A coin’s headline volume or a tight top quote cannot prove that a larger order will fill at a reasonable price. Liquidity is a property of a specific pair and venue at a specific time.
What altcoin liquidity actually measures
Liquidity is the market’s ability to absorb a buy or sell order without a large price concession. In practice, that ability changes by exchange, quote currency, order size, time of day and market conditions. The same token can have a relatively usable market in one pair and a thin, expensive market in another.

S&P Global’s framework identifies four useful measures: trading volume, spread, market depth and slippage. Its analysis covers selected markets and a historical period, so it is useful for understanding the framework rather than for rating any token’s live liquidity. See S&P Global’s liquidity analysis.

Volume describes completed trades, not available inventory
Volume tells you how much traded during a chosen period, such as the last 24 hours. It provides context about activity, but it does not tell you how many units are currently offered near the price you need. Reported volume can also be inflated by wash trading, in which activity is created without genuine economic transfer. Kraken discusses this limitation in its explanation of crypto liquidity.

Spread is the immediate price gap
The best bid is the highest displayed buy price. The best ask is the lowest displayed sell price. The difference between them is the quoted spread. A narrow spread generally reduces the cost of an immediate trade, but it may conceal very little quantity at those prices.
Depth shows how much price pressure your order creates
Depth is the quantity available across multiple price levels on each side of the order book. Cumulative depth adds the quantities available at successive bids or asks. A market can show a penny-wide spread but have only a small amount at the best ask; a larger buy then consumes several asks and receives a worse average price. The order-book mechanics are explained in KTX’s order-book guide.
Slippage is the execution difference
Slippage is the difference between the price you expected and the price at which the order actually fills. For a buy, walking up through multiple ask levels raises the weighted-average fill; for a sell, walking down through bids lowers it. Trading fees and the spread are separate costs and should be accounted for separately from price impact.
Define the trade before judging the market
There is no meaningful liquidity verdict until you specify the transaction you want to make. Write down these details before opening a chart:
- Asset and pair: the exact token and quote currency, such as the spot pair you intend to use.
- Venue: the exchange or broker where the order will execute. Liquidity is fragmented across platforms, and each venue has its own book.
- Side: buying consumes asks; selling later will consume bids. Check both sides if you expect to exit.
- Order size: state the amount in tokens and in quote-currency value. A market that is liquid for a small test order may be costly for your full position.
- Order type: decide whether immediate execution or a price limit matters more.
- Cost tolerance: set the maximum spread, slippage and fee you are willing to accept. No reviewed source establishes a universal percentage that is suitable for every altcoin.
- Timing: note when you checked the book. A volatile market can change materially between inspection and submission.
Step-by-step liquidity check
1. Select the actual market
Open the spot market for the exact asset, quote currency and venue you will use. Do not substitute an aggregated coin page or a different pair. A token may trade against a major currency, a stablecoin and a local currency with different prices, spreads and depth. If you plan to buy with one quote asset, inspect that pair rather than assuming another pair is interchangeable.
Record the venue’s trading fee schedule and any minimum order, tick-size or lot-size rules shown in the order form. Those rules affect the final cost and whether your intended quantity can be submitted exactly.
2. Check recent activity as context
Look at recent trades, not just a single 24-hour volume number. Note whether transactions occur continuously or in sporadic bursts, and whether most activity appears concentrated in a short interval. A quiet book with a large reported volume deserves extra scrutiny because completed volume does not guarantee current executable quantity.

Compare the displayed recent trades with the quantities in the live book. If trades are tiny while the headline volume is very large, investigate the venue’s methodology and be cautious about treating the volume as proof of liquidity. 3. Read the best bid, best ask and relative spread
Write down the best bid and best ask at the same moment. Calculate the midpoint:
midpoint = (best bid + best ask) / 2
Then calculate the relative quoted spread:
relative spread = (best ask − best bid) / midpoint × 100
Using a percentage makes comparisons fairer when two markets trade at different price levels. The spread is an immediate round-trip consideration: buying at the ask and selling at the bid would lose the quoted gap before fees if prices did not move. It is not, however, a complete liquidity test because it says nothing about the quantity available at those quotes.
4. Inspect cumulative depth on both sides
Expand the order book beyond the first row. For a planned buy, add the quantities at the best ask and each higher ask until the cumulative amount reaches your intended order size. For a planned sell, perform the same exercise down the bid side. Also inspect the opposite side if you may need to exit.
For every level, record the price, displayed quantity and cumulative quantity. Convert quantities to quote-currency value when that is easier to compare with your budget. A displayed wall can disappear before execution, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a commitment.

Replace each live-value cell with data from the venue at the time you intend to trade. The important comparison is your required quantity against cumulative quantity near the market, not the absolute size of a wall far away from the current price.

5. Estimate your average fill and slippage
For a buy that consumes several ask levels, calculate the weighted-average execution price:

Compare that average with the midpoint, best ask or another clearly defined reference. For example, if your expected reference is the midpoint, the estimated buy price impact is:
buy impact = (estimated average fill − midpoint) / midpoint × 100
For a sell, reverse the direction:
sell impact = (midpoint − estimated average fill) / midpoint × 100

Add the venue’s trading fee separately, and remember that the book may change while your order is being submitted. Coinbase explains the distinction between spread and slippage in its slippage and spread guide. An illustrative calculation might show 60 tokens available at the first ask, 40 at the next ask and 100 at a third ask. A 100-token buy would fill partly at the first two levels, so its average would be higher than the first ask. Those quantities and prices are only a calculation example; they are not a liquidity benchmark. Use the venue’s current levels and your own order size instead.

6. Recheck immediately before submitting
Refresh the book and recent trades just before placing the order. Confirm that the pair, side, quantity and order type are still correct. If the spread widens, nearby depth disappears or volatility accelerates, recalculate the expected fill rather than relying on your earlier snapshot.
Do not infer future price direction from depth alone. Orders can be added, filled, modified or cancelled. KTX states: “An order book only shows currently displayed limit orders. How to compare two venues or pairs
If the same altcoin is available in two markets, inspect both at as close to the same time as possible and use the same proposed order size. Compare the dimensions below rather than ranking the markets by volume alone.

S&P Global emphasizes that crypto liquidity is fragmented, while Kraken’s framework also considers spread, depth, stability, imbalance, fees and price dispersion. That is why a venue with the highest reported volume is not automatically the venue with the lowest cost for your order.
Choose the order type with its trade-off in mind

A limit price controls price, not completion. A market order prioritizes completion, not a specific price. Neither order type guarantees a desirable outcome in a thin or rapidly moving market. Platform behavior differs, so read the venue’s own order documentation. Coinbase’s explanation of slippage includes platform-specific behavior; do not turn a Coinbase cancellation condition into a universal rule for other exchanges.
Warning signs that a liquidity reading is unreliable
Headline volume is doing all the work
If the only evidence is a large 24-hour number, you have not checked executable liquidity. Confirm that the live book contains enough nearby quantity for your order and that recent trades look consistent with the reported activity.
The top quote is tight but tiny
A narrow spread at the first level can look attractive while offering only a small fraction of your order. Continue through cumulative levels and calculate the weighted average.
A large wall appears too good to be true
Displayed orders can be cancelled or changed. Recheck the wall shortly before submission and avoid treating it as guaranteed support or resistance.
Depth exists only on one side
A buy may look easy while the bid side is sparse. If you might need to exit, estimate the sell-side fill as carefully as the entry.
The market is moving rapidly
Volatility can widen spreads and remove quotes faster than a manual calculation can keep up. Reduce order size, use a suitable limit strategy or wait for conditions that fit your cost tolerance rather than assuming the earlier snapshot still applies.

Prices and depth in one pair cannot be treated as proof of liquidity in another. Compare the exact pair you can actually trade, including its fees and minimums.
A repeatable worksheet
Save the following fields for each market you are considering:
- Asset, quote currency and venue.
- Timestamp and market condition.
- Best bid, best ask and midpoint.
- Relative spread percentage.
- Displayed quantity and cumulative quantity at successive levels on both sides.
- Your proposed order size in tokens and quote-currency value.
- Estimated weighted-average fill and price impact for entry.
- Estimated weighted-average fill and price impact for a possible exit.
- Trading fee, minimum order and any relevant order restrictions.
- Order type selected and the reason it fits your priority.
- What changed when you rechecked the book immediately before submission.
This record makes two markets comparable and exposes assumptions that a single chart or volume ranking hides.
What cannot be reduced to a universal liquidity score
There is no generally valid spread, depth or slippage threshold that makes every altcoin liquid enough. Acceptable cost depends on the pair, venue, order size, volatility, fees and your own tolerance. A percentage that is tolerable for a small exploratory purchase may be unacceptable for a larger position.
Order-book data is also a changing snapshot. It does not reveal every participant’s intent, and visible liquidity may disappear. Kraken discusses order-book stability as an important liquidity dimension, particularly during volatile conditions: Kraken’s liquidity overview.
Use the four-part check—activity, spread, depth and order-size slippage—on the exact venue and pair, then recheck immediately before execution. That process answers the practical question: not whether the coin is famous or busy in aggregate, but whether your intended trade can enter and later exit at a cost you are prepared to accept.
