A historic low shows what happened before—not what Steam will charge next time.
What a price-history check can—and cannot—tell you
A current Steam discount is easier to judge when you can see the game’s earlier prices. A history chart can show whether today’s offer is close to the lowest recorded price, how often discounts have appeared, and whether a supposedly large percentage reduction is actually unusual for that title.

It cannot promise that the game will return to its previous low, or tell you the exact price of a future sale. SteamDB explains that publishers choose discounts and that it cannot know which games will be discounted in an upcoming sale or what their prices will be. Past sale appearances can inform expectations, but that is a probability-based judgment rather than a forecast.
Use price history as evidence for a decision, not as a guarantee. The most useful comparison is between the offer you can buy today and earlier prices for the same product, in the same region and currency.

Check a game’s Steam price history on SteamDB
- Open SteamDB and search the exact title. Use the search field on SteamDB’s price-history service: SteamDB Price History & Price Tracker. Search for the complete game name rather than a shortened phrase.
- Confirm the result. Check the title, developer or publisher information shown on the page, and whether you opened the base game, a deluxe edition, a soundtrack, a bundle, or downloadable content. Similar names and separate packages can have completely different histories.
- Open the title’s price-history view. SteamDB says it detects Steam price changes within minutes of Steam updating prices. That makes it useful for checking a live promotion, but the chart is still a record of detected changes rather than a promise about future pricing.
- Set the relevant currency or region. Select the currency and regional view that match the Steam account you intend to use, where the page offers that choice. Do not compare a dollar value with a historical low shown in euros or another currency without checking the regional context and conversion.
- Record the current offer. Note the product name, edition, displayed price, discount, and the dates for which the offer is valid on Steam. If the store page and tracker display different values, treat that as a reason to verify the region, package and update time before buying.
- Compare the chart with today’s price. Look for the lowest recorded price in the selected currency, the dates when it occurred, and the prices reached during earlier sales. A current price that matches or nearly matches the historical low is a stronger buy signal than a large percentage discount from an unusually high list price.

How to read the chart without drawing the wrong conclusion
Separate the list price from the sale price
Steam can show a discount as a percentage of the current list price. The history chart lets you see whether that list price and discount combination is typical. For example, a 25% reduction may be routine for a title that frequently reaches 40% or 50% off, while a smaller reduction may be notable if it is close to the recorded low.
Use the actual currency amount as your comparison point. Percentage discounts are calculated against the store’s stated list price; they do not tell you how the amount compares with the game’s own past prices.
Identify the historic low and its date
The lowest value on the chart is the cheapest recorded price for the selected product, region and currency in the available history. Write down its date as well as the amount. A low from many years ago may be less useful than a recent low if the product, regional pricing or edition has changed.
Do not treat an old low as an entitlement to that price again. Publishers control discounts, and SteamDB explicitly says it cannot predict a particular game’s next sale price.
Look for a pattern of sale appearances
Mark the dates when the game reached a substantial discount. Repeated appearances around major Steam promotions can indicate that waiting is plausible; a single isolated low provides much weaker evidence. The chart can show that a discount happened, but it does not establish why it happened or whether the same promotion will recur.

Check whether the chart reflects the package you want
A base game, deluxe edition, bundle, soundtrack and expansion are separate products. A bundle’s low is not evidence for the base game’s low, and a deluxe edition’s price cannot be used to judge the standard edition. Confirm the package name before comparing any amount.

Make prices genuinely comparable
Most mistakes come from comparing unlike prices. Run this checklist before deciding that today’s offer is a bargain.
- Title: Match the exact game, including subtitles and similarly named releases.
- Edition: Match standard, deluxe, complete, early-access and other editions. Include or exclude DLC consistently.
- Region: Use the country or regional store associated with the account making the purchase.
- Currency: Compare amounts in the same currency whenever possible. A currency conversion can move the apparent ranking, and regional pricing may not follow exchange rates.
- Package contents: Check whether a bundle contains items you already own or content you do not want. A lower per-item price may not make an unwanted bundle a better purchase.
- Timing: Note when the chart changed and when the Steam promotion ends. SteamDB reports detecting price changes within minutes, but a page you opened earlier may not reflect a very recent store update.
- Final checkout amount: Review Steam’s purchase screen before submitting payment so the amount and selected product match your comparison.
If any item on the list is uncertain, pause the comparison. “Lowest price” is meaningful only when the product and market are the same.
A practical buy-now-or-wait decision
Use the following sequence after you have confirmed the chart.
Buy now when the evidence supports the timing
- Today’s amount is at or very near the recorded low for your currency and region.
- The game is the correct edition and includes the content you actually want.
- You intend to play it soon, so the value of immediate access outweighs the possibility of a later discount.
- The current promotion’s end date is close and waiting would risk losing a price you consider acceptable.
Wait when the potential saving matters more
- The current price is well above recent lows.
- The chart shows substantial discounts recurring often enough that another opportunity seems plausible.
- You have a backlog and no immediate need to start the game.
- The current offer is for a bundle or edition you have not fully compared with the standard product.
There is no universally correct waiting period. A tracker can show historical behavior, but the publisher determines the next discount. Decide in advance what price you would be happy to pay; if today’s amount meets that threshold and you will use the game, buying can be rational even when it is not the all-time low.

- Open the game’s Steam store page.
- Select the option to add it to your wishlist.
- Keep Steam notifications enabled on the account and device where you expect to receive them.
- When a sale alert arrives, open the store page again and repeat the title, edition, currency and region checks.
A wishlist notification tells you that a sale exists; it does not mean the current amount is the historic low. Use the alert as a prompt to inspect the chart, not as a substitute for it.
Price history versus your own Steam purchase history
A public price chart and your account’s purchase record answer different questions. The chart asks, “What prices has this product reached?” Your account history asks, “What did I personally buy and pay?”
Steam Support says you can view your own purchases by signing in, opening the menu under your account name, selecting Account Details, and opening purchase history. Use that record to verify a past transaction, identify the edition you bought, or check whether you already own content before considering a bundle.
Your purchase history is not a replacement for a market-wide chart: it contains only your transactions and cannot show prices you did not pay. Conversely, a public chart does not reveal your personal ownership or payment record.
When another tracker is useful
SteamDB is focused on Steam pricing. A service that tracks multiple stores can be useful when you are willing to buy outside Steam, but compare services on the dimensions that affect your decision rather than assuming one database is complete.

SteamDB’s FAQ notes that historic Steam prices for US, UK and EU regions before 2016 were credited to IsThereAnyDeal. Treat that statement as historical coverage context, not proof that every current title, package or region is complete; check the specific title page before relying on an old record.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Choosing the wrong search result
Symptom: The chart shows an implausibly high or low amount, or the package contents do not match the store page.

Mixing currencies or regions
Symptom: Today’s price appears lower than the chart’s low, but the figures are in different currencies or countries.
Fix: Switch the chart to the currency and region used by the purchasing account. If that view is unavailable, label the comparison as approximate rather than calling it a historic low.
Comparing a bundle with a single game
Symptom: A bundle appears to beat the game’s historic low, but you are unsure what it includes.

Assuming a past low will return
Symptom: You postpone a purchase indefinitely because the chart contains a cheaper old price.
Fix: Set a personal maximum price and a time horizon. Historical data can inform that threshold, but publishers set future discounts and no tracker can guarantee a repeat.
Trusting a stale page during a live sale
Symptom: Steam’s store page and the tracker disagree shortly after a promotion starts or changes.

Fix: Refresh both pages, confirm the selected region and edition, and check the promotion’s end time. SteamDB says it detects price changes within minutes, so a short delay can occur while a store update propagates.
A repeatable five-minute routine
- Open the Steam store page and copy the exact game and edition name.
- Search that name on SteamDB and open the matching product.
- Select your currency and region, then note the current amount and recorded low.
- Inspect the dates and frequency of earlier discounts, paying attention to recent sales rather than only the oldest low.
- Buy if the amount meets your threshold and the product fits your needs; otherwise wishlist it and wait for a notification, then reassess the new offer.
This routine keeps the decision tied to comparable evidence while leaving the final timing choice to you.
