How to Check and Change a Child’s Social Media Privacy Settings

The safest way to check a child’s social media privacy is to review each app together, one control at a time. For every account, check six separate areas: who can see content, who can contact the child, who can interact or discover the account, what content is recommended, whether location or activity is shared, and what parents can actually see through supervision tools.

Age, local law, country, account type and platform updates change the available options. Use the app’s current privacy or family-supervision screens rather than relying on an old menu path, and agree with your child when you will review the settings again.

Start with a joint privacy review

Tell your child that the purpose is to reduce unwanted contact and accidental oversharing, not to conduct a secret inspection. Ask the child to open each app and explain what they think a setting does. You can then make the change together and record any decision that needs revisiting.

  1. List the accounts actually used. Include secondary profiles, gaming-linked accounts, group-chat accounts and accounts on an old phone or tablet.
  2. Confirm the account holder’s age and type. A child account, teen account, supervised account and ordinary adult account can expose different controls. Regional age thresholds and laws also matter.
  3. Update the app and sign in on the child’s device. Labels and feature locations change; an outdated app can hide a control or show a different default.
  4. Review the six privacy areas below. Do not stop after switching a profile to private.
  5. Agree on exceptions and a review date. Recheck after a significant app update, when the child starts using a new feature, or when their age changes the account’s protections.

Use calm, specific questions: “Who can send you a message?”, “Can a stranger find you through your phone contacts?”, and “Which friends can see your location?” This makes the review a practical safety plan rather than a list of unexplained restrictions.

The six controls to check in every app

1. Account and post audience

Find whether the account is public or private, then inspect audiences for posts, stories, short videos, live streams, profile details and follower or following lists. A private account does not automatically make every item private: a public profile field, a live broadcast, a tagged post or a shared link may still reveal information.

2. Contact permissions

Check who may send direct messages, message requests, friend or follow requests, group invitations and voice or video calls. Restrict unknown adults and strangers where the app allows it. Review separate settings for contacts, mutual connections and people who have the child’s phone number.

3. Interaction and discovery

Review who can comment, mention, tag, reply, duet, stitch, remix, download or otherwise reuse the child’s content. Turn off contact syncing or account suggestions if the child should not be discoverable through a phone book, email address, linked account or nearby-user feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Content and recommendations

Look for age-based content levels, sensitive-content filters, restricted modes, blocked words, channel or account blocks, and controls over recommendation history. Feed controls reduce exposure; they do not guarantee that every unsuitable post will be filtered.

5. Location and activity

Check live location, map location, place alerts, location stickers and location metadata. Confirm exactly which contacts can see a location and whether sharing expires. Also review watch, search, viewing and activity history, including whether a parent account can manage or see it.

6. Safety actions and supervision

Open blocked and reported-account lists, verify the in-app reporting route, and identify any linked parent or guardian account. Read the supervision description so you know what the parent can view, what the parent can change and what remains private. Supervision is not the same as access to message contents.

Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Meta Family Center

What Teen Accounts and Family Center provide

Meta says supervised accounts on Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook and Messenger can be managed together in Family Center. Its Teen Account protections include automatic privacy settings, limits on who can contact a teen, content controls and time controls. Parents should open the current account’s Teen Account status and Family Center because availability and settings differ by country and account.

Meta’s May 12, 2026 announcement says parents can view general topics shaping a teen’s Instagram algorithm. Some notification features were planned only for select markets, so do not assume every Family Center account has the same view. Meta’s reviewed help material does not provide one current, universal menu-by-menu path for every privacy setting; use the live in-app help after opening the relevant account and Family Center.

Approval for younger teens

In a September 2025 update, Meta said teens under 16 need parental or guardian approval to change Teen Account settings. This does not mean every country or account presents the same approval screen. Check the child’s age band, region and linked supervision status before relying on that rule.

How to review the account

  1. Open the child’s Instagram or other Meta account and confirm whether it is identified as a Teen Account.
  2. Open Family Center and verify that the correct parent or guardian account is linked.
  3. Review audience, contact, content and time controls, then inspect any algorithm-topic or notification view that the account offers.
  4. Ask the child to show profile visibility, message requests, mentions, tags, comments, story audience and location-related settings in the app’s current privacy screens.
  5. Check blocked and reported accounts and agree how the family will handle a new unwanted contact.

Meta reported at least 54 million active Teen Accounts globally and said 97% of teens aged 13–15 elected to remain in the protections. Those figures are company-reported, published in 2025, and are not independent measurements; Meta’s update dated April 21, 2025 places the rollout in the context of a September 2024 start.

Dr. Michael Rich, director and founder of Boston Children’s Hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab, told Meta: “By engaging parents as co-learners with their children, we can support their parenting in the digital ecosystem in ways consistent with their parenting in the physical world, setting their children up for long-term physical, mental, and social wellness.” Treat this as a comment in Meta’s announcement, not as a guarantee that a particular setting prevents harm.

TikTok privacy and safety settings

TikTok states that age and local laws affect privacy defaults and feature availability for users under 18. In the child’s account privacy and safety settings, review:

  • Account privacy and who can view posts or Stories.
  • Account suggestions and whether the profile can be recommended through contacts or connections.
  • Video downloads, comments, direct messages and message requests.
  • Duet, Stitch, tagging, mentions and other reuse or interaction controls.
  • Content and recommendation restrictions that are available for the child’s age.

Family Pairing can affect how a teen changes settings. Check whether a parent or guardian account is linked before assuming the child can alter a control independently. TikTok’s official under-18 guidance lists the controls but does not expose one complete, current Family Pairing setup sequence, so follow the labels shown in the live app rather than an older tutorial.

Snapchat Family Center: useful visibility without message contents

What parents can see

Snapchat Family Center shows a parent the child’s existing and new friends and recent conversations without showing message contents. Snapchat says parents can see the five most recent conversations and, through “View All Recents,” conversations from the last seven days. It also lists active group-chat members.

Family Center can provide controls or information for limiting sensitive content, stopping My AI from replying, viewing selected privacy settings such as public profile and location sharing, reporting accounts and requesting the teen’s location when location sharing is enabled. Place Alerts may notify a parent when the teen arrives at or leaves a selected location.

How to find Family Center

  1. Open the child’s profile and look under My Friends.
  2. If it is not visible, use Snapchat search terms such as “family,” “safety” or “parent.”
  3. Alternatively, open Settings, then App & Privacy, and look for Family Center.

Location features are optional. Decide together whether sharing is appropriate, which people may receive it and when it should expire. Do not tell a child that Family Center lets a parent read Snapchat messages; Snapchat explicitly says message contents are not shown.

YouTube and Google family controls

Supervised child accounts

For a child under 13, or under the applicable age in the region, Google describes parent-managed YouTube controls through Family Center or Family Link. Parents can choose content levels, block channels, manage watch or search history and handle other account settings. YouTube Kids is a separate option; changing a supervised account does not automatically change every account or device the child can access.

Confirm which Google account is signed in on each device, then verify that the intended parent account is managing supervision. If the child can switch accounts, the same content controls may not follow them.

Teen supervision

YouTube’s teen supervision links the parent and teen accounts through Family Center. Parents can view channel activity, including counts of public, private and unlisted videos, live streams, comments and subscriptions. They can manage notification emails, set a daily Shorts limit and set take-a-break or bedtime reminders. The teen can see the linked parent, and either the parent or teen can turn off supervision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Android, YouTube lists the path as You > Settings > Family Center for teen features. Labels can vary by device. Open the linked account and verify what is visible before promising a particular report or reminder.

Use Google’s current help pages: Teen supervision features in Family Center, Parental controls & settings for supervised kid accounts on YouTube, and Set up a supervised teen account.

What parental supervision can—and cannot—do

Supervision tools are dashboards and controls, not a universal window into a child’s private life. Across these platforms, parents may see settings, contacts, activity summaries, recommendations or reports, but the scope differs sharply:

  • Snapchat Family Center does not show message contents.
  • YouTube teen supervision reports channel activity and limits, while either linked party can turn supervision off.
  • Meta Family Center features depend on the linked account, age, region and rollout; some algorithm-topic notifications are limited to select markets.
  • TikTok Family Pairing can affect setting changes, but the available controls depend on age and local rules.

Explain these boundaries to the child. A parent who promises to read every message may create false reassurance; a child who believes every post is invisible to parents may take unnecessary risks. Agree on when a parent will intervene—for example, after a credible threat, suspected exploitation, self-harm concern or persistent unwanted contact—and use the platform’s reporting route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the first review: maintenance and troubleshooting

When a setting is missing

  • Check the account’s age, country and account type; those variables can remove or rename controls.
  • Confirm that the app is updated and that the correct account is open.
  • Look for a linked parent account, Family Center, Family Link or Family Pairing relationship that governs the setting.
  • Read the platform’s current help page from inside the app; old screenshots often show retired labels.

When a child can still be contacted or found

  1. Recheck direct-message, request and group-invitation settings separately; one permissive channel can bypass another.
  2. Disable account suggestions and contact syncing, then review public profile fields, tags and mentions.
  3. Block and report the account using the platform’s safety tools, and save evidence if there is harassment, extortion or a threat.
  4. Tell a trusted adult or appropriate emergency service when there is immediate danger; app settings alone cannot resolve an urgent safety situation.

Set a repeat schedule

Put a short review on the family calendar after major app updates and whenever the child adopts a new feature such as live video, public Stories, location maps or group chats. Ask the same six questions each time, and remove old devices or accounts the child no longer uses.

Limits of privacy settings

No single toggle guarantees complete privacy or safety. A follower can copy a screenshot, a friend can forward a message, and a public location clue can be inferred from a photo even when map sharing is off. Built-in controls work best alongside private conversations about unknown contacts, consent before sharing someone else’s image, strong account recovery methods and a clear plan for reporting harm.

Keep the child involved in decisions that affect ordinary social use, while reserving stronger restrictions for a specific, explained risk. This approach makes it more likely that the child will tell you when a setting fails or an unfamiliar person makes contact.
