Before buying a Windows laptop, verify three things separately: the battery’s reported condition, the real capabilities of every port, and the exact model’s repair options. For a used machine, ask the seller for a Windows battery report and clear port photos or tests. For a new machine, read the manufacturer’s specification and service documentation for the precise generation and configuration. A battery report is evidence of capacity and past use—not a guaranteed runtime—and USB-C is only a connector shape, not a promise of charging, display output, or high-speed data.
1. Check the battery with Windows’ built-in report
Windows 11 includes the powercfg /batteryreport command. Microsoft’s official instruction is: “At the command prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport, then press Enter.” The command creates an HTML file and prints its location in the Command Prompt window. Ask a used-laptop seller to run it and send the complete report, not just a screenshot of the command.

Generate the report
- Open Command Prompt. An administrator window is normally unnecessary for this report.
- Type
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Copy the file path shown in the command window, open the HTML report in a browser, and share the file or readable screenshots.
Read the three useful sections

Calculate capacity without claiming runtime
You can calculate a simple reported-capacity ratio:
full-charge capacity ÷ design capacity × 100 = reported capacity percentage

This ratio describes the battery’s reported ability to hold a charge relative to its original design figure. It does not tell you how many hours the laptop will run. Runtime also changes with processor load, screen brightness, refresh rate, power mode, Wi-Fi activity, background software, temperature, and the current charger or dock. A machine with a high ratio can still have poor runtime under a demanding workload, while a lower ratio may be acceptable for a lightly used, inexpensive laptop.
Ask for evidence when the report is incomplete
Missing capacity values, a report that cannot be opened, or usage history that conflicts with the seller’s claims should trigger more questions. Ask for a fresh report generated with the laptop fully charged, the exact model and serial information visible, and a short demonstration of unplugged use. Do not treat a seller’s statement such as “the battery lasts all day” as a substitute for capacity data. The report is one piece of evidence to weigh alongside age, physical condition and your own workload.
Safety check for an in-person purchase
Inspect the case, trackpad and keyboard deck for separation, lifting or unusual gaps. A visibly swollen battery is a safety issue, not a bargaining opportunity. Microsoft advises stopping use immediately if a Surface battery expands beyond its enclosure; do not press, puncture, charge or continue using any visibly swollen laptop. Arrange professional battery service or safe disposal instead.

Surface-specific guidance
Microsoft provides a Surface Repair Tool for supported newer Surface models and a Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for other supported devices. Microsoft also says a Surface battery below 70% of designed capacity may be replaced when the owner wants more capacity, using remaining capacity calculated from full-charge capacity divided by design capacity. That 70% figure is a Surface guideline, not a universal pass/fail threshold for every Windows laptop.
2. Verify what every port actually does
Make a list of the equipment you intend to connect before inspecting the laptop: its charger, an external monitor, a dock, USB-A accessories, wired Ethernet, memory cards, headphones, storage drives or other specialist hardware. Then match that list to physical connectors and documented capabilities. Port count alone is not enough.
Identify the connectors on the exact machine
- Count each USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, audio, card-reader and proprietary connector.
- Note the side and location of the charging port; some laptops accept power through only one USB-C socket or through a dedicated barrel connector.
- Check whether ports are marked with symbols for charging, display output, high-speed transfer or Thunderbolt/USB4.
- Confirm the exact model number and generation. Two configurations sold under the same family name can have different port controllers or optional features.
USB-C is a connector, not a feature guarantee
USB-C can carry charging, data, video or several of those functions, but support varies by laptop, port, cable and peripheral. A USB-C socket may provide basic USB data while lacking Power Delivery, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, Thunderbolt or USB4. Microsoft’s guidance notes that the computer, cable and peripheral all need compatible support, and that alternate modes such as Thunderbolt or DisplayPort may operate only through a designated port.

Read the manufacturer’s port table or manual for each socket. Look for explicit wording such as USB Power Delivery input, DisplayPort over USB-C, Thunderbolt, USB4 and the supported wattage or data rate. Do not infer those features from a USB-C logo, the presence of a lightning symbol on a different socket, or the laptop’s price.

- Bring a compatible charger and cable. Confirm that the laptop charges through the intended connector and that the adapter meets the model’s required wattage.
- Copy a large file through each data port using a known-good drive or accessory. A port that charges may still offer only low-speed data.
- Connect the intended external monitor directly, then through your planned dock if applicable. Check the resolution and refresh rate you need.
- Test Ethernet, the card reader, audio jack and USB-A devices if they are part of your normal setup.
- Test the dock with all of your target peripherals connected. A dock can expose limitations that are not obvious when one device is attached.
Diagnose slow-charging warnings correctly
A Windows slow-charging notification can result from an underpowered or incompatible adapter, an unsuitable cable, or use of the wrong charging port. Verify the supplied charger’s output and the model’s requirements before concluding that the battery is defective. A laptop that charges normally with its specified adapter but slowly from a phone charger is behaving as expected.
3. Check whether the exact model is repairable
Repairability is specific to a model, generation and configuration. Search the complete product name with service manual, maintenance and service guide, parts and battery replacement. Prefer an official manual, then verify that the relevant parts can actually be obtained in your country.

Record these components individually

| Parts supply | Are batteries, keyboards, fans, ports and screws offered through the manufacturer or reputable parts channels in your market? |
Use repairability scores with their rubric and date
iFixit describes its laptop scores as teardown-based ratings from zero, meaning unrepairable, to ten, meaning easiest to repair. Its stated standard is that a repairable device should be straightforward to disassemble and should have replacement parts and instructions supplied or endorsed by the manufacturer. iFixit also cautions that its scoring system changes: “We update our scoring rubric frequently to stay current with new technologies, materials, and design trends.” Read the scorecard version and compare models assessed under a similar rubric rather than treating an old number as permanent. What current examples show
On the iFixit page accessed for this guide, the 2026 Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 and T16 Gen 5 are described as having readily repairable storage and memory, an easily replaced battery, individually replaceable Thunderbolt ports, and Lenovo repair instructions and parts. Those findings apply to the named models and configurations on that page; they are not a blanket statement about every ThinkPad generation.

The page limits Thunderbolt support to named processor generations. Do not generalize those details to every Framework generation or configuration, and check the exact service guide before purchasing tools or parts.

4. Compare two or more candidates on the same evidence
When you have a shortlist, use identical checks for every machine. Keep capacity evidence separate from runtime claims, and record the source and date of each specification.

5. A practical used-laptop inspection workflow
Before meeting the seller
- Ask for the full battery-report HTML file or legible screenshots of Installed battery, Recent usage and Battery usage.
- Request the exact model number, processor generation, memory and storage configuration, charger model and any service-manual link.
- Write down your required peripherals and the minimum port capabilities for each.
- Check the manufacturer’s specifications for that exact configuration, not a review of a similarly named model.
During the inspection
- Compare the physical serial or model label with the advertised configuration.
- Inspect the case for battery swelling, separation, missing screws, bent connectors and liquid damage.
- Boot the laptop, verify the operating system recognizes the expected memory and storage, and confirm the supplied charger is detected.
- Run the port tests with your known-good cable, charger, monitor, drive and dock.
- Open the battery report if the seller has not supplied it in advance, or generate a new one with permission.
- Read the service documentation for the exact model before agreeing to a repairability claim based only on a product family name.
After the inspection
Save the report, photos and model documentation with your purchase records. If capacity data is inconsistent, a required port cannot be tested, or replacement parts are unavailable in your region, price the uncertainty as a future repair—not as a minor specification difference. Walk away when a swollen battery, undisclosed configuration change or missing charger makes safe verification impossible.
6. Red flags that should change the buying decision
- The seller refuses to provide a battery report while claiming excellent battery life.
- Full-charge capacity is absent, the report belongs to a different machine, or the usage history does not fit the laptop’s age.
- A USB-C port is advertised as universal, but the manual does not explicitly confirm charging, display output or the required data standard.
- The laptop charges only with an unknown low-wattage adapter, or Windows reports slow charging with the specified setup.
- Storage or memory is soldered when your planned workload requires future upgrades.
- The service manual is unavailable and no replacement battery, keyboard, fan or port is offered for the exact generation.
- The repair score is quoted without its rubric version, model configuration or assessment context.
- The chassis is separating or the battery appears swollen.
7. The buying decision in one sentence
Choose the laptop whose reported battery capacity is credible for its age, whose documented and tested ports cover your actual equipment, and whose exact configuration has accessible manuals and obtainable replacement parts; treat every unverified claim as a future cost or risk.
