To check storage on an Apple TV 4K, open Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage. The list shows how much space each installed app uses. You can then turn on automatic offloading, or select individual apps to offload or delete. Offloading removes the app but keeps its data; deleting removes both the app and its data.
What storage management on Apple TV 4K actually controls
Apple TV 4K streams video and music, but apps are stored locally on the device. The built-in storage screen is therefore focused on app usage rather than a general file browser. Apple’s current Apple TV 4K user guide identifies Manage Storage as the place to see which apps are taking space and to remove them.

You do not need an external accessory or a separate utility to perform these checks. The controls are part of tvOS. Because Apple does not publish a storage-capacity figure in the storage-management guidance, this procedure is about identifying and reclaiming space, not calculating a remaining-capacity number from an official table.

The Manage Storage screen gives you an app-by-app view. Use the following path on your Apple TV 4K:

- Open Settings from the Home Screen.
- Select General.
- Move down to the Usage section.
- Select Manage Storage.
- Review the list. Each listed app has an amount showing the space it is using.
Start with the largest entries if your aim is to recover space quickly. The list is also useful before making a deletion decision: it lets you distinguish an app that occupies meaningful local storage from one whose removal would have little effect.
If you are checking storage because an app is no longer needed, note its position in this list before changing anything. You can then confirm that the selected app, rather than a similarly named app, is the one you intend to manage.
Turn on automatic offloading of unused apps
Automatic offloading is the least hands-on way to reduce app storage. To enable it, open Settings > Apps, then turn on Offload Unused Apps.

The app remains represented on the Home Screen with a download icon. Select that icon to download the app again. Apple says the data is restored if the app is still available in the App Store.
This option suits an Apple TV 4K that has many installed apps but only a few used regularly. It avoids requiring you to decide which rarely used app to remove today. The trade-off is that an app may need to be downloaded again before it can be opened, and restoration depends on the app remaining available in the App Store.

Offload or delete: which choice is safer?
When you manage an individual app, tvOS presents two different actions. Check the wording on the confirmation prompt before accepting it, especially if the app may contain locally retained information that you want to keep.

Deleting a purchased app does not require you to buy it again: Apple says it can be downloaded again without repurchasing it. That does not mean its data will return. Deletion removes the app’s data, so any information that was stored locally may not be restored when you reinstall the app.

It removes the executable app to free space but keeps the data associated with it. Automatic offloading follows the same basic preservation idea, with the additional condition that the app must still be available in the App Store for a later download and restoration.
Manually offload or delete an app from Manage Storage
Use manual management when you want to choose exactly which apps change. From the app list described above:
- Open Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage.
- Highlight the app you want to manage.
- Select the trash-button control beside that app.
- Choose Offload if you want to retain the app’s data, or choose Delete if you want to remove the app and its data.
- Read the confirmation choice on screen and confirm the action.
There is no need to delete several apps at once. If preserving data matters, handle one app at a time and select Offload explicitly. Afterward, return to the list to review the remaining entries and decide whether another app needs attention.

If the goal is simply to recover a small amount of space, offload one rarely used large app first. If the goal is to remove an app permanently because it is no longer wanted, delete it instead, accepting that its local data will be removed with it.
Manage an app directly from the Home Screen
You can also act without opening the storage list. This route is useful when you already know which app you want to change:
- On the Home Screen, highlight the app.
- Press and hold the Apple TV remote’s clickpad or touch surface.
- Choose Delete App.
- When tvOS offers the choices, select Delete or Offload.
- Confirm the choice shown on screen.
The Home Screen method uses the same distinction as Manage Storage. Selecting Delete removes the app and its data; selecting Offload removes the app while retaining its data. If you reached this menu accidentally, cancel rather than choosing an action, then verify the app name before trying again.
What happens when you download an offloaded app again?
An offloaded app is represented on the Home Screen with a download icon. Selecting the app starts its download again, provided it remains available in the App Store. Apple says the retained data is restored when the app is still available there.
That condition matters for both deliberate and automatic offloading. An app that has been removed from the App Store may not be available to download again, so offloading is not an unconditional guarantee of future access. If the app is important, consider whether keeping it installed is preferable to relying on a later re-download.

Deleting has a different recovery profile. A purchased app can be downloaded again without another purchase, but Apple does not promise that the data removed with the deletion will return. Treat Delete as a data-removal decision, not merely as a temporary way to hide an app.

Use this sequence when you want to reclaim space while minimizing the chance of losing information:
- Inspect first. Open Manage Storage and look at the app-by-app amounts before changing anything.
- Identify the objective. Decide whether you need temporary space, a smaller installed-app set, or complete removal of an app and its data.
- Prefer Offload when data matters. This removes the app while retaining its data.
- Use Delete only when the data can go. Confirm that losing the app’s local data is acceptable.
- Consider automatic management. Turn on Offload Unused Apps under Settings > Apps if you would rather let tvOS remove unused app installations while preserving their data.
- Recheck the list. Return to Manage Storage after the action to see which apps remain and whether another item is worth managing.
This approach separates the storage question from the data question. A large app may be an obvious space target, but the correct action depends on whether its data must remain available.
Troubleshooting storage-management problems
The Manage Storage option is not where expected
Apple’s current Apple TV 4K guide places the control at Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage. If your screen uses different wording or does not show the same path, the available navigation may differ by tvOS release or Apple TV hardware model. The documented path does not establish identical labels for every earlier software version or device variant.
An app shows a download icon after cleanup
A download icon indicates that the app has been offloaded. Select the app to download it again. Restoration of its retained data depends on the app still being available in the App Store.
You deleted an app and its information is missing
That result is consistent with choosing Delete: the action removes the app and its data. A purchased app can be downloaded again without repurchasing it, but the deleted data may not be restored. For future cleanup where data matters, choose Offload instead.
You are unsure which confirmation option to choose
Stop at the confirmation screen and read whether tvOS is asking you to Offload or Delete. Choose Offload when retaining data is the priority. Choose Delete only after accepting that the app’s data will be removed.
Automatic offloading did not restore an app
Automatic offloading relies on the app remaining available in the App Store. If it is no longer available, the documented restoration path may not work. The storage guide does not promise restoration for an app that cannot be downloaded again.
Version, region and hardware qualifications
The documented instructions come from Apple’s tvOS 27 Apple TV User Guide and specifically address Apple TV 4K. Apple notes that features and content are not available in every region or on every Apple TV hardware model. Menu labels and behavior on other tvOS releases or hardware variants may therefore differ.
The guide explains app storage and app cleanup. It does not establish a supported external-storage expansion method or provide an official capacity figure for this procedure, so neither should be assumed from the Manage Storage screen alone.
