam must be online and signed in to the account that owns the game.
- The game should be closed. Exit any launcher or overlay that may still be using its files.
- Allow enough free storage for Steam to download replacement files and temporarily stage them.
- If the device is behaving erratically, restart it before beginning the scan.
Verify files in the desktop Steam client
- Restart the computer if the game or Steam recently crashed, then launch Steam.
- Open Library and locate the affected game.
- Open the game’s context menu, or select its gear menu on the game page, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files in the Properties window.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish checking and, if necessary, downloading files. Keep Steam open until the operation reports completion.
- Launch the game normally. If it starts, test the part of the game that was failing rather than immediately changing other settings.
The labels above are the current desktop-client route. Steam can change its layout, but the operation remains in the game’s Properties under the installed-file controls.

Verify a game on Steam Deck
Steam Deck offers the same repair operation, but the controls differ between Gaming Mode and the desktop client. Do not assume a particular physical button is universal; use the selected game’s menu or gear icon and follow the on-screen Properties route.
Gaming Mode
- Restart the Deck if the game or Steam interface has been unstable.
- Open the Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s menu from its Library page.
- Choose Properties, then open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and confirm if Steam asks.
- Leave the Deck connected to power when practical, especially for a large installation, and wait for the verification and any download to finish.
- Start the game again. If it still fails, record whether the failure occurs before the game window, at a loading screen, or after a save is selected.
Desktop Mode
In Desktop Mode, use the desktop Steam client path: Library, the game’s context or gear menu, Properties, Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files. The same installation is being checked; changing modes does not require a separate repair procedure.
How to interpret the verification result

A failed-file count is not a diagnosis by itself. A game that launches and plays normally after verification usually does not need further repair, even if Steam reports a small number of files that it left unchanged.

If verification does not fix the launch or crash problem
Work from the least destructive step to the most specialized. The correct next action depends on whether one game is affected, whether Steam’s download system is involved, and whether the title is native Linux software or a Windows game running through Proton.
1. Restart and install system updates
Restart Steam Deck after installing available SteamOS updates. On a Linux computer, update the distribution and graphics drivers using the distribution’s normal supported process. A pending kernel, Mesa, firmware, or Steam client update can cause launch failures that a file scan cannot repair.
If the problem began immediately after an update, note the timing. Do not repeatedly delete and redownload the game before determining whether the failure is system-wide or limited to that release.

- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Use Clear Download Cache, then sign in again if Steam requests it.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the library that contains the game and use the library-folder repair option available there.
- After Steam rebuilds the library state, run verification once more and allow any queued update to complete.
Clearing the download cache removes cached download data, not installed game saves. Steam may require a sign-in afterward. Library repair addresses the relationship between Steam and the storage location; it is different from deleting the game directory manually.
3. Check free space and storage behavior
Replacement downloads need working space in addition to the game’s final size. A nearly full internal drive, microSD card, or Linux filesystem can make verification fail even when the original files are present. Check the destination library’s available capacity and whether other games can install or update there.
Repeated corruption across several games, disappearing files, read-only errors, unexplained slowdowns, or failures that return immediately after a successful download point toward storage, filesystem, power, or memory trouble. Back up important saves and personal files before undertaking hardware or operating-system recovery. Verification cannot repair a failing drive.
Steam Deck: check Proton compatibility
On Steam Deck, many Windows games run through Proton rather than as native Linux builds. File verification repairs the installed game content, but it does not guarantee that the selected Proton tool, shader cache, launch option, or game update is compatible with the current SteamOS version.

Try the latest Proton version for instability
- Open the game’s Library page and its Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool if it is not already enabled.
- Select the latest Proton version available in the list, then close Properties and launch the game.
Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version when an application is unstable. Change one compatibility setting at a time so you can identify which change helped.
Understand the download consequence
Forcing Proton can make Steam download the Windows version of a title when only a Linux version was installed. That can require a substantial additional download and more disk space. Check the download queue and available storage before assuming that the game has become corrupted.
When Proton-specific help is appropriate
If a native Linux game works but a Windows game fails under Proton, or if the failure is tied to one Proton release, the issue may be compatibility rather than damaged files. Record the game version, SteamOS version, Proton version, launch options, and the exact symptom before seeking game-specific community or developer guidance. Proton problems can also be reported through Valve’s Proton issue database when the failure is reproducible and not limited to a local installation.
Linux-specific checks before blaming corruption
Steam’s Linux troubleshooting guidance recommends updating Linux, verifying the game, disabling non-essential Linux applications, and checking the game’s system requirements. Apply those checks in this order:
- Confirm requirements: Check the game’s required architecture, graphics API, driver support, RAM, storage, and controller requirements against the machine.
- Update supported components: Bring the distribution, graphics stack, firmware, and Steam client up to date through normal system tools.
- Remove interference: Temporarily disable non-essential overlays, recording tools, performance monitors, compatibility wrappers, and custom launch scripts.
- Test without custom launch options: A stale environment variable or command-line option can prevent launch even when every game file is correct.
- Separate native and Proton cases: A native Linux build and a Windows build through Proton can have different dependencies, prefixes, and failure modes.
Avoid copying random commands or scripts from forums into a Steam Deck terminal. Valve’s desktop FAQ warns that software installed outside Flatpak, including software installed with package-manager commands, may be removed by a SteamOS update. Use game-specific, authoritative instructions when a dependency or prefix really must be changed.
What not to delete or reset as a first step
Manual file surgery often creates a second problem. Do not delete the entire game directory, Proton prefixes, shader caches, compatibility data, or user folders merely because Steam displayed a failed-file message. Those locations can contain settings, mods, save data, or credentials, and the correct treatment varies by game.
Do not assume that uninstalling and reinstalling is superior to verification. A reinstall consumes more bandwidth and time, and it will not fix a driver, Proton, permissions, filesystem, or hardware problem. Use a full reinstall only after the lower-impact checks fail or game-specific support explicitly calls for it, and back up saves first when the game stores them locally.

When SteamOS recovery is justified
SteamOS recovery is for broad operating-system trouble, not the routine remedy for one corrupted game. Consider it only when multiple applications or system functions remain unstable after updates and a restart, or when Steam Support’s normal steps indicate an operating-system problem.

Read the exact recovery screen instead of relying on the option name. Copy saves and personal files to a safe location, confirm which games can be redownloaded, and disconnect storage that must not be erased. Recovery documentation distinguishes rollback, reset, erase, repair, and re-image actions; they are not interchangeable.
A practical decision path
- Only one game is affected: Restart, verify its files, then check updates and Proton or Linux compatibility.
- Several games fail to update or validate: Check free space, clear the download cache, repair the Steam library folder, and examine the storage device.
- Only Proton games fail: Test the latest Proton version, remove custom launch options, and document the reproducible game-specific behavior.
- Native and Proton games both fail, or the desktop itself is unstable: Update SteamOS or Linux, restart, and investigate drivers, filesystem health, and hardware.
- System instability continues after those checks: Back up data and review the appropriate SteamOS recovery option or contact Steam Support. Do not jump directly to a factory reset for a single-game error.
When to contact the developer or Steam Support
Contact the game developer when Steam’s general steps fail and the problem is specific to that title, especially when a current update introduced the failure. Include the operating system or SteamOS version, hardware model, game version, whether the installation is native or Proton, the verification result, and the exact point of failure.
Use Steam Support for persistent Deck-wide instability, Steam client errors, library or download failures that affect multiple games, or recovery questions. A clear timeline and the steps already attempted help support staff distinguish corrupted content from a compatibility, account, storage, or operating-system issue.
