Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore paying for a used or imported Samsung Galaxy, get the complete model number and IMEI, confirm the phone is unlocked, run the IMEI through the destination carrier’s official bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker, and compare the exact variant’s bands and calling features with that carrier. A family name such as “Galaxy S23” is not specific enough: variants can differ by release year, colour, carrier configuration, and sales region.
What you must verify before buying
Use five separate checks rather than relying on an “unlocked” label:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Exact model number: identifies the particular product variant, not merely the Galaxy family.
- Sales region: indicates where that variant was intended to be sold and which firmware, bands, and carrier configuration it may have.
- IMEI: the device identifier a carrier can use to assess eligibility, lock status, and sometimes blacklist status.
- Unlock status: confirms that the phone is not restricted to its original carrier.
- Network and feature support: confirms the model’s LTE/5G bands and features such as VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, and eSIM on your carrier.
These checks answer different questions. An IMEI can pass a carrier’s eligibility test while the phone still lacks a band used in your area. A factory-unlocked phone can still miss a carrier-specific calling feature. Conversely, a model with the right bands can remain unusable if it is locked or blacklisted.

Find the full Samsung model number
On the phone: Settings > About phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone. On some software versions it may be under a similarly named device-information page.
- Record the complete value beside Model number, including every letter, number, slash, and suffix.
- Also record the IMEI and serial number shown on the same screen, keeping each identifier in its own note.
Samsung’s Canada guidance documents this route for devices sold in Canada and notes that screens can vary elsewhere. The menu wording and available fields can therefore differ by country, model, and software version.

Other ways to obtain the identifier
- Dialer code: open the Phone app and enter
*#06#. Samsung’s Ireland guidance documents this as a way to display IMEI details. Some phones, software builds, or carrier configurations may not respond to the code. - Samsung Members: a registered device can show identifying information in Samsung Members. The seller may need to open the app while signed in.
- Original packaging: ask for a clear photo of the box label. Match its model number and IMEI to the handset rather than accepting a box alone as proof.
- Device documentation: an invoice or carrier record can corroborate the model, but the phone’s own About phone page is the best match for the unit you will receive.
Ask a remote seller for photographs or a live video showing Settings > About phone, the box label if available, and the IMEI screen. Do not publish an IMEI in a public listing; send it privately to the prospective buyer or directly to the carrier checker.
Model number, IMEI, and serial number are not interchangeable
| Identifier | What it identifies | Why it matters before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Model number | A product variant or range, which can vary by release year, colour, carrier, and other factors. | Lets you look up the exact hardware, bands, regional configuration, and supported features. |
| IMEI | A unique identifier for the individual cellular device. Samsung’s Ireland guidance describes it as 15 digits. | Lets the intended carrier check network eligibility and lock status; some carrier tools also report blacklist status. |
| Serial number | A separate Samsung device identifier used for support, warranty, and inventory purposes. | Useful for matching the handset to documentation, but it is not the number normally used for a carrier compatibility check. |
Dual-SIM phones can display more than one IMEI. Submit the IMEI associated with the SIM or eSIM line you plan to use, and keep the other IMEI for the carrier if its checker requests it.
How to check the phone’s sales region
Why the region matters
Samsung can sell phones with the same family name in multiple markets. Regional variants may differ in radio bands, firmware, carrier software, eSIM availability, preinstalled apps, warranty coverage, and the features that a carrier enables. Samsung also explains that branding, network configuration, carrier features, and system apps can change when an unlocked Galaxy is moved to another carrier with a SIM or eSIM.
What to ask the seller
- “What is the complete model number shown under About phone?”
- “For which country or sales region was this unit originally sold?”
- “Was it bought directly from Samsung, from a carrier, or imported?”
- “Has it ever been repaired or had its motherboard replaced?”
- “Can you provide the IMEI privately so I can run the destination carrier’s checker?”
Match the answer to evidence: the About phone screen, box label, purchase receipt, or the original carrier record. If the seller cannot identify the sales region, treat that as unresolved rather than guessing from a suffix.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Do not rely on a universal suffix decoder
Samsung’s published guidance establishes that variants and carrier configurations differ, but it does not provide a single region-code rule that works for every Galaxy model. A suffix that appears to indicate one market on one generation may not have the same meaning on another. Use the complete model number with Samsung or the seller, then validate it through the carrier’s own compatibility system.
Confirm the phone is unlocked
What “unlocked” means
An unlocked phone is not restricted to the carrier that first sold it. That status is necessary for most bring-your-own-phone purchases, but it does not prove that the hardware supports every network or feature.
Samsung states that unlock requirements vary by carrier and are not dictated by Samsung. The original carrier may require an account in good standing, a paid-off device, a minimum period of service, or other conditions. Ask that carrier to confirm the IMEI’s unlock status; do not accept a seller’s “it worked with my SIM” statement as the only evidence.

Practical checks when you have the handset
- Insert a SIM from a different carrier, if you have one, and see whether the phone accepts it and registers on the network.
- Check the phone for a message requesting a network-unlock code. Do not repeatedly guess codes.
- In Settings, inspect mobile-network or SIM-manager information for carrier restrictions, while recognising that menu labels vary.
- Use the destination carrier’s IMEI checker; its result is more useful than an ambiguous software label.
A test SIM is only a quick indication. It may not reveal a blacklist, missing 5G band, or unavailable VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling profile. Keep the carrier result as the deciding record.

Run the destination carrier’s official IMEI checker
Why this is the decisive pre-payment step
Carrier databases can combine the IMEI with network policy, reported loss or theft, financing restrictions, and supported device profiles. T-Mobile describes its IMEI process as the fastest and most accurate way to determine compatibility with its network and check whether a device is locked or unlocked. Rogers separately directs BYOD customers to check VoLTE support, blacklist status, and unlock status. Those statements apply to those carriers and should not be generalized to another country or network.
Exact sequence
- Choose the carrier and plan you will actually use, including the country and service area.
- Open that carrier’s official BYOD or compatibility checker.
- Enter the complete IMEI exactly as displayed. If the phone has two IMEIs, use the one requested for your planned SIM or eSIM and retain the other.
- Save the result showing compatibility, lock status, and any blacklist or account warning. Take a screenshot with the date.
- If the tool asks for model details, enter the full model number rather than only “Galaxy” and a series name.
- Contact the carrier when the result is “unknown,” “not supported,” or inconsistent with the seller’s claim. Give the agent the model number, IMEI, and intended location.
Run this check before sending a deposit or completing a marketplace transaction. A checker result can change if the IMEI is later reported lost, financed, or blocked, so use a return window and keep the seller’s written description.
Compare bands and carrier features for your location
Frequency-band check
After the IMEI passes, compare the exact model’s published LTE and 5G bands with the bands deployed by the carrier where you will use the phone. Check the frequencies used in your city, rural areas, and travel destinations rather than looking only at the national list.
Samsung’s unlocked-device guidance specifically says to verify that the phone supports the intended carrier’s frequency bands. A model can connect on one band yet have weaker coverage, lower capacity, or no service in places where another band is required.

Voice and data features
Ask the carrier whether it supports the exact model for:
- VoLTE: required by many modern networks for voice calls, especially where older 3G service has been retired.
- Wi-Fi Calling: may require both carrier approval and a compatible regional firmware profile.
- 5G: confirm the specific 5G bands and whether the carrier enables 5G on imported or non-carrier variants.
- eSIM: availability can vary by model, region, software, and carrier even when the hardware family supports eSIM elsewhere.
- Carrier aggregation and other enhancements: these can affect speed and coverage and may not be available on every regional build.
Do not infer feature support from a phone’s marketing page for another country. Ask the carrier to validate the complete model number and the service address or region.
A complete pre-purchase workflow
For a used phone
- Request the model number, sales region, IMEI, purchase source, and unlock confirmation.
- Compare the model number and IMEI shown in About phone with the seller’s photos and box label.
- Run the IMEI through your carrier’s official checker and save the result.
- Check blacklist and financing warnings where the carrier exposes them.
- Compare LTE/5G bands and confirm VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, 5G, and eSIM requirements.
- Test the handset with your SIM or eSIM during the return period, including a call, mobile data, SMS, and Wi-Fi Calling if you need it.
For a new imported phone
- Obtain the exact model number and intended sales region from the seller before ordering.
- Confirm whether the phone is factory unlocked or was unlocked by a carrier; Samsung says phones bought directly from Samsung.com are factory unlocked, but that does not establish band or feature compatibility.
- Ask the destination carrier to validate the model and, once available, run the IMEI through its checker.
- Review warranty and service limitations for the country where you will use the phone.
- Do not complete the purchase until the seller provides a return path if the carrier rejects the IMEI or a required feature fails.

Common failure cases and what to do
The seller gives only “Galaxy S22” or “Galaxy A54”
Ask for the complete model number from About phone. Different variants can have different radios and carrier profiles, so do not proceed on the family name.

The IMEI checker says “not found”
Re-enter the digits, try the other IMEI on a dual-SIM phone, and ask the carrier to check manually. A newly released or imported model may not yet be in the carrier’s database. If the carrier cannot confirm eligibility in writing, treat compatibility as unverified.

The phone is unlocked but has no VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling
Unlocking removes a network restriction; it does not add carrier firmware profiles or unsupported bands. Ask whether the carrier permits that exact regional model. If the feature is essential, choose a variant the carrier explicitly supports.
The model passes in one country but not another
Carrier bands, certification, firmware, and device databases are country-specific. Repeat the checks with the carrier and service address where the phone will actually be used.
The seller refuses to share an IMEI before payment
Do not send a non-refundable payment. A seller can mask most digits in a public post and provide the full IMEI privately for the official checker. Refusal leaves lock, blacklist, and compatibility status unresolved.

Pause the purchase. Photograph the handset’s About phone screen and ask for an explanation. A mismatched box may be harmless after a replacement, but it prevents reliable verification and should be resolved before payment.
Safety and privacy when handling IMEIs
- Share the IMEI only with the seller, carrier, or official checker; avoid public listings and social posts.
- Never publish a full IMEI together with personal account information.
- Use the carrier’s official domain or app rather than an unfamiliar third-party checker that requests payment or identity documents.
- Keep screenshots of the result, the listing, and the seller’s promises until the return period ends.
- If a carrier reports a blacklist or financing issue, stop the transaction and ask the seller to resolve it through the original carrier.
What counts as a safe buying decision?
Proceed only when all of the following are true:
- You have the complete model number and a documented sales region.
- The phone’s About phone screen matches the seller’s model and IMEI information.
- The destination carrier’s official checker accepts the IMEI and reports an acceptable lock status.
- No blacklist, loss, theft, or financing restriction is reported.
- The exact model has the LTE/5G bands needed in your locations.
- The carrier confirms any required VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, 5G, and eSIM features.
- The seller offers a practical return or refund route if the phone fails the live test.
If one item is unknown, the phone is not yet verified. “Unlocked,” “international version,” and “works worldwide” are descriptions, not substitutes for the model, IMEI, band, and carrier checks.
