Treat an AI brand recommendation as a lead, not proof. Before you buy, verify the exact product and its claims against current manufacturer information, compare independent evidence, and check the seller, terms, and full cost. Generative AI can state false information confidently, and a citation or link is not proof that the cited page supports the claim.
Turn the recommendation into claims you can check
Separate the answer into specific statements: the product exists, a feature is included, it works with your device, a warranty lasts a stated period, or the item is available. Verify each fact that could affect your purchase. Then separate those facts from judgments such as “best,” “most reliable,” or “best value.” Those rankings only mean something when the criteria and comparison set are clear and relevant to your needs.

NIST describes “confabulation” as generative AI confidently presenting erroneous or false content; it also notes risks such as fabricated citations and inconsistent answers. This is a documented failure mode, not evidence that every AI recommendation is wrong or a measure of how often shopping answers fail. See the NIST Generative AI Profile (AI 600-1, July 2024).

- Open each cited page. Do not rely on an AI-generated summary, search snippet, or list of links.
- Match the claim to the page. Find the specific passage and confirm that it supports what the AI said, rather than merely mentioning the product.
- Check whether it is current and relevant. Confirm the page concerns the exact model, version, region, and variant you are considering.
- Find evidence yourself if no useful source is provided. Start with the manufacturer’s current product page or manual, then look for independent expert coverage.
NIST warns that generated citations can be misleading: a citation’s presence does not establish that it explains or supports the answer.

Confirm the exact product and specifications
Record the brand and model number, then match the recommendation to the listing you plan to buy. Similar product names can refer to different generations, capacities, sizes, regional versions, or bundles. Compare the manufacturer’s current listing or manual for the details that matter to your use.
- Dimensions, capacity, and included items
- Features and compatibility with your devices or other equipment
- Warranty terms and any regional limits
- Whether the listing is for the same generation and variant the AI discussed

Compare independent evidence, not just star ratings
Use more than one kind of evidence. Look for a trusted, impartial expert review alongside customer feedback from varied sources. For any review, consider who wrote it, where it appears, when it was published, whether it is sponsored, and the reviewer’s history. Check whether the review covers your exact model rather than a closely named predecessor.

Star averages can be a useful signal, but they do not show whether the reviewers tested the product, whether the reviews are current, or whether the product suits your needs. The FTC recommends considering source diversity and reviewer context rather than relying on ratings alone. Its guidance also notes that identifying fake reviews by appearance can be very difficult. A burst of reviews, a single-purpose account, or disclosed incentives may be reasons to look more closely; none proves fraud on its own. See FTC: How To Evaluate Online Reviews.
Look for incentives that could shape a recommendation
Check whether the AI service, publisher, reviewer, or linked page discloses sponsorship, affiliate commissions, free products, or another material connection. A disclosed connection does not automatically make a recommendation false, but it is relevant context when weighing the evidence. FTC endorsement guidance says material connections that could affect how consumers evaluate an endorsement should be disclosed; the specific requirements depend on the context. Compare options using criteria that matter to you
If the AI recommends one brand over alternatives, compare the exact models on a consistent basis. Choose criteria before accepting a ranking: suitability for your intended use, independently supported performance, relevant reliability evidence, warranty and returns, availability, seller reputation, and total delivered cost. A “best” label is not an objective conclusion unless the criteria, evidence, and alternatives are clear.
Check the seller, listing, and total price
Before checkout, make sure the listing matches the product you verified. Read the full description, including whether it is new, refurbished, or otherwise not new. Confirm who is selling it, shipping and handling charges, taxes and other fees, delivery terms, and return or refund conditions. Search the seller or product name with “complaint” or “scam,” and keep the receipt and any promises made by the seller.

Ask the AI for the exact model number and sources if either is missing, but verify its answer independently. If a claim central to your decision—such as compatibility, a key feature, or warranty coverage—cannot be confirmed, compare another product or wait. Do not let a confident tone, a plausible citation list, or a low price substitute for evidence.
