Do not type identifiable health information until you have checked the exact chatbot, account, workspace and privacy controls you are about to use. Turn off model-training or activity use where available, but treat that as only one check. Chat history, temporary-chat retention, memory, human review, feedback, uploaded files, connected apps and public sharing can follow separate rules. A setting that exists on a personal account may be unavailable—or controlled by an administrator—on a school, work or healthcare-managed account.
The safest approach is to verify the current settings and terms for your specific service, minimize what you disclose, and assume that “off,” “temporary” or “deleted” does not mean zero processing or instant erasure.

What to check before you enter a health question
Use this sequence immediately before sending a message. Record the account and settings you actually see; do not rely on a tutorial for a different plan, country or app version.
- Identify the service and account: confirm the product name, signed-in email, plan, region and whether the account is personal, school-managed, work-managed or part of a healthcare offering.
- Find the training or activity control: determine whether new conversations can be excluded from model improvement, and whether feedback overrides that choice.
- Choose temporary or incognito mode separately: check whether it avoids history, memory or training, and what short-term retention still applies.
- Inspect memory and personalization: disable features that can carry health details into future replies, and check whether the temporary mode inherits existing personalization.
- Read retention and review terms: look for safety holds, human-review exceptions, deletion timelines and legal or policy exceptions.
- Audit data paths beyond ordinary chat: review feedback buttons, files, images, browser context, connected apps, plugins, tools and shared links.
- Assess professional suitability: if the information belongs to patients, clients or a regulated workflow, verify the exact product terms and required contractual agreements.
These checks reduce avoidable exposure; they do not turn a consumer chatbot into a confidential medical record system.

Why a training opt-out is not a privacy switch
Chatbots commonly separate at least four controls: whether a conversation is used to improve models, whether it appears in your history or activity log, how long the provider retains a copy, and whether a memory or personalization system can use it later. Deleting a visible conversation may not erase data already retained for safety, review or model-improvement processes.
Human review is another distinct issue. A provider may sample or select conversations for safety, abuse investigation, quality work or feedback processing. “Not used to train” does not necessarily mean “never seen by a person.” Similarly, encryption or a privacy icon does not establish that a service meets the confidentiality, contractual or regulatory requirements of your organization.
Use the narrowest disclosure that can answer your question. Remove names, dates of birth, addresses, medical-record numbers, photographs, exact appointment dates and combinations of details that could identify someone. If a clinician, employer, insurer or school supplied the information, follow that organization’s rules before sending it to any consumer service.

Open the account menu and verify the product name and signed-in identity. Then determine whether you are in a personal account, a work or school workspace, or a dedicated healthcare product. The same brand can expose different controls across these contexts.
Personal accounts
Personal plans generally expose privacy controls to the individual user, but the labels and defaults can change by country, age eligibility, app version and product tier. Read the current in-app explanation rather than assuming that a setting from a different device applies.
Work and school workspaces
Managed workspaces can impose organization-level rules for retention, memory, compliance and administrator access. An employee may be unable to change a control, or a local switch may not override the organization’s policy. Ask the administrator or privacy contact which terms govern the workspace before entering someone else’s health information.

Healthcare-specific offerings
A feature with “health” in its name is not automatically a clinical system. Check whether the provider expressly supports your use case and whether the required agreement exists. OpenAI states that ChatGPT Health is not intended for clinical or covered-entity use and does not offer a Business Associate Agreement. That statement is specific to that product and does not establish suitability for any other service.

Find the control that governs model improvement or activity retention. Capture the exact wording and any exception for feedback. Turning this control off generally affects future conversations; it does not by itself remove saved chats.
ChatGPT
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says, “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The setting applies across devices when you are signed in. Regular conversations can still remain in chat history, so deletion is a separate action.
Do not press the thumbs-up or thumbs-down button on a sensitive conversation after opting out unless you have checked the current feedback terms. OpenAI warns that submitting feedback can make the entire associated conversation available for model training.
Gemini
Open Gemini Apps Activity and inspect Keep Activity. Google says that when Keep Activity is off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train AI models unless you send feedback. The setting does not stop every form of service processing, and it does not change unrelated Google controls such as Web & App Activity.

Claude
In the consumer Claude account, review Privacy Settings and the current Model Improvement control. Anthropic distinguishes consumer settings from its commercial offerings. Anthropic says chats used to improve Claude may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years, while Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement. Its separate commercial policy says chats and coding sessions from API, Console, Team and Enterprise offerings are not used for training unless the customer joins the Development Partner Program, reports material or opts in. Do not apply that commercial policy to a consumer account.

Step 3: Use temporary or incognito mode—and read its limits
Temporary modes are separate from training controls. Before sending, start a new temporary or incognito conversation and confirm the mode indicator. Then read what the provider says about history, memory, safety retention and review.
ChatGPT Temporary Chat
OpenAI says Temporary Chat does not appear in history, does not create or update memories and is not used to improve OpenAI models. It may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. A personalized Temporary Chat can use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins unless you turn personalization off when starting it. Therefore, check both the temporary-chat selector and the personalization controls.
Gemini temporary chats
Google says temporary chats, and chats created while Keep Activity is off, may remain associated with the account for up to 72 hours so the service can respond, process feedback and protect the service. Google says temporary chats are not used to improve Google AI with human reviewers, but it may still process them for service and safety purposes, including with human reviewers. “Temporary” therefore describes a mode and a retention policy, not a promise of immediate disappearance.
Claude Incognito
Anthropic says Claude Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Confirm that the conversation is actually marked Incognito; an ordinary consumer chat remains governed by the account’s ordinary retention and improvement settings.
Step 4: Check memory and personalization independently
Memory can expose health details in a later conversation even when the current chat is not used for training. OpenAI explicitly treats Memory and model-training controls as separate. In ChatGPT, turn memory off or start a Temporary Chat; if the temporary conversation is personalized, disable personalization at the start so existing memories, custom instructions or plugins are not applied.
Google says Gemini may use sensitive information from prior chats to personalize responses when Memory is on. Its Privacy Hub lists separate controls for activity, saved information and Connected Apps. Turning off Gemini settings does not change other Google settings such as Web & App Activity. Review saved information and remove entries that contain health details before using the service for a new question.

For any chatbot, ask two questions: “Can this conversation update a profile or memory?” and “Can an old memory influence a future answer?” If the interface does not answer clearly, avoid entering identifiable information.
Step 5: Understand retention, human review and deletion
Read the provider’s current retention notice, not just the switch label. The following figures are provider-stated periods and can be subject to safety, legal or policy exceptions; they are not independent audits or guarantees of implementation.

These periods explain why “delete” is not always instantaneous erasure. Google’s human-review data, for example, is not deleted when you delete Activity. Anthropic’s backend timeline concerns consumer conversations and does not erase de-identified material already used for model improvement. Keep the qualification attached to the number whenever you document a setting for your organization.

Feedback buttons
Thumbs-up, thumbs-down and written feedback can create a separate data path. Check the warning shown before submitting feedback. On ChatGPT, OpenAI says the whole associated conversation may be used to train models when feedback is submitted after opting out.
Attachments and browser context
A prompt may include more than the words you type. Before sending, inspect attachments, images, pasted documents, browser or page context and automatically included conversation history. Remove clinical photographs, scanned forms and documents containing identifiers unless your organization has approved that workflow.
Connected apps and tools
Review connected-app permissions and disconnect anything unnecessary. Google lists files, images, shared browser content and connected-app information among data Gemini Apps may process. Third-party connected apps apply their own policies; disconnecting an app or deleting Gemini activity may not delete information that the app already received.
Public links and collaboration features
Do not create a public conversation link or share a transcript containing health details. Check who can access a workspace, export, link or shared folder before using collaboration features. A privacy setting for ordinary chat does not automatically protect a copy that you deliberately publish or send to another service.
Step 7: Decide whether the use is professional or regulated
Consumer-facing controls do not establish contractual or regulatory suitability. If you are a clinician, covered entity, employer, school, insurer, researcher or contractor handling another person’s information, verify the exact product, region, administrator policy and agreement required by your organization. Ask whether the provider offers the necessary data-processing terms, audit commitments and business-associate arrangement where applicable.
Do not infer suitability from an “AI health” label, an encryption statement or a training opt-out. OpenAI’s statement that ChatGPT Health is not intended for clinical or covered-entity use and does not offer a Business Associate Agreement illustrates why the product’s own terms matter more than the feature name.

A practical pre-send checklist
- Product name and signed-in account confirmed.
- Plan, region and workspace type recorded.
- Training or activity setting checked and feedback exception understood.
- Temporary or Incognito mode enabled when appropriate.
- Memory, saved information, personalization, custom instructions and plugins reviewed.
- Retention, human-review and deletion terms read.
- Attachments, browser context, connected apps and tools removed unless essential.
- No public link, export or third-party handoff will expose the conversation.
- Identifying details minimized or removed.
- Professional, contractual and regulatory requirements cleared by the responsible organization.
If you already shared identifiable health information
Stop sending additional details and preserve the account and conversation identifiers needed for support or compliance records. Delete the conversation or activity using the provider’s current controls, clear related memories or saved information, withdraw unnecessary connected-app permissions, and remove shared links or exports. Then read the provider’s retention and review terms to determine what deletion does—and does not—remove. A deletion request may not reach data already retained for safety, human review, feedback processing or model-improvement pipelines.
If the information belongs to a patient, client, employee or student, notify the privacy or security contact required by your organization. Do not assume that deleting the visible chat resolves an incident; the appropriate response depends on the data, account type, jurisdiction and organization policy.
Questions to resolve before you trust a setting
Does turning off chat history stop training?
Not necessarily. History and model-improvement controls are separate. Verify both controls and check whether feedback creates an exception.
Are temporary chats completely private?
No provider statement in this guide promises zero processing. Temporary modes can avoid ordinary history or training while allowing short-term safety or service retention and, in some cases, human review.

Does deleting activity erase every copy?
No. Provider terms can retain data for safety, review, service delivery or de-identified model-improvement purposes after a user deletes visible activity. Treat deletion as one remediation step, not proof of instantaneous erasure.
