1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn AI tutor can sound certain while inventing a citation, making a calculation error, or giving different guidance to learners who differ only by name, language, disability, gender, race or cultural context. The dependable check is not a detector score or the tutor’s tone. Save the exact exchange, split the response into claims, verify important claims against authoritative sources, test matched learner prompts for unequal treatment, and have a qualified human decide any consequential outcome.
Use the protocol below for homework help, classroom chatbots and AI-enhanced tutoring. It is designed to catch both hallucinations (unsupported or fabricated content) and bias (systematic errors, stereotypes, omissions or unequal treatment). Keep the original answer and your correction so a learner can see what is known, uncertain and changed.

Why a fluent tutoring answer is not evidence
Generative models produce plausible language by predicting text. Fluency, a friendly explanation and a confident conclusion do not prove that the underlying claim is true. A response may combine a real source with an invented page number, attach a genuine quotation to the wrong speaker, apply a rule from another country, or skip a condition that changes the result.

The tutor may assume that a learner with a particular name knows less, recommend different careers, use a deficit description of a home language, ignore an accommodation, or present one cultural viewpoint as universal. An answer can therefore be factually correct in isolation yet educationally unfair because it gives some learners less detail, encouragement, opportunity or patience.

UNESCO’s 2023 guidance says education policy should protect human agency, inclusion, equity, gender equality, and cultural and linguistic diversity. In a 7 September 2023 statement, UNESCO warned that school use was moving faster than public scrutiny, checks and regulation, and called for teacher training and safeguards. Those principles mean that checking an AI tutor is part of teaching practice, not an optional technical exercise.
Start by preserving the exact evidence
Do not begin by asking the tutor to rewrite its answer. First create a record that another person can inspect.
- Save the full prompt and response. Include system or classroom instructions that the service exposes, attached files, images, links, and any follow-up turns that changed the answer.
- Record the tool identity. Note the product name, model or version if displayed, account or classroom mode, date and time, and whether browsing, retrieval, calculator or code execution was enabled.
- Preserve cited material. Copy each URL, title, author or organisation and publication date exactly as shown. A later model update can produce a different answer from the same prompt.
- Remove unnecessary personal data. Replace a student’s name, address, health details, identifying story or school record with a neutral label before sending a prompt to a public service. UNESCO’s guidance and the U.S. Department of Education’s school-AI guidance both emphasize privacy and human control.
Keep the original file read-only if possible. A screenshot is useful for appearance, while a text export makes each claim easier to review. Store access to the record according to your school or district retention policy.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Break the response into checkable claims
Read sentence by sentence and label what kind of statement you are seeing. One sentence can contain several claims; split it when each part would need a different source or calculation.
| Claim type | What to check | Typical warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Fact | Whether an authoritative source supports the wording, date, population and location | Specific statistic, law, study or historical event with no verifiable source |
| Calculation | Every input, formula, unit conversion and intermediate step | A polished final number with skipped work or inconsistent units |
| Interpretation | Whether the cited evidence justifies the conclusion and what alternative readings exist | “This proves” when the source only reports a correlation or limited case |
| Recommendation | Assumptions, risks, eligibility and who is qualified to decide | Advice about health, safety, discipline, placement or law presented as universal |
| Quotation | Exact wording, speaker, work, edition and surrounding context | Memorable sentence that cannot be found in the named source |
| Opinion or encouragement | Whether it is clearly marked as opinion and applied consistently to comparable learners | Praise or criticism that changes with the learner’s identity rather than the work |
Prioritize claims that can affect grades, health, safety, legal rights, placement, discipline, safeguarding or access to opportunities. A minor wording error in a creative-writing suggestion does not need the same escalation as an incorrect medication instruction or an invented rule about exam eligibility.

Verify important claims independently
Ask for a complete, traceable source
For each material factual claim, ask the tutor: “Give the source title, author or organisation, publication date and direct link. Quote the passage that supports your claim, and state the population and geography it covers.” Then open the source yourself. Confirm that the passage exists and says what the tutor claims, rather than merely containing similar words.
Check dates carefully. A current rule may have replaced an older one; a study about university students may not apply to primary pupils; evidence from one country may not answer a question about another. Watch for a real publication paired with the wrong year, a plausible-looking study that does not exist, a citation to a different population, and a link whose title does not match the statement.
Recompute mathematics and science
Write down the given values and reproduce the calculation line by line with an independent calculator or by hand. Check units, rounding, signs, significant figures and whether a percentage is being treated as a percentage point. For science, verify the mechanism, conditions and boundary cases. Ask the tutor to identify assumptions such as constant temperature, a closed system, a particular definition or an idealized model; then test whether changing one assumption changes the answer.
Run code yourself
Copy code into a controlled environment rather than trusting a claimed output. Inspect imports, file paths, random seeds, permissions, version-specific behavior and handling of missing or malicious input. Compare the actual output with the explanation. Never execute an unknown script on confidential student data or a school network without the required review.
Confirm quotations and translations
Search the primary work or a reliable scholarly edition for the exact words. Check who said them, when, in what language and with what surrounding context. For a translation, compare the original and the translator’s note when the distinction matters. A quotation that cannot be located is unverified, even if it sounds perfectly characteristic of the author.

Probe uncertainty instead of rewarding confidence
After checking the evidence, ask questions that force the tutor to expose its limits:
- “What could make this answer wrong?”
- “Which part is most uncertain, and why?”
- “What evidence would change your conclusion?”
- “Does this apply to my country, curriculum, age group and time period?”
- “Which assumptions did you make about the learner, the data or the question?”
Compare the revised response with the sources, not with its tone. A tutor that names a genuine limitation is not necessarily correct, but a refusal to identify limits is a reason to escalate. Do not let a confidence percentage substitute for evidence: the number may be calibrated for a different task, and model or prompt changes can alter it.
Test fairness with matched prompts
A single offensive or helpful answer is a signal, not a bias study. Use paired prompts that are identical except for one learner attribute or context. Keep the subject, task, reading level, prior work and requested output constant. Change only one variable at a time, then repeat with several names or scenarios to reduce the chance that an unusual wording caused the difference.
Variables to vary
- A name associated with gender, race or ethnicity.
- Home language or dialect.
- A disability and a clearly stated accommodation.
- Religion or cultural context.
- Local versus dominant cultural examples.
What to compare
| Dimension | Questions for the reviewer |
|---|---|
| Correctness | Are the facts, calculations and explanations equally accurate? |
| Detail and reading level | Does one learner receive a shorter, harder or less actionable explanation? |
| Expectations | Does the tutor assume different ability, effort, behavior or prior knowledge? |
| Encouragement and tone | Are comparable mistakes met with the same patience and constructive feedback? |
| Opportunities | Are advanced courses, careers, enrichment or leadership suggested unevenly? |
| Accommodation handling | Does the tutor respect the stated support, or treat disability as a deficit? |
| Examples and representation | Are names, histories, dialects and sources represented without stereotypes? |
| Revision behavior | When given the same correction, does it acknowledge and fix the error equally? |
For example, submit the same algebra question twice, changing only the learner’s name, then repeat with a home-language note. Compare the worked steps, not just the final answer. For an essay prompt, change the cultural setting while holding the rubric constant and check whether the tutor treats one tradition as the default. For a disability probe, state the accommodation precisely and see whether the explanation adapts without lowering the intellectual target.
NIST’s Towards a Standard for Identifying and Managing Bias in Artificial Intelligence (SP 1270, 2022) frames this work as identifying, measuring, managing and reducing harmful bias across the AI lifecycle. Record the prompt pairs, outputs and observed differences so another reviewer can reproduce them. One pair cannot establish a rate or prove intent; repeated, consistent disparities justify escalation and remediation.

Look for omissions and representation problems
Bias is often what the answer leaves out. Ask whose history, examples, dialect, sources or perspective is missing. Check for stereotypes, deficit framing, token examples and a single cultural viewpoint presented as universal. An answer about literature may mention only one canon; a civics explanation may omit the affected community; a language lesson may label a dialect as “wrong” rather than describing the context in which a form is expected.
Ask the tutor to name the scope of its answer and suggest credible perspectives it may have omitted. Verify those additions independently. Do not require false equivalence: inclusion means accurately representing relevant evidence and lived contexts, not treating every claim as equally supported.
Keep a human decision-maker for consequential use
A teacher or qualified subject expert should review disputed answers, grading, placement, discipline, safeguarding decisions and advice that could materially affect a learner. The U.S. Department of Education’s Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning: Insights and Recommendations (May 2023) treats evaluation, safety, privacy, feedback and teacher roles as central, and warns that system development can create bias in pattern detection and unfairness in automated decisions.
Use AI to suggest explanations or questions, not to make an unappealable decision. Give the learner a way to challenge an answer and ask for a human explanation. Parent and teacher engagement is specifically emphasized in the Department’s guidance on AI-enhanced high-impact tutoring. If a tutor’s answer conflicts with a textbook, policy or professional judgment, pause the consequential action until the conflict is resolved.

Record the result in an audit log
A small, consistent log makes correction possible and prevents a disputed answer from becoming an undocumented classroom fact.
Best Value
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Claim | The exact sentence or calculation being tested |
| Evidence checked | Source title, author or organisation, date, link and relevant passage |
| Result | Verified, contradicted or unresolved |
| Bias probe | Attribute varied, paired prompt and observed difference |
| Reviewer | Name or role of the teacher or subject expert |
| Correction | Replacement explanation and what the learner was told |
| Date and action | When it was resolved, reported, restricted or escalated |
Share uncertainty with the learner instead of silently presenting a corrected answer as though the model had been right. Preserve both versions under the applicable privacy and retention rules. Patterns in the log can reveal a recurring subject error, a harmful prompt, a data problem or a model update that needs investigation.
How to compare two tutoring tools responsibly
If a school is evaluating alternatives, use the same fixed test set and the same review criteria. A vendor-reported score alone cannot show whether a system is safe for your learners.
| Evaluation axis | Practical test |
|---|---|
| Claim accuracy | Score independently verified answers on a fixed set of curriculum questions. |
| Citation quality | Check whether links resolve, dates and authors are correct, and passages support the claims. |
| Uncertainty and correction | Ask for limits, provide a correction and record whether the system updates accurately. |
| Languages and learner groups | Use matched prompts across languages, dialects, identities and cultural settings. |
| Accessibility | Test stated accommodations, reading levels, screen-reader-friendly output and alternative formats. |
| Privacy and retention | Review what data is collected, stored, shared, deleted and used for training. |
| Teacher control | Check override tools, review queues, audit logs and the ability to disable high-impact actions. |
| Change transparency | Record model or prompt updates and repeat the test set after a material change. |
| Incident handling | Test how harmful outputs are reported, investigated, corrected and communicated. |
Report results with the test conditions and limitations. Do not convert a small internal exercise into a universal ranking or claim a numerical hallucination or bias rate that was not measured.
Why detectors and confidence labels are insufficient
Automated writing assessment can reward surface features, be fooled by meaningless text and fail to assess creativity; UNESCO’s policy-maker guidance also notes bias against minority students. Those limitations apply to detector-style labels used around tutoring: a label may flag a passage for review, but it cannot establish who wrote it, whether a claim is true or whether an explanation is fair.
Model confidence is likewise only one signal. A confident answer can be fabricated, while a cautious answer can be correct. Prompt wording, retrieval settings and model versions change outcomes. Use detectors or confidence labels to prioritize human checking, never as proof for grading, misconduct findings or access decisions.
A practical classroom response when an answer is wrong
- Pause the consequence. Do not grade, place, discipline or act on the disputed output until a human review is complete.
- Show the evidence. Identify the exact claim, the authoritative source or recomputation, and any uncertainty.
- Explain the correction. Tell the learner what was wrong, why it was plausible and how to verify a similar claim next time.
- Preserve the exchange. Add the prompt, answer, source, correction and reviewer to the log without unnecessary personal data.
- Escalate patterns. Report repeated factual errors, unequal matched-prompt results, privacy incidents or unsafe advice through the school’s designated process.
This approach protects the learner’s agency while making the system accountable. UNESCO’s 2023 guidance captures the principle: “AI must not usurp human intelligence.” As UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said in 2023, “Generative AI can be a tremendous opportunity for human development, but it can also cause harm and prejudice.”
Quick Recap
Common failure modes and fixes
| Failure mode | Fix |
|---|---|
| Trusting a polished explanation | Extract claims and verify the high-impact ones against primary or authoritative sources. |
| Accepting a citation without opening it | Read the cited passage and check author, date, population and geography. |
| Checking only the final math answer | Recompute every step and inspect units, assumptions and rounding. |
| Using one identity swap | Repeat matched prompts with several variants and document the conditions. |
| Treating equal tone as equal treatment | Compare detail, expectations, opportunities, examples, accommodations and revision behavior. |
| Letting AI grade or decide alone | Require qualified human review and a route for learner and parent challenge. |
| Posting identifiable student details | Minimize data, anonymize prompts and follow institutional retention and access rules. |
| Silently correcting the transcript | Keep the original, explain the correction and record the date and reviewer. |
