How to Check a Website’s Status Page and Incident Updates

To find out whether a website is down, check the service owner’s official status page, then drill into the exact product, region, or component you use. Open any active incident, read its newest timestamped update and current state, check scheduled maintenance and recent history, and subscribe to notifications if you need to follow the event. A green dashboard is useful evidence about the provider’s reported systems, but it does not test your device, Wi‑Fi, DNS, internet provider, account, or route to the service.

What a status page can—and cannot—tell you

A status page is the provider’s public incident-communication channel. Atlassian’s official audit material describes Statuspage as “an incident communication tool used by organizations as part of their incident management process.” In practical terms, it is where a service owner reports known disruption, degraded performance, component failures, and planned work.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The page answers a narrow but important question: Has the provider reported a problem in the systems it lists? It does not prove that every customer can reach the service. A person in one country may have a routing or DNS problem while the provider reports all systems operational; an account, workspace, feature flag, browser session, or local network can fail while the public page remains green. Conversely, a provider incident can be marked resolved while an individual’s cached DNS, connection, or account issue continues.

  • Provider-side evidence: incident notices, affected components, locations, timestamps, mitigation notes, and maintenance records.
  • Not an end-to-end test: the dashboard normally does not measure your computer, home network, ISP, DNS resolver, VPN path, or account.
  • Not always instantaneous: an emerging or highly localized issue may appear on the page after detection, or not fit the provider’s published component model.

Use the page as one branch of diagnosis, not as a universal reachability guarantee.

Find the provider’s official status source

Search by service name and “status”

Start with a query such as service name status, service name outage, or service name incident. Prefer a result hosted or linked by the service owner. A help-center article, account console, documentation page, or footer link can also lead to the official dashboard.

Third-party outage aggregators can be useful for spotting that other people are reporting trouble, but they are not authoritative about the provider’s internal systems. Treat them as corroboration only, then verify the event on the owner’s page or through the owner’s support channel.

Confirm that the page belongs to the provider

Check the domain, branding, product list, and links back to the provider’s main support or documentation site. Look for a clear service hierarchy rather than a generic uptime graph. A legitimate page normally identifies products or components, gives incident states and update times, and separates active incidents from maintenance and history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bookmark the confirmed page for future incidents. During an outage, search results can be crowded with unofficial reports, cached pages, and unrelated services using similar names.

Read the status hierarchy, not just the headline

Open the product or component you actually use

Large providers commonly organize status information in levels: an overall summary, products, individual components, APIs, and geographic locations. Select the specific editor, login service, API, storage region, database, or other function involved in your task.

Cloudflare’s dashboard, for example, separates services and locations. A top-level operational message can therefore coexist with a regional or component-specific event. The same principle applies to any provider that rolls many systems into one overall indicator.

  • Identify the exact product or plan, not merely the parent company.
  • Check whether the problem concerns the web interface, API, authentication, billing, data processing, or another dependency.
  • Review listed regions, data centers, or network locations when the service is geographically distributed.
  • Note whether the status is operational, degraded, partial outage, major outage, or another provider-defined label.

Interpret labels as the provider defines them

Status colors and words are not standardized. One dashboard may use operational, degraded performance, partial outage, and major outage; another may use investigating, identified, monitoring, and resolved for incident stages. Read the page’s legend or incident text instead of assuming that a color has the same meaning everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the incident and follow its timeline

Read the first and newest updates

Select the active incident rather than relying on the summary banner. Read the reported impact, affected components, the time the incident began or was first posted, and every update through the newest entry. The newest timestamp tells you how current the provider’s information is; the first timestamp provides context about duration.

Cloudflare’s example uses stages such as investigating, identified, monitoring, and resolved. Other providers may name equivalent stages differently. “Investigating” means the cause is still being examined; “identified” indicates a suspected or confirmed cause; “monitoring” usually means a mitigation is in place and the provider is watching results; “resolved” means the provider has closed that incident according to its own criteria.

Separate facts from estimates

Record what the provider actually states: affected service, scope, start time, latest update time, current state, and mitigation. Do not turn a statement that engineers are working on a fix into a restoration promise. If no estimated recovery time is published, there is no reliable time to report.

When an incident is resolved, refresh the page and test again. Resolution is the provider’s incident state, not proof that every route, account, cache, or device has recovered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the timeline to decide what to do next

  • Investigating: avoid repeated local changes that could obscure your symptoms; save work and monitor updates.
  • Identified: read the stated scope and workaround, if any, and determine whether your feature is included.
  • Monitoring: retry cautiously while watching for regression; keep the incident open until the provider marks it resolved.
  • Resolved: if you still fail, move to access-path troubleshooting or contact support with the incident details.

Check maintenance and incident history

Look for scheduled maintenance

A quiet current summary does not rule out planned work. Open the maintenance section and check the date, time zone, affected component, expected behavior, and whether the work is upcoming, active, or completed. Maintenance can explain a short interruption that is not presented as an outage.

Review recently resolved incidents

History can reveal a just-closed event whose effects are still clearing. Atlassian’s public history page groups incident records by month, making it possible to inspect recent patterns without treating them as a reliability ranking. Check the incident’s final update and affected component rather than counting entries.

Cloudflare’s dashboard includes incident and maintenance records along with a historical uptime view. A 90-day display window is a reporting interval, not an independently measured guarantee of uninterrupted service. Atlassian support-status examples also show a 90-day window; these displays should not be compared as equivalent performance statistics.

Use historical data for context, not diagnosis

Past incidents can explain recurring timing or a recently changed component, but they do not establish that today’s failure has the same cause. Always prioritize the current incident timeline and your own observed symptoms.

Subscribe to incident updates

If the issue matters beyond a single refresh, use the official page’s notification controls. Cloudflare documents email, webhook, Slack, Discord, and Google Chat delivery for status notifications. Atlassian Status offers feed links, including Atom/RSS, on its public hub. Availability and channel choices vary by provider and can change, so use the controls shown on the current page.

  1. Open the provider’s official status page and select its subscribe, follow, or notifications control.
  2. Choose only the products, components, or regions relevant to you when granular subscriptions are offered.
  3. Select a channel you monitor during an incident, such as email or a team chat integration.
  4. Confirm the subscription if the provider sends a verification message.
  5. Return to the incident timeline for authoritative wording; notifications may summarize an update.

Cloudflare states that its status-page notifications are delivered independently of Cloudflare infrastructure. That separation can help updates reach subscribers during a provider disruption, although no notification channel should be assumed infallible.

Use status APIs and feeds when you monitor services

Most readers need the web dashboard. Developers and operations teams may prefer an official API or feed so an internal monitor can record changes or alert a team.

What the Atlassian Status API exposes

Atlassian’s API documentation describes endpoints for summary and component status, unresolved incidents, all incidents, and scheduled maintenance in upcoming, active, and all states. The API is useful when you need structured data, historical records, or automation rather than a human-readable page. Confirm authentication, rate limits, response fields, and current documentation before integrating; those details are implementation-specific and can change.

Design automation around timestamps and state

  • Store the incident identifier, component, state, and provider timestamp.
  • Deduplicate repeated updates instead of alerting on every poll.
  • Preserve the provider’s original text for the on-call person.
  • Alert on state changes and new timestamps, not merely on a non-empty incident list.
  • Keep a fallback link to the human-readable page for context.

Feeds and APIs report what the provider publishes. They do not turn a provider dashboard into a test of your users’ individual connections.

Compare status sources using practical criteria

When a service offers several dashboards, or when you are evaluating a source for a team, compare the sources on coverage and usefulness rather than on unverified reliability claims.

Decision axis Questions to ask Why it matters
Ownership Is the page controlled by the service owner or merely aggregating reports? The owner can publish component impact and mitigation details; aggregators usually cannot.
Scope Does it list the exact product, API, region, and component you use? A broad operational banner can hide a partial or regional failure.
Incident detail Are first and latest update times, impact, state, and timeline visible? Timestamped updates show whether the report is current and what has changed.
History and maintenance Can you inspect resolved incidents and planned work? Recent context prevents a false conclusion from a quiet current summary.
Notifications Are email, feeds, webhooks, or team-chat channels available? Subscriptions reduce manual refreshing during a long incident.

These criteria help you choose the most informative official source. They do not support ranking providers by reliability or update quality.

What to do when the status page is green

If the official page reports no relevant incident, treat that as a reason to investigate your access path—not as a diagnosis that the provider is healthy for everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the URL, account, workspace, and product version you intended to use.
  2. Try the same service from a second browser or private window to separate session and extension problems.
  3. Test another device on the same network, then another network such as mobile data, if available.
  4. Check whether DNS resolves the hostname and whether a VPN, proxy, firewall, or security filter changes the result.
  5. Compare the error time with the provider’s maintenance and recently resolved incident records.
  6. Contact the provider with the exact timestamp, affected component, error text, region, account identifier requested by support, and the status-page result.

Do not repeatedly retry an operation that could create duplicate payments, submissions, deployments, or account changes. Save screenshots or copied incident timestamps when the event affects important work.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Relying on the first search result

Search ranking does not establish ownership. Verify the domain and follow a provider-controlled help or documentation link.

Reading only the top-level indicator

Expand the product, component, and location lists. Distributed services can have a partial issue while the overall label remains operational.

Ignoring the newest timestamp

An incident page can remain open for hours while its status changes. Read the latest update and refresh before deciding that nothing has changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating “resolved” as a personal fix

The provider has closed its incident; your DNS cache, route, session, or account may still need attention.

Assuming uptime windows are guarantees

A 90-day chart is a display period. It is not an independently verified reliability statistic or a promise that every user had uninterrupted access.

Expecting every event to be listed

Localized, account-specific, or newly emerging problems may not match a published component or may appear after detection. Use support and access-path tests when the page does not explain your symptoms.

A repeatable checklist for “Is this service down?”

  1. Find and verify the service owner’s official status page.
  2. Open the exact product, API, region, or component involved.
  3. Read any active incident from its first update through the newest timestamp.
  4. Note the provider-defined state, impact, mitigation, and any stated workaround.
  5. Check scheduled maintenance and recent history.
  6. Subscribe through the available official channel if you need follow-up notices.
  7. If no relevant event is reported, test your browser, device, network, DNS, route, and account, then contact support with precise evidence.

This sequence gives you the fastest defensible answer without confusing a provider report with a personal connectivity test.
