Before paying for a used Samsung Galaxy, verify the exact model and regional variant, check its IMEI through a service relevant to your country or carrier, and have the seller remove their accounts and demonstrate setup. Then test the hardware and agree on the return terms. No single check—including a clean IMEI result, a visible Knox version, or a factory reset—proves that the phone is fully clear to use.
1. Confirm the exact Galaxy model and variant
On the phone, open Settings > About phone and note the model number and IMEI. Compare the model and storage capacity with the listing and any invoice or box the seller provides. A box or listing alone is not proof of what is inside it.

Look up the exact model variant for your country and intended carrier before buying. Samsung notes that device compatibility and supported features can vary by region and operating system, so two phones with similar Galaxy names may not be interchangeable: Samsung Knox device compatibility.
2. Check the IMEI using the right service
Compare the IMEI in Settings > About phone with the number displayed when you dial *#06#. If they differ, ask the seller to explain the discrepancy and provide supporting documents before you proceed. Samsung advises buyers dealing with a blacklisted-device error to contact the carrier or seller: Samsung Support: “Phone is blacklisted error”.

Use a blacklist or device-validity service that applies to the phone’s destination country and network. In India, the government’s CEIR service provides a pre-purchase device-validity check, and CEIR also explains how to retrieve an IMEI using *#06#: CEIR, Government of India. This is a country-specific service, not a worldwide database.
A clear result is a useful screening check, not a guarantee. A phone could be reported later, and an IMEI result does not establish that financing or device-management controls have been cleared.
3. Verify that it will work on your carrier
Ask which country and carrier originally sold the phone, and whether it is carrier-unlocked. The most practical check is to try a SIM or eSIM from the network you plan to use. If that is not possible, contact the intended carrier and ask it to confirm compatibility and unlock status using the exact model and IMEI.

Carrier requirements vary, and there is no universal unlock checker established here. Do not treat a country-specific blacklist service as proof that the phone is unlocked or compatible with your network.
4. Have the seller remove accounts and show a clean setup
Ask the seller to remove their Google account before factory-resetting the phone. Stay with the phone as it resets and proceeds through initial setup. Samsung explains that Factory Reset Protection (FRP) can request the previous Google account after a reset using the buttons, and recommends removing the account before transferring a reset device: Samsung UK Support: “How do I perform a factory reset on my mobile device?”
If setup asks for credentials the seller cannot provide, do not pay. A phone that reaches setup without an account prompt has passed this particular check, but that alone does not clear every possible enterprise or payment-related control.

5. Understand what a Knox check does—and does not—show
To see the Knox version, open Settings > About phone > Software information. Samsung documents this path as a way to verify whether the device is secured by Knox: Samsung Knox: “Verify if your device is Secured by Knox”.
A Knox version tells you about the device’s Knox security platform. It is not an IMEI blacklist result, proof of carrier unlock, or proof that no administrator or payment restriction applies. Samsung’s Knox Guard documentation describes administrator controls such as device locking and subscription-related actions, but does not provide a public buyer lookup: Samsung Knox Guard: “View device details”. If the phone displays a management or payment notice, require the seller to have the responsible organization or provider clear it before you buy.
6. Inspect the screen, body, and essential functions
Carry out a hands-on check in good light. The checks below are practical buyer inspections, not a Samsung-certified diagnostic procedure.

- Display and touch: Show plain white and gray screens to look for cracks, dead pixels, uneven color, and burn-in. Drag your finger across the entire panel to check touch response at the edges and center.
- Body and buttons: Look for bent edges, gaps in the frame, corrosion, or impact damage. Press each physical button and check vibration.
- Cameras and audio: Test the front and rear cameras, flash, speakers, and microphone. Capture a photo and make a short recording if practical.
- Connections and charging: Connect a charging cable and check the port, then test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a call or mobile-data connection on the intended carrier where possible.

Use the phone briefly and ask whether the battery or other parts have been replaced, whether the phone has had repairs or water exposure, and whether the seller can provide proof of purchase. Ask for the return window and any warranty terms in writing before paying.

8. Compare listings and keep a record
When choosing between phones, weigh the exact model and carrier fit alongside the account/setup result, documented repair and battery history, physical condition, seller proof, return period, warranty, and likely repair costs. A single Knox check or blacklist lookup is not a sound basis for ranking two listings.
Keep the listing, seller messages, receipt, and exact IMEI with your purchase records; do not post the IMEI publicly. Prefer a traceable payment and a return option when available. These steps reduce risk but cannot guarantee recovery if a deal goes wrong.
