How to Check an NFL Player’s Practice Participation and Injury Status Before Kickoff

Check the NFL’s official injury report, and read the player’s practice participation and game status as separate fields. Then check the team’s inactive list close to kickoff: a midweek report is not final confirmation that a player will be available.

Where to find the official report

Open the NFL injury report and find the relevant team and player. The page includes player names, injury information, practice status and game status. Use the exact name to avoid confusing players with similar names.

How to read practice participation

The report’s practice field records how much a player participated in team practice. The NFL’s categories are:

  • Did Not Participate (DNP): The player did not practice.
  • Limited Participation: The player took part in less than 100% of the player’s normal repetitions.
  • Full Participation: The player took part in 100% of the player’s normal repetitions.

Read entries across the week as a trend: for example, moving from DNP to limited participation shows a change in practice work. It does not, on its own, establish whether the player will play or how many snaps the player will take. The NFL policy defines these categories as practice participation, not a guaranteed game workload. NFL Injury Report Policy

How to read game status

Game status is a separate field that describes the club’s anticipated availability assessment for its next game. The designations are:

  • Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will play.
  • Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate.
  • Out: The player will not play.

The former Probable designation was removed. A player who appeared on a practice report but is omitted from the Game Status Report is, under NFL policy, one the club is certain will play. The policy describes the report as an account of anticipated availability; neither a practice entry nor a game designation is a medical diagnosis or a promise about playing time. When reports are due

Reporting deadlines depend on the game’s scheduled kickoff day, so do not apply a Sunday deadline to a game played on another day. For a Sunday regular-season game in the 2026 schedule, clubs file the Game Status Report by Friday at 4 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice. The NFL’s 2026–2027 Important Dates calendar sets different designated reporting days for games on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and other days. NFL policy also requires a club to update the report if a player’s condition changes after the initial filing. Check the page for the latest report rather than relying on an earlier entry.

Check the inactive list near kickoff

The inactive list is the late pregame confirmation to check after reviewing the injury report. NFL game operations includes the exchange of clubs’ inactive lists in the 90-minute officiating meeting before kickoff. Because that confirmation comes close to the game, check the team’s list near kickoff rather than treating a practice report or an earlier game designation as the final word. A quick checking sequence

  1. Open the official report: Go to NFL.com/injuries and locate the team and player.
  2. Compare practice entries: Read DNP, limited and full participation entries across the reported days to see the practice trend.
  3. Read game status separately: Check for Questionable, Doubtful or Out; if the player appeared in a practice report but not the Game Status Report, NFL policy says the club is certain the player will play.
  4. Check timing and updates: Use the deadline for that game’s kickoff day and look for a more recent report if the player’s condition changes.
  5. Verify the inactive list near kickoff: Use it for the closest pregame confirmation of whether the player is active.
