Back up the files you cannot replace before running a health check, if the drive is still readable. Then use a diagnostic supported by the drive’s manufacturer and treat the result as a warning signal—not a promise that the drive will keep working. A failed test calls for data recovery or replacement planning, not a software “repair” that claims to cure hardware failure.
1. Protect your files before testing
Copy important data to another drive or a separate location while the external drive remains accessible. Seagate advises backing up before testing and, after a SMART error, backing up as soon as possible. Seagate Support’s SMART-error guidance puts the priority plainly: “A system S.M.A.R.T. error means you should backup your data as soon as possible and maintain consistent backups.”

Do not begin by formatting the disk, running a destructive repair, or opening the enclosure. If the drive is making unusual noises, disconnecting repeatedly, or becoming unreadable, avoid repeated test attempts and prioritize getting readable files copied or seeking data-recovery help. A diagnostic is not a substitute for a backup.
2. Identify the drive and choose a supported check
Find the manufacturer and model from the drive label or your computer’s device information. If possible, determine whether the external device contains a spinning hard disk (HDD) or a solid-state drive (SSD). External USB enclosures use a bridge between the drive and computer; some bridges do not pass through the commands needed to read SMART data.

Start with the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when it supports your model and connection. Seagate’s SeaTools guide describes drive information, health monitoring, and SMART data, while noting that features can vary when used with non-Seagate drives. See the SeaTools user guide for its supported functions. A manufacturer utility may offer a basic status check, a self-test, or both; follow its on-screen descriptions and avoid any option that erases or modifies data until the files are safe.
3. Check health on your computer
Using a manufacturer utility
- Connect the external drive directly to the computer, using a supported port and a stable connection.
- Open the drive maker’s diagnostic application and select the correct external drive by model or capacity.
- Review the displayed health status and SMART attributes. If the utility offers a self-test, read its warning and choose a non-destructive test only after backing up.
- Save or note the exact result, including whether the test passed, warned, failed, or could not run.
A manufacturer tool is often the most relevant starting point, but it is not guaranteed to expose every diagnostic feature through every USB enclosure. Do not interpret an unavailable test as proof that the disk is either healthy or failed.

On a Mac: Disk Utility
Apple says Disk Utility can check supported disks. Open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, select the disk in the sidebar, and inspect its information or health status where available. If Disk Utility reports a fatal hardware error, software utilities cannot repair the underlying hardware problem; Apple advises backing up any data that can still be read. Apple’s disk-failure guidance explains what to do with that warning.

Microsoft’s cited critical-storage-warning feature monitors NVM SSDs; Microsoft says it does not monitor SATA SSDs or HDDs. Therefore, the absence of a Windows critical warning is not a clean bill of health for an external HDD. This limitation applies to that warning feature, not to every Windows disk utility. Microsoft explains the warning’s scope here.

4. Understand what the result means
- Pass: The tool did not detect a problem in the checks it performed. It cannot guarantee the drive will not fail later, so keep a separate backup.
- Warning or SMART error: Treat this as a reason to secure the data promptly and check the manufacturer’s support guidance. Seagate recommends backup after a SMART error and says the underlying problem cannot be repaired with software; a diagnostic error means the drive needs replacement. Read Seagate’s guidance.
- Failed test: Preserve the data and check warranty or service options. Do not rely on repair software to fix a hardware fault.
- Unable to test or SMART unavailable: This is an inconclusive result, not a health assessment. USB interfaces can block SMART commands, and permissions or the tool itself can also prevent a check from running. Seagate’s openSeaChest guide discusses these limitations.
SMART is a useful warning layer, not a universal remaining-life countdown. Manufacturers define attributes and thresholds, and raw values can mean different things across brands and models. Avoid diagnosing a drive from one raw SMART number without model-specific interpretation. Western Digital explains the vendor-specific nature of SMART data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. If the result is inconclusive or concerning
When SMART data is missing
- Check that the diagnostic tool supports the drive’s make and model.
- Try a supported USB port or connection and verify that the application has the permissions it needs.
- If the same USB enclosure still blocks the check, do not assume the drive is healthy or faulty solely because SMART is unavailable. Ask the manufacturer or service provider which connection and test are supported for that model.
A cable or enclosure change may help with access in some cases, but it is not a universal fix and does not establish the drive’s health.

When a test fails or reports an error
Make sure the most important readable files are backed up, then consult the manufacturer about warranty or service and plan for replacement if indicated. If files are no longer readable and matter more than the drive itself, stop experimenting with repair tools and consider professional recovery before further use.

Run a supported check when you have a reason to inspect the drive, such as an operating-system warning or a change in how it behaves, but do not rely on periodic checks as protection against every failure. Keep another copy of important data on a separate device or location. For Seagate Backup Plus drives, the manual instructs users to back up before running hard-drive tests. See the Backup Plus manual.
