How to Check an SSD’s Real Capacity and Health

To check an SSD, first confirm the model and reported capacity in your operating system, then inspect its SMART/health data. If you need to know whether the drive can actually store and return data across its available space, run a separate write-and-read capacity test. A reported size or a “PASSED” health status alone does not verify every location on the drive.

What each check can tell you

Check What it tells you What it does not establish
Operating-system capacity display The capacity the drive reports to the computer, or the size of a particular formatted volume. Whether data can be stored and read reliably throughout the reported space.
SMART or NVMe health data Health and usage fields reported by the drive, such as warnings, spare capacity, and media errors. That every data location has been checked or that the SSD cannot fail.
Full-space write/read test Whether the tested area can hold test data and return it when read back. Future reliability or the condition of areas the test did not cover.

Confirm the SSD and its reported capacity

Before running any test, identify the physical drive by its model and connection type—SATA or NVMe—and make sure you have selected the intended device. Compare its reported capacity with the label using the units shown by your operating system. Windows’ physical-device structure defines its capacity field in 1024-byte units, but that does not establish a universal conversion rule for every operating system or display.

A volume may show less capacity than the physical drive because it represents a formatted partition, not necessarily the entire device. Check the physical disk as well as any individual volume before concluding that the SSD is undersized.

Verify whether the reported space is usable

A capacity display is not a write-and-read test. For a more direct check, the free F3 project documents a f3write and f3read workflow: it writes test data into available filesystem space and then reads it back to check whether the data is retrievable. F3’s documentation illustrates the problem with a device claiming 128 GB but having less than 8 GB of real capacity; that is an example, not a statistic about how common counterfeit or faulty drives are. Before you run a test

  • Back up important files. A space-filling test writes data and can displace existing files if the target volume does not have enough free space.
  • Check the selected drive and volume carefully. Run the test only on the intended device, and do not use a volume where its test files could crowd out data you need.
  • Allow time for the write and read phases, especially when testing a large drive or using a slower connection.

A passing result applies to the space exercised during that run and to the drive and connection as tested. It is not a guarantee of indefinite reliability.

Read the SSD’s health information

For an NVMe SSD, the SMART/Health Information log can expose fields including critical warnings, available spare and its threshold, percentage used, data units written, power-on hours, unsafe shutdowns, and media errors. Microsoft documents these fields in the NVMe context and describes the health log as controller-level information. Microsoft: NVMe Health Information Log

The smartctl utility can report the health status and attributes exposed by supported drives; its -H option displays health status, and it supports self-tests on compatible devices. What appears and what individual attributes mean can vary by model, protocol, controller, and connection bridge. A “PASSED” result is the device’s reported assessment, not proof that all storage locations were verified or that failure is impossible. smartctl documentation

  • SLIM ALUMINUM BUILD: Ultra-slim aluminum case with an ABS frame, with a thermal pad to move heat off the drive. Light enough to live in a laptop bag, solid enough to survive it.
  • IN THE BOX: Enclosure, 8in Type-C to Type-C cable and user manual. Works with Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.5 or later and Linux. Register on the manufacturer's website for extended warranty service.

How to interpret important NVMe fields

  • Critical warning: Review any reported warning rather than relying on an overall status label alone.
  • Available spare and threshold: Compare the reported spare level with its threshold; the fields describe reserve capacity and the drive’s reported threshold.
  • Percentage used: This is a vendor-specific estimate of endurance consumed, not a literal countdown of remaining life. Microsoft says a value of 100 means estimated endurance has been consumed, but may not indicate subsystem failure; the value can exceed 100. Microsoft’s NVMe health-log field definitions
  • Media errors: Check whether the drive reports errors, and consider the count alongside other health fields and the device’s behavior.
  • Data units written, power-on hours, and unsafe shutdowns: These provide usage context; none is a standalone pass/fail verdict.

Checking an SSD removed from a computer

A USB NVMe enclosure can connect a removed M.2 NVMe SSD to a computer for inspection, but check that it supports both the drive’s form factor and NVMe protocol. Do not assume every USB-to-NVMe bridge passes through the commands needed to read SMART/health data. Confirm that your chosen utility can see the health information through that enclosure before relying on it. An enclosure is optional when the SSD is already installed in the computer.

Choose the check that matches your concern

  • “Is this the capacity the computer sees?” Check the physical drive’s reported capacity and confirm its model.
  • “Can it store and return data throughout its available space?” Back up first, then use a write/read test such as F3 on the intended volume.
  • “Does the drive report a health concern?” Inspect its SMART or NVMe health fields, not just a single overall label.
  • “Why can’t my utility show health data?” Check compatibility with the drive protocol, controller, operating system, and—if connected externally—the USB bridge.
