How to Check an SSD’s Real Capacity in Windows, macOS, and Linux

To check an SSD’s real capacity, first inspect the whole physical device—not just a partition or the free space shown by a file manager. Windows, macOS, and Linux can report the size that the drive presents to the operating system. That confirms the device’s reported capacity, but it does not prove that every advertised byte can reliably store data. A suspicious drive needs a separate full-capacity write-and-read verification.

The safe order is: identify the physical disk, compare its reported byte size with the manufacturer’s decimal rating, account for partitioning and formatting, then run a destructive or space-consuming write/read test only after backing up the target.

What “real capacity” means

An SSD exposes several different storage objects, and each can show a different number. Confusing them is the most common reason a genuine drive appears to be “missing” capacity.

Object What it represents What its number can tell you
Physical disk The complete SSD device presented by its controller The operating system’s reported device size
Partition A region carved from the physical disk Why a volume can be smaller than the disk
Formatted volume A file system, such as NTFS, APFS, or another format, inside a partition Space available to that file system
Free space Unused space remaining in a formatted volume How much room is left, not the SSD’s capacity

A device listing answers, “What size does this SSD report?” It does not answer, “Can the entire reported range retain data after it is written and read back?” Counterfeit flash storage can claim a larger size than its memory really provides. Data written beyond the genuine limit may be lost, and the file system can be damaged.

Before measuring: protect your data

A listing command is normally read-only. A full-capacity test is different: it writes test data across the target and reads that data back. On a suspect drive, writing past the genuine limit can overwrite existing files or corrupt the file system.

  • Back up every file on the SSD before a fill-and-verify test.
  • Confirm the target by its physical device identity and connection, not merely by a familiar drive letter or volume name.
  • Disconnect or unmount other removable drives when practical so the wrong target is harder to select.
  • Expect a large SSD test to take a long time; do not interrupt it unless you accept an incomplete result.
  • Do not use commands such as clean, formatting commands, partition creation, or deletion commands when you only intend to inspect capacity.

Check the reported capacity in Windows

Use DiskPart to list physical disks

  1. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt. Administrative elevation is prudent because DiskPart is a disk-management utility.
  2. Enter diskpart.
  3. At the DiskPart prompt, enter list disk.
  4. Record the disk number and the size shown for the SSD. Compare it with the other disks and with the SSD’s label or connection.
  5. Enter exit when finished.

DiskPart operates on the object that currently has focus. Selecting a disk is unnecessary for a simple list disk inspection. If you do select one for a later query, verify the number and size immediately before running any command. Never continue with a modifying command merely because a disk number looks familiar.

The size in list disk is the whole device as reported by the controller. It is not necessarily the size of a partition or the free space available in File Explorer. A suspiciously large value is a reason to verify the media, not proof that it is genuine.

Use Fsutil for volume and file-system detail

fsutil fsinfo can query drive, volume, and NTFS-specific information. An NTFS query can expose details such as sector counts, total clusters, and free clusters. For example, an NTFS volume query can be made with fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo C:, replacing C: with the appropriate volume.

This output describes the selected volume and its file system. It can explain why a formatted volume has less space than the physical disk, but it is not an independent proof of the SSD’s physical capacity. Use DiskPart’s whole-disk row for the device-level figure, then use fsutil to understand the volume layered on top of it.

Run a full write-and-read check on Windows

The H2testw project describes a test that fills storage with test data and verifies the data. It is useful for exposing a device that reports more capacity than it can actually retain, but it is not a quick read-only check.

  1. Back up the target and ensure the target contains no files that must survive.
  2. Open H2testw and select the intended drive or test area. Check the selected path against the disk you identified with DiskPart.
  3. Start the write phase and allow the program to fill the selected space.
  4. Run or allow the verification phase to read the test data back.
  5. Save the result, including the amount successfully written and verified and any errors or missing data.

The project README warns that its Windows version is experimental and may not accurately estimate the result. Treat a clean result as evidence from that test under its conditions, not as a guarantee for every future workload. A failure, unreadable region, or amount substantially below the reported size is a serious warning. Stop using the drive for important data, preserve the result, and investigate the device or seller.

Check the reported capacity in macOS

Inspect the device and block size with Disk Utility’s command-line tool

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run diskutil info -all.
  3. Find the physical SSD entry, then distinguish it from APFS containers, volumes, and partitions listed beneath or alongside it.
  4. Note the device size and the reported device block size. The block size may be 512 bytes or 4K (4,096 bytes), depending on the device.

Block size is useful when interpreting sector counts and storage tools, but it does not establish that every advertised byte is physically usable. A 4K block report is not a capacity-authentication result, and neither is the size of an individual macOS volume.

What macOS can and cannot establish here

diskutil info -all gives you the system-reported device and volume information needed for an initial comparison. It does not, by itself, perform a full write-and-read capacity test. There is no sufficiently authoritative, current macOS procedure established here that would justify claiming that this command alone verifies all advertised capacity.

For a suspect SSD, use a full-capacity write/read utility that is compatible with your macOS version and interface, following that utility’s documented target-selection and verification steps. Treat it as a destructive or space-consuming operation: back up first, select the physical SSD deliberately, and do not assume that a volume-level test covers unallocated space outside that volume.

Check the reported capacity in Linux

List block devices with lsblk

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Run lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,TYPE,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINTS to show device names, reported sizes, device types, file-system types, and mount points.
  3. Locate the row whose TYPE is the whole disk, commonly shown as disk. Do not mistake indented partition rows, commonly shown as part, for the entire SSD.
  4. Record the whole-disk size and compare it with the advertised decimal capacity.

lsblk reports block-device information supplied by Linux and the device. It does not validate whether a suspiciously large device can physically store data throughout that range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use structured output when recording results

For scripts or repeatable evidence, lsblk supports JSON and raw output modes. JSON output is useful when you need to capture selected columns without parsing a human-formatted table; raw output is useful when predictable separators matter. Regardless of format, retain the whole-disk row and keep partition rows separate in your notes.

Verify actual storage behavior

Linux’s device listing is the first stage, not an authenticity test. A genuine full-capacity check must write test data over the claimed range and read it back. Choose a current utility that explicitly supports your Linux distribution and the SSD’s interface, and follow its documentation for a whole-device or dedicated empty-volume test. Do not run such a test on a mounted volume containing needed files. A reported size that looks correct in lsblk can still fail this behavioral test.

Why the number is smaller than the label

SSD manufacturers use decimal capacity units. As Seagate’s SeaTools SSD CLI User Guide states: “one gigabyte, or GB, equals one billion bytes and one terabyte, or TB, equals one trillion bytes.” Operating systems and utilities may display values using binary units such as GiB and TiB, or may label a decimal-byte calculation with a different convention. Comparing a manufacturer’s decimal TB directly with a file manager’s displayed GiB can therefore make a normal drive appear smaller.

Formatting also consumes space. Partition tables, file-system metadata, reserved areas, over-provisioning, and other drive functions reduce the space available for ordinary files. Seagate notes that some listed capacity is used for formatting and other functions and is unavailable for data storage.

Comparison What it answers What it does not answer
Advertised decimal bytes vs whole-device bytes Whether the label and device-level report are broadly comparable Whether the flash can retain data across the range
Whole disk vs partition How much of the device has been allocated to that partition Whether unallocated space is physically genuine
Partition vs formatted volume How formatting and file-system structures affect usable space Whether the controller is falsely reporting capacity
Reported size vs write/read-verified size Whether the tested range accepted and returned data Performance, endurance, or long-term reliability outside the test

A modest reduction from the label is expected when units and formatting are accounted for. A drive that reports the advertised size but loses data when the upper range is written is not validated by that report.

How to interpret a full-capacity test

A successful result

If the test writes and reads the selected capacity without errors, it demonstrates that the tested range behaved correctly under that test. Keep the test conditions and result with your purchase records. This is stronger evidence than a device listing because it exercises storage rather than merely reading the controller’s claimed geometry.

A failure near the end of the drive

Errors that begin after a repeatable amount of data often indicate that the usable memory is smaller than the reported capacity, especially when the device was sold as a much larger model. Do not keep important data on it. Back up anything still readable, avoid further writes that could worsen corruption, and seek a return or replacement through the seller or manufacturer.

File-system corruption during testing

The H2testw README specifically warns that a fake drive’s file system may be damaged once writing exceeds its actual capacity. If the test causes corruption, stop, disconnect the drive safely, and restore data from your backup rather than attempting ordinary repairs on the suspect media first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An inconclusive or interrupted test

An interrupted run does not prove the drive is bad or good. Record how much was written and which phase stopped, then repeat only after checking power, cable, enclosure, available space, and the selected target. A partial test covers only the range it actually wrote and verified.

Choosing the right level of checking

Method Coverage Time and risk Best use
DiskPart, lsblk, or diskutil info -all Device and volume information reported by the system Fast and normally non-destructive Identify the SSD and explain size differences
File-system detail such as fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo One selected volume’s sectors, clusters, and free space Fast and non-destructive Understand formatting and allocation
Full write-and-read verification The range actually filled and checked Can take many hours and can overwrite or corrupt data Investigate suspected counterfeit or unusable capacity

There is no meaningful single number called “the real capacity” until you specify which of these measurements you mean: decimal bytes on the label, device bytes reported by the controller, formatted volume capacity, or bytes that survived a write/read test.

Practical troubleshooting

The volume is much smaller than the disk

Check for unallocated space and additional partitions using the platform’s disk information. A smaller volume can be an ordinary partitioning choice. Do not enlarge, delete, or recreate partitions merely to make the displayed number match the label unless the data is backed up and you deliberately intend to change the layout.

The operating system reports a smaller device than the label

First compare decimal bytes with the operating system’s unit convention. Then verify that you are looking at the whole physical SSD rather than an enclosure-created volume, a partition, or a capacity-limited adapter. If the discrepancy remains large after those checks, run a full write/read test on an empty, backed-up target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listing looks normal but files disappear

That pattern is consistent with a device that reports capacity it cannot retain. Stop writing important data and perform a controlled full-capacity verification. Preserve logs and screenshots, because a normal list disk, lsblk, or diskutil size does not disprove a counterfeit device.

The test cannot access the entire SSD

Check whether the utility is testing a mounted volume instead of the whole device, whether another program has the volume open, and whether the enclosure or adapter exposes the full disk. Do not bypass an access warning by selecting an adjacent disk. Reconnect the SSD and re-identify it before trying again.

Capacity-check checklist

  • Identify the physical disk and record its device-level size.
  • Keep partition, formatted-volume, and free-space figures separate.
  • Compare decimal advertised bytes with the same kind of byte measurement.
  • Account for formatting and other functions before judging a normal reduction.
  • Use diskpart list disk on Windows, lsblk on Linux, and diskutil info -all on macOS for reported information.
  • Do not treat any listing command as proof of physically usable capacity.
  • Back up data before a full write/read test and verify the target twice.
  • Interpret a failed or corrupted full-capacity test as a reason to stop trusting the SSD with important data.
