How to Check an EV Battery Warranty—and What Battery Degradation It Covers

To check an EV battery warranty, find the warranty booklet for the exact make, model, model year, and original sales market, then verify its terms and remaining coverage against the vehicle identification number (VIN) with the manufacturer or an authorized dealer. Look for the battery-capacity threshold, time and mileage limits, approved test method, transfer rules, exclusions, and stated remedy. There is no single degradation percentage that applies to every EV: 70% appears in several examples, but it is not a universal entitlement.

How to check an EV battery warranty

  1. Identify the vehicle. Record its make, model, model year, trim or battery variant, original country of sale, registration or in-service date, odometer reading, and VIN. The original market matters because warranty terms differ by jurisdiction.
  2. Find the applicable warranty booklet. Use the manufacturer’s owner portal or the documents supplied with the car. Search for terms such as “high-voltage battery,” “traction battery,” “battery energy content,” or “capacity loss.” A manufacturer’s general warranty page may summarize coverage, but the vehicle-specific booklet is the place to check the actual conditions. Tesla lists terms by model, Renault UK varies terms by model family, and Volkswagen UK distinguishes BEV and PHEV provisions. Tesla warranty terms, Renault UK warranty, Volkswagen UK warranties.
  3. Record the threshold and expiry. Note the minimum capacity or state-of-health threshold, the warranty start date, and the time and mileage limits. Check which limit ends coverage first. A battery can be below the stated threshold but outside the coverage period, or within the period without meeting the threshold.
  4. Ask how an eligible test is performed. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer and ask which diagnostic procedure determines capacity for your exact vehicle, who is authorized to conduct it, and whether you need an appointment or must meet pre-test conditions. Ford’s US terms give the measurement method to Ford and specify an authorized EV Certified Ford Dealer; Volkswagen Singapore specifies measurement by a manufacturer-authorized repairer. Ford warranty coverage, Volkswagen Singapore warranty.
  5. Confirm status by VIN. Ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer to confirm in writing the warranty’s start date, whether it transfers to the current owner, and how much time and mileage remain. This is especially important for an imported or used vehicle.
  6. Read transfer terms, exclusions, and remedies. Check for notice or registration requirements and clauses about charging, use, storage, modifications, servicing, and maintenance. Ask what the contract allows if a claim qualifies: repair, module or pack replacement, remanufactured parts, or another remedy. Keep the booklet, service history, relevant charging or maintenance records, diagnostic results, and written responses together.

What battery degradation does a warranty cover?

A battery-capacity warranty is generally a threshold-based promise, not a guarantee that the battery will retain 100% of its original capacity. Capacity can decline with time and use; the warranty defines when that loss becomes excessive during a specified coverage period and what the manufacturer may do about it. The threshold, definition, test, and remedy depend on the contract.

For example, Ford’s US owner-manual terms describe coverage for excessive capacity loss for eight years or 99,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever comes first. Under those terms, loss below 70% of beginning-of-life capacity is considered excessive when an authorized EV Certified Ford Dealer determines it using Ford’s method. Ford warranty coverage. GMC’s 2026 US booklet also sets a below-70% threshold for battery deterioration under its stated conditions, with coverage for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Its booklet lists abuse, neglect, improper maintenance, and unapproved modifications among potential grounds for denial. 2026 GMC Electric Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Those are examples, not a rule for all EVs. Tesla’s US listings specify a 70% minimum retention but vary the time and mileage limits by model; Renault UK terms give several named models eight years or 100,000 miles and certain 33 kWh Kangoo and Master batteries five years or 62,000 miles, with a cited 70% minimum capacity. Renault says the remedy is at its discretion. Check the exact model, trim, registration-date terms, and market rather than applying another vehicle’s figure. Regional and model-year rules are not interchangeable

California’s regulatory discussion describes a minimum eight-year/100,000-mile warranty and 70% state of health for model years 2026–2030, then 75% for model year 2031 and later under the rule discussed. That is a California- and model-year-specific regulatory example, not a global warranty standard. California Air Resources Board, Appendix F-10.

Hyundai Motor America’s warranty summary lists 10 years or 100,000 miles for hybrid/electric battery coverage, but directs owners to the applicable warranty and owner’s manual for details. A summary duration alone does not establish the capacity threshold, test, or every condition for a specific car. Hyundai warranty summary.

For 24V testing, choose BA101 PRO

What counts as proof of battery capacity?

A dashboard range estimate, one state-of-charge reading, or an unaffiliated app result should not be treated as conclusive evidence of battery health or warranty eligibility. Range estimates are not the same thing as a warranty-grade capacity measurement, and the manufacturer’s required procedure controls where the terms specify one. Ask the authorized provider what report it will issue and how the result is assessed against the contract’s threshold.

Terms can vary even within one manufacturer’s range: Tesla’s listed limits differ by model, Renault varies by model family, and the cited UK, US, and Singapore terms are not interchangeable. Tata’s India terms also illustrate why transfer conditions deserve a close read: they require subsequent owners to notify the company for certain lifetime high-voltage battery coverage. Why the remedy matters as much as the threshold

Meeting a capacity threshold does not automatically mean the manufacturer must install a new battery pack. The contract controls the remedy. Ford includes reconditioned or remanufactured parts among possible remedies, while Renault’s cited terms leave the choice of repair or replacement to Renault’s discretion. Read the relevant clause and ask the dealer to explain the available remedy for the specific vehicle and claim.
