Check your SSD with a tool that supports its interface, then interpret several health indicators together. Windows’ built-in storage-health view reports on NVMe drives, not SATA SSDs; for SATA or model-specific detail, use the drive maker’s utility or a compatible SMART tool. A health percentage is an endurance estimate—not a promise of how long the drive will keep working.
1. Identify your SSD and its connection
Before choosing a diagnostic tool, find the drive’s manufacturer, model and interface. The interface matters: an NVMe SSD can expose a different health log from a SATA SSD, and a USB enclosure or storage controller may prevent a tool from seeing the drive’s SMART data.

- Check the drive’s model in your computer’s system information, storage settings or device documentation.
- Look up the model on the manufacturer’s support site to confirm whether it is NVMe or SATA and which utility supports it.
- If the drive is connected through an adapter or enclosure, bear in mind that the connection may affect which health information is available.
2. Choose a tool that can see the drive
| Method | Drive coverage | When it is useful | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows storage-health view | NVMe SSDs | Quickly checking supported health attributes in Windows. | Microsoft says this view does not monitor SATA SSDs or HDDs. Microsoft Support |
| Drive manufacturer’s utility | Depends on the specific drive and utility | Viewing model-specific readings and guidance. Intel documents the Intel Memory and Storage Tool for its SSDs; SanDisk documents its Dashboard for internal SSD health and endurance checks. Intel Support; SanDisk Support | Do not assume a utility supports every drive, operating system or connection. Verify compatibility with the manufacturer. |
| smartmontools | Cross-platform, subject to drive and connection support | Checking SMART data on Linux, macOS, Windows or FreeBSD when another view is unavailable. smartmontools project | The drive, operating system, controller and connection must expose the required data; available fields can vary. |
3. Check the health report
In Windows, check an NVMe drive
Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes, select the NVMe disk, then open Properties and review the drive-health information shown. The precise fields available depend on the drive and software path. Windows’ health view covers NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or HDDs. Microsoft’s storage-device guidance

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →With a manufacturer utility
Install the current utility that the manufacturer lists for your exact SSD model and system, then select the drive and review its health or endurance page. For example, Intel documents its Memory and Storage Tool for Intel SSDs, while SanDisk documents Dashboard checks for internal SSDs. Follow the maker’s current compatibility instructions rather than assuming a tool works with every product.

With smartmontools
Use smartmontools if you need a cross-platform SMART view or the manufacturer’s utility is unavailable. Consult the project’s documentation for installation and commands appropriate to your operating system and drive. If the tool cannot identify the drive or reports that SMART data is unavailable, the controller, adapter or connection may not be passing that information through.
4. Interpret the readings together
NVMe drives report a SMART/Health log. Depending on the device and the utility, it can include critical warnings, available spare, temperature, usage and error-related fields. Record the model and tool used when comparing readings, because labels and interpretation can differ. Microsoft Learn: NVME_HEALTH_INFO_LOG

- Suitable for 2.5” SATA/SSD;Supports Standard Notebook 2.5″ SATA and SATA II Hard drives
- Optimized for SSD, Supports UASP SATA III,Backwards-Compatible with USB 2.0 or 1.1
- Hot-swappable, plug and play, no drivers needed
- Operating System:Supported Operating Systems:Mac,Windows;Supported Windows Versions :Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista, Windows XP; Supported Mac Versions: Mac OS X and Higher
- Critical Warning: Check whether the drive reports a warning and what condition it identifies. Microsoft describes warnings associated with low spare capacity, degraded reliability or read-only operation.
- Percentage Used: This is a vendor-specific estimate of endurance consumed, based on actual use and the manufacturer’s prediction of subsystem life. Intel says the counter starts at 0 and increases with use; it is not a calendar-life countdown. Microsoft Learn; Intel Support
- Available Spare: The NVMe health log gives this as a normalized percentage from 0 to 100. Read it alongside any warning or the drive maker’s model-specific guidance; it is not a measure of years remaining. Microsoft Learn
- Temperature: Review it in the context of the drive’s operating guidance. The health log may show a temperature, but its presence alone does not establish whether a particular reading is safe for your model.
- Media errors and error-log information: Review these where the utility exposes them. Microsoft associates degraded reliability with significant media-related errors or an internal subsystem error. Microsoft Support
5. Understand what “remaining lifespan” can—and cannot—tell you
Percentage Used estimates how much of the drive’s endurance the manufacturer believes has been consumed. It does not directly report time left. A low value does not rule out a failure caused by another problem, and a high value does not provide a precise failure date. Do not convert the number into years without a model-specific basis and a clearly qualified method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA “healthy” or “passed” result is also not a guarantee that the drive will continue working for any particular period. Treat the report as one diagnostic signal, not a forecast, and keep independent backups of important files even when all displayed readings look normal.

No request for extra power supply.
6. Act promptly on a warning
If the report indicates degraded reliability, low available spare or read-only operation, protect important data and investigate promptly. Microsoft says degraded reliability can reflect significant media-related errors or an internal subsystem error. These warning conditions call for attention, but they are fault indicators—not calibrated countdowns to total failure. Microsoft’s guidance for critical storage warnings
