Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Start with Google Play Protect, then review every installed app you do not recognize or knowingly authorize. Confirm the app’s name, publisher, installation source and purpose before removing it. Uninstall through Google Play or Android Settings, install pending system and security updates, and run Google Account Security Checkup. If suspicious behavior continues or an app cannot be removed, contact the phone maker; a reset may ultimately be necessary.
Remote access is a capability, not a diagnosis. A legitimate support tool, employer-management client, accessibility service or family-administered device can control parts of a phone with the owner’s permission. Treat an app as suspicious when its access is unexplained, its identity does not match what you installed, or its behavior conflicts with the phone’s intended use—not simply because it can connect remotely.

What counts as a remote-access app on Android?
“Remote-access app” can describe several different things:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Remote support: software that lets a trusted technician help you after you request assistance.
- Enterprise or school management: a management client installed because an organization controls the phone.
- Accessibility or administration tools: services with broad abilities that may be legitimate when you deliberately enabled them.
- Monitoring software: an app intended to supervise a device under disclosed, authorized conditions.
- Malicious software: code that uses remote control, surveillance or other access without informed consent.
Google Play’s malware policy defines a backdoor as “Code that allows the execution of unwanted, potentially harmful, remote-controlled operations on a device.” The same policy allows some monitoring apps only when their function is disclosed and they remain visibly identifiable. Such apps must not hide or cloak monitoring behavior, and while running they are expected to show a persistent notification and a unique icon. Those are requirements for apps distributed through Google Play, not a guarantee that every app on a phone follows them. Read the policy at Google Play Console Help.

Establish authorization before you delete anything
Ask these questions for each unfamiliar app:
| Question | What it tells you | Safe next move |
|---|---|---|
| Do you remember installing it or approving it? | An app you knowingly chose has a different risk profile from one that appeared unexpectedly. | Check your download history, receipts or setup notes before uninstalling. |
| Does the name and publisher match its stated purpose? | Impostor apps often use names that resemble legitimate tools. | Open the app’s information page and compare its identity with the organization that supplied it. |
| Is the phone managed by an employer, school or family administrator? | Management software may be required for access to work or school resources. | Ask the administrator before removing it; deletion can violate policy or disable needed services. |
| Does the app explain what it monitors or controls? | Disclosure and a visible indicator are important for legitimate monitoring tools. | Do not treat a capability alone as proof of malware; investigate missing or misleading disclosure. |
If another person may be monitoring you or could retaliate, do not confront them or immediately delete an app solely on the basis of this guide. The steps below are technical checks, not a personal-safety plan. Consider contacting a trusted local support service from a device you believe is safe.
Warning signs: clues, not proof
Google lists several possible signs of malware: persistent pop-ups, unexpected sign-outs from accounts, unusual device behavior and messages sent from your contacts that you did not write. An unfamiliar app, sluggishness or a warm battery can also have benign explanations such as an update, a failing battery or a poorly designed app. Use several clues together and verify the app’s identity before deciding.
- Persistent pop-ups: note whether they continue outside the app that normally displays them.
- Unexpected account sign-outs: record which account was affected and whether Google reports a security event.
- Unusual behavior: document changes in settings or actions you did not initiate.
- Messages you did not send: check Sent folders and ask contacts whether they received anything unusual.
None of these observations establishes that a specific remote-access app is malicious. They tell you when to perform the checks below and when to escalate.
Step 1: Run Google Play Protect
Play Protect is the first built-in check because it evaluates apps from Google Play and apps installed from other sources. Google says it performs a lightweight, daily, automatic scan and lets you start a full device scan at any time. Depending on what it finds, it can warn you, disable an app until removal or remove some known harmful apps. A clean result means Play Protect did not identify a problem in that scan; it does not prove that every unwanted access tool or policy-violating app is absent. - Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Play Protect.
- Review the displayed scan status and start a scan using the control shown on your phone.
- Open Play Protect’s settings and confirm Scan apps with Play Protect is enabled.
- If you installed an app outside Google Play, enable Improve harmful app detection when that option is offered.
Google changes labels and placement between Android releases and manufacturers. If a label differs, use the Play Store’s Settings search or the help option on the Play Protect screen rather than assuming the feature is missing.
How to interpret a Play Protect warning
Read the app name and the action Play Protect recommends. If it offers removal, follow the on-screen action and then scan again. If it disables an app, do not re-enable it merely to test whether the warning disappears. Preserve the warning text or a screenshot if you need to contact the developer, your employer’s IT team or the device maker.
Step 2: Make an inventory of installed apps
Play Protect is an automated detector; it is not an authorization audit. Review the app list yourself and compare it with what you remember choosing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings and use its search field for Apps, App info or a similar label.
- Open the complete installed-app list. On some phones it is under Apps & notifications; on others the wording is different.
- Work through the list slowly. Record the exact app name and publisher for anything unfamiliar rather than deleting it immediately.
- Compare each candidate with your installation history, a work or school enrollment notice, and the person or organization that supplied the phone.
- Separate apps you do not need from apps you do not trust. The first category can usually be removed for housekeeping; the second needs identity and authorization checks.
Android variants do not present identical menus, and a system component may have a technical name that is unfamiliar. Do not infer that an app is hidden malware because its name is obscure or because it cannot be removed from the normal list. A managed phone can legitimately restrict removal.

Use purpose and disclosure as evidence
Open the candidate app’s information page and read its description, publisher and stated function. Ask whether its function explains why it would need remote control, monitoring or accessibility capabilities. For an authorized support session, you should be able to identify who requested it, why it was installed and how to stop the session. For an employer- or school-managed device, the administrator should be able to explain the enrollment.
Google’s policy expectation that monitoring apps disclose their function and show a persistent notification is a useful question to ask, but it is not a forensic test. A malicious app can ignore policy, while a legitimate app can be misconfigured. Treat missing disclosure as a reason to investigate further, not as a standalone verdict.
Step 3: Uninstall an app you do not trust
Use one of Google’s documented removal routes. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer, so the wording on your phone may not match these examples exactly.
Route A: Google Play Store
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Select Manage apps & devices.
- Open the Manage tab.
- Select the app.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm.
This is the general route in Google’s Android instructions; the guide notes that some steps apply only to Android 13 and later. See Android Help: Delete apps on your Android device.

Route B: Android Settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps & notifications or the equivalent apps section.
- Choose See all apps if that option appears.
- Select the app you investigated.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm.
Google documents this route as Settings > Apps & notifications > See all apps > select the app > Uninstall. The exact labels differ across devices. Google’s malware guidance is available at Google Account Help.
After uninstalling
- Restart the phone if the app’s behavior continues immediately after removal.
- Run Play Protect again and check whether the warning has cleared.
- Review your account activity from a device you trust if the app had access to account information.
- Tell your employer, school or support provider if the app was part of an authorized setup and you removed it accidentally.
What to do when you cannot uninstall the app
An app missing from the ordinary list, an unavailable Uninstall button or an app that returns after removal does not by itself prove malicious intent. Possible explanations include a system component, a device-admin restriction, a work or school management profile, or a manufacturer-specific control.
- Confirm that you selected the correct app and publisher in the app-information screen.
- Use Settings search for the app name and read any management or administrator notice shown by your phone.
- If the phone belongs to an employer, school or another administrator, ask that administrator whether the app is required before changing management settings.
- Consult the manufacturer’s official support for your exact model and Android version. Do not apply button combinations or removal commands from a different model.
The available official guidance does not establish one universal procedure for administrator-protected or otherwise non-removable apps. Avoid instructions that promise to defeat management controls; they can lock the device, erase data or violate an organization’s policy.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchStep 4: Update Android and Google Play components
Google recommends checking three update areas: Android software updates, Android security updates and Google Play system updates. Open Settings and search for update, then open each update page your phone provides. Keep the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi when an update requires a restart, and read the screen for storage or backup requirements.
Best Value
Update labels and locations vary by manufacturer. If a security patch is unavailable, note the date shown in Settings and ask the device maker whether your model is still supported. An update can close a vulnerability, but installing one does not replace the app inventory, Play Protect scan or account review.
Step 5: Protect your Google Account
If an unwanted app may have exposed credentials or account activity, open Google Account Security Checkup and resolve the issues it identifies. Google’s malware guidance includes Security Checkup alongside Play Protect, updates and app removal. Perform account protection from a device you trust when possible.
- Review unfamiliar security events or sign-ins presented by Security Checkup.
- Follow Google’s prompts for any account setting it marks as needing attention.
- Check whether unexpected sign-outs or messages coincide with an account alert.
- After securing the account, return to the phone and complete the app and update checks.
Do not assume that uninstalling an app automatically reverses activity that already occurred on an account. Account review is a separate step because an app and a compromised credential can persist on different timelines.
When a reset or manufacturer help is appropriate
If pop-ups, unexplained behavior, account anomalies or other warning signs continue after Play Protect, app review, removal and updates, Google says you may need to reset the Android device or ask the company that made it for help. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for your model before choosing a reset.
Prepare before resetting
- Identify photos, contacts, documents and authenticator data that must be preserved.
- Confirm that you know the Google Account credentials needed after the reset.
- Check which data is already synchronized and which exists only on the phone.
- Save evidence of suspicious activity if you may need technical or organizational support.
- Ask the device maker what the reset removes and whether an enrolled work device requires administrator action.
A reset can remove local data and is not a universal first response. It should follow the documented steps for your phone, not a generic button sequence. If the device is managed, contact the administrator before resetting so you do not create an activation or enrollment problem.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the app: record its exact name, publisher and stated purpose.
- Confirm authorization: check your own installation history and any employer, school or family-management arrangement.
- Check for multiple warning signs: pop-ups, unexpected sign-outs, unusual behavior or messages you did not send are possible signs, not proof.
- Run Play Protect: verify that scanning is on, enable improved detection for outside-Play apps when offered, and start a scan.
- Remove only what you understand: use the Play Store or Settings route and keep a note of what you changed.
- Escalate blocked removal: seek the administrator’s or manufacturer’s instructions rather than trying to bypass controls.
- Update and secure accounts: check Android, security and Google Play system updates, then complete Security Checkup.
- Escalate persistent symptoms: ask the manufacturer for help and consider a properly prepared reset.
This sequence combines automated detection, human verification, safe removal and recovery. It avoids two common errors: deleting a legitimate management tool without authorization and treating a clean scan as proof that no unwanted access exists.
