Check the eye-drop container and carton for an expiration marking such as “EXP” and a separate lot, batch, or control number. Read both exactly as printed, then compare the product and lot with current official recall notices. If a date is unclear, packaging details conflict, or a recall may apply, stop using the drops and ask a pharmacist or clinician rather than trying to decode the markings.

Where to find the lot number and expiration date

First identify the exact product and presentation: for example, a multidose bottle or single-use vials. Then inspect both the immediate container and the outer carton, if you have it. Look for “EXP,” “Expiration,” or a printed date, and for “LOT,” “Lot,” “Batch,” or “Control.” Placement and format vary by product and package; there is no single location to expect on every eye drop.

Federal labeling rules generally address expiration dating on both the immediate container and outer package, with exceptions that include certain individually cartoned single-dose containers. The lot number is a different identifier: under federal rules, it should be capable of yielding the complete manufacturing history of the package. A product-specific example of lot and expiration markings on a blister pack is shown in an FDA-hosted label; it illustrates one presentation, not a universal placement rule.

How to check the markings against a recall

  1. Record the product details. Write down the product name and presentation, such as bottle or single-use vials, along with package size if shown.
  2. Copy the lot identifier exactly. Preserve letters and leading zeroes. Do not interpret the lot number as a date or use it to calculate an expiration date; lot identifiers and expiration dating are separate label information.
  3. Copy the expiration date as printed. Do not substitute a date inferred from the lot code or another package component.
  4. Check current official FDA recall and safety notices. Match the exact product and lot, and compare any other details the notice lists, such as expiration date or package size. For example, an FDA notice dated December 21, 2024 identified a Systane product by lot 10101 and printed expiration 2025/09. A similar product name alone is not enough to establish that a notice applies to your package.
  5. Ask a pharmacist or clinician if anything is uncertain. Do this if the print is smudged or unreadable, the bottle and carton disagree, the expiration has passed, or your lot appears in a warning. Do not use an at-home lot decoder to make a safety decision.

How to read an expiration date

Read the date in the format printed on the package. An FDA review recommends that a human-readable expiration date include a year, month, and non-zero day; it describes numeric-only dates in year-month-day order and dates using a written month as year-month-day with letters naming the month. It also notes that a year-and-month format may be used when label space is limited. This is general labeling guidance, not a brand-specific decoding key. If the package format is unclear, ask a pharmacist rather than guessing.

What the date means—and what it does not

The FDA explains that a drug’s expiration date reflects the period in which it is known to retain its strength, quality, and purity when stored according to its labeled conditions. It is not a date that can be extended by inspecting or calculating the lot number. Any extension needs a manufacturer-supported or agency-authorized process based on data.

The printed expiration date also does not establish one universal discard interval after opening. Follow the storage and after-opening instructions on the specific bottle or package insert. If those instructions are missing or unclear, consult a pharmacist.

Why eye-drop labeling and handling matter

Eye drops must be sterile to reduce infection risk, and using them in the eye bypasses some of the body’s natural defenses. The FDA advises consumers to review official alerts and warnings. Match a notice against the full product and lot details, and check the current notice because recall information can change.
