Before you buy, check the retailer’s current price-match, price-adjustment, and return terms for the exact item, seller, purchase channel, and location you plan to use. Confirm what qualifies, when you must make a request or return, what proof is required, and whether fees or exclusions apply. Save the listing and the policy wording you relied on; a saved record can document what was displayed, but it does not guarantee eligibility or an exception.
Start with the policy that applies to your transaction
Open the retailer’s own policy or help page, then check the product listing before relying on a headline such as “price match” or “easy returns.” The policy tells you the general conditions; the listing shows details that can change the answer, especially who sells the item and how it is fulfilled.

- Identify the transaction. Note the item, the retailer or marketplace seller named on its listing, whether you will buy online, in an app, or in a store, and your location. The applicable rules may differ across sellers, channels, and geographies.
- Find the relevant terms. Search the retailer’s site for “price match,” “price adjustment,” “return,” “final sale,” “marketplace,” and “restocking fee.” Follow links to exclusions or detailed conditions instead of relying only on the policy headline.
- Check the listing’s seller and fulfillment details. A product displayed on a retailer’s site is not necessarily sold by the retailer itself. Marketplace seller items may have different price-match or return terms.
- Check the policy again near purchase. Retailer terms can change. Make sure the wording you read is current and applies to the place and channel where you will buy.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Online Shopping consumer guidance advises shoppers to check price-matching rules, possible credits or refunds after a price drop, return deadlines, return costs, restocking fees, and whether sale items follow different terms. It also says: “The site must say whether you’re able to return the item for a full refund.” Treat that as a reason to look for the actual terms, not as a guarantee that every item can be returned for a full refund.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake the policy check specific to the transaction you are about to make. A general store policy may not answer whether a marketplace seller’s item qualifies, whether an app purchase follows the same rule as an in-store purchase, or whether a location-specific exception applies. Check the policy and the listing together, and look for any separate seller terms or linked exclusions that govern the exact offer.

Separate a price match from a post-purchase adjustment
These are different questions. A price match generally concerns a lower qualifying price available elsewhere, or another price the retailer agrees to match under its rules. A price adjustment asks whether the retailer will credit or refund some difference if a qualifying price falls after you buy. A policy may cover one, both, or neither.
Before placing an order, look for the policy’s answers to each question separately:
- Does the retailer match another seller’s price, its own store or online price, or an eligible promotion?
- Can you ask for a credit or refund if the price falls after your purchase?
- Does the request need to be made before purchase, or is there a post-purchase window?
- Does the same rule apply to your purchase channel, location, item, and seller?
Do not assume that a retailer will match a competitor simply because it offers some kind of price matching. Walmart’s current U.S. policy, for example, describes in-store matching to qualifying Walmart.com prices, but says it does not match competitor prices. It also says Walmart.com does not provide price matching, including for its own later price decreases. That example illustrates why the specific kind of price change matters.

A stated post-purchase period is not necessarily the same as a return period, unless the retailer’s terms say it is. Best Buy, for example, ties qualifying post-purchase requests to its return and exchange period; Target’s current policy allows qualifying requests at purchase or within 14 days. Those details are not interchangeable, so use the policy for your retailer and transaction rather than treating either example as a general rule.
Verify that the lower-priced offer qualifies
Retailers commonly set conditions around the identity of the item, the seller, the offer, and the item’s availability. A lower number on a search result is not enough by itself. Read the eligibility rules and check that the offer satisfies them at the time you plan to request a match.
Compare the exact item
Check the product attributes the retailer says must be identical. Depending on the policy, differences in brand, model, size, color, or quantity can make an offer ineligible. Target’s current U.S. policy specifies identical-item attributes; Best Buy’s current guarantee requires an identical product. Do not treat products as equivalent just because they look similar or perform a similar function.
Use the product details shown on both listings, not just the product name or photograph. Compare the model or item identifier, size, color, quantity, and any other attributes named in the retailer’s conditions. If the lower offer is a bundle, has a different quantity, or is a refurbished or pre-owned version, check the exclusion wording rather than assuming it is the same item. A visual resemblance does not settle eligibility.

Confirm availability and verification
Look for requirements that the lower-priced product be in stock, immediately available, or verifiable when you request the match. Target says its qualifying price must be valid and verifiable at the time of the request. Best Buy requires an identical, immediately available product. Walmart’s in-store policy requires the identical item to be in stock online when the request is made. A past advertisement, an unavailable listing, or a price that cannot be checked may not meet those conditions.
Check the lower listing as close as possible to the time you submit a request. A search result or old advertisement might show a price that no longer appears on the live offer, while the policy may require that the price still be valid when reviewed. Capture the current details in the form the retailer accepts, but keep in mind that a saved image cannot make an expired or unavailable offer qualify.
Check the seller and the offer type
Read the exclusions for marketplace sellers, clearance, bundles, coupons, gift cards, membership pricing, and limited-time promotions. These categories are not automatically eligible: the retailer’s wording determines which offers count. For example, Best Buy excludes marketplace items and certain offers; Target lists exclusions including offers, coupons, clearance, and refurbished or pre-owned items; Walmart excludes third-party sellers and specified promotions from its described in-store matching policy.
Also check which competitor sellers and sales channels are accepted, if the policy matches competitors at all. A qualifying seller list may be narrower than the set of sites where you can find the product. If the policy does not clearly include the lower-priced offer or seller, ask the retailer before purchase and retain its answer.
Do not infer eligibility from the fact that an offer is advertised publicly or is available to you. The policy may distinguish between regular prices and coupon or membership offers, and it may exclude a particular promotion or seller category. Read the specific list of eligible sellers and excluded offers; if the terms use a broad phrase such as “certain offers,” follow any linked explanation or ask the retailer to apply the rule to the precise listing.
Find the deadline and proof requirements
A policy is only useful if you can act within its deadline and provide the required evidence. Look for the request window, the starting point for counting it, and the records the retailer requires. A deadline may differ between a pre-purchase match and a post-purchase adjustment.
As current U.S. examples, Target says qualifying requests can be made at purchase or within 14 days, subject to its criteria. Best Buy says post-purchase requests may be made during the return and exchange period when all criteria are met, and that multiple requests may be made during that period if the criteria continue to be met. These are retailer-specific terms, not standard industry deadlines.

Find out whether you need a current live listing, an advertisement, a receipt, a packing slip, an order number, or another form of proof. Target requires the original receipt or packing slip for a price adjustment. Best Buy advises customers to provide information about the current lower price. Follow the policy’s exact requirements; do not assume a screenshot will replace a record the retailer specifically requests.

They do not guarantee approval: the offer still has to satisfy the retailer’s terms when the request is reviewed.
Assess the return before you rely on it
Check the return terms for the item and seller you intend to buy from, not just the retailer’s general return page. The practical questions are whether you can return it, by when, in what condition, by which route, and at what cost.
- Deadline: Find the last eligible return date and how the retailer defines the applicable period. Do not infer a deadline from another product category or purchase channel.
- Condition and contents: Check requirements for the item’s condition, packaging, accessories, or included components. The policy may specify conditions that affect acceptance.
- Return route: Find whether the item must be returned to a store, shipped, or handled through the seller. Marketplace purchases may have their own instructions.
- Costs and deductions: Check return shipping costs, restocking fees, and any other stated charges. A return being permitted does not necessarily mean it is free.
- Exceptions: Look for final-sale or sale-item rules, product-specific restrictions, and exclusions that could make an otherwise eligible purchase nonreturnable or subject to different terms.
- Refund details: Check how the refund is calculated and issued, including whether a bundle or promotion affects the amount. Do not assume a return produces a full refund unless the applicable terms say so.
The FTC specifically advises shoppers to check the number of days allowed, shipping costs, restocking fees, and differences for sale items. Those details can change the real cost of buying an item that you might return.
Think through the return as a sequence, not just a yes-or-no question. First establish the last date you can start or complete the return under the applicable terms. Then confirm the required condition and whether packaging, accessories, or other included components must be returned. Finally, check how to send or hand over the item and what charges may be deducted. If you are buying from a marketplace seller, use the return route and instructions that apply to that seller rather than assuming the retailer’s ordinary store-return process covers it.

A listed return period also does not, by itself, tell you how much money will come back or how it will be issued. The terms may treat sale items, bundles, or promotions differently, and shipping or restocking charges may affect the amount. Look for the stated refund method and any deductions before deciding that the purchase is effectively risk-free to try.

| Retailer | Price policy described on its current U.S. page | Important conditions or limits | Return information in the cited policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target | Its Price Match Guarantee covers a qualifying Target purchase against a lower identical item at Target.com, in Target stores, or through an eligible Target Circle deal, at purchase or within 14 days. | The price must be valid and verifiable when requested. The page specifies item attributes, proof, and exclusions. App and Target.com price matching is unavailable in Alaska and Hawaii. Listed exclusions include offers, coupons, clearance, refurbished or pre-owned items, and other categories. | Not stated in the price-match policy details summarized here; check Target’s return terms for the specific item and transaction. |
| Best Buy | Its guarantee covers eligible new products sold by Best Buy and named qualified competitors. It allows qualifying post-purchase requests during the return and exchange period; multiple requests may be made during that period if the criteria continue to be met. | The product must be identical and immediately available. Marketplace items and certain offers are excluded. Puerto Rico has separate posted terms. | Not stated in the price-match policy details summarized here; check Best Buy’s return policy for the specific item and transaction. |
| Walmart | Its policy describes in-store matching to qualifying Walmart.com prices. It says Walmart.com does not provide price matching, including for competitors or its own subsequent price decreases. | The identical item must be in stock online for an in-store request. The policy excludes competitor prices, third-party sellers, specified promotions, and other offers. | The policy gives a general 90-day return or exchange period, subject to exceptions. Marketplace seller items may have different rules. |
The 14-day Target period and Walmart’s general 90-day period are policy terms on the respective U.S. pages reviewed on October 11, 2026, not guarantees for every product or purchase. Each retailer’s conditions and exceptions still apply, and current wording may change.
Use the examples as a prompt for what to verify, not as a shortcut around the policy page. Target’s 14-day window does not establish the adjustment deadline at another store. Walmart’s in-store matching terms do not mean an online Walmart purchase receives the same treatment. Best Buy’s named qualified competitors and post-purchase rules likewise apply only under its stated criteria. Confirm the rule that governs the actual seller, channel, item, and location you will use.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Save records and ask before buying if a term is unclear
Keep a small record of what you checked. Save the item listing with its seller and fulfillment details, the relevant policy or exclusion wording, and any order record or receipt after purchase. If you are considering a price match, retain the lower live offer in the form the policy accepts. These records can help show what was displayed when you made a decision, but they do not override published conditions or compel a retailer to grant a request.
If you cannot tell whether the seller, promotion, or product qualifies, contact the retailer before completing the purchase. Ask a specific question that includes the item identifier, seller, offer, channel, and location. For example: “Does this exact item, sold by this seller at this price, qualify for a price match in this channel and location? If the price falls after purchase, what deadline and proof apply?” For return terms, ask what last date, item condition, shipping cost, and fees apply to the exact listing. Keep the reply with the policy and listing records.
When saving a policy, retain the relevant passage or page address along with the date you checked it. Keep the product listing and any lower-price proof separately so the seller, item, and offer are identifiable. This is useful documentation if you later need to describe what you saw, but retailer verification and eligibility conditions still govern the outcome.
Use a final pre-purchase checklist
- I have identified the seller, fulfillment method, purchase channel, and location.
- I have read the current price-match and price-adjustment terms separately.
- I know which sellers, products, channels, and offer types qualify or are excluded.
- I have checked exact-item identity, availability, request deadline, and proof requirements.
- I know the return deadline, condition rules, return route, shipping cost, fees, and sale or promotion exceptions.
- I have saved the listing and relevant terms, and asked the retailer about any ambiguity before buying.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check a retailer’s price-match and return policies before I buy?
Open the retailer’s current policy pages, then check the exact listing for the named seller and fulfillment method. Read the price-match, price-adjustment, return, and exclusion terms; verify the eligible item, sellers, offers, deadlines, proof, return route, and fees. Save the listing and relevant terms, and ask the retailer about anything unclear before checkout.
Can I get a lower price after I have already bought the item?
Possibly, but a price match and a post-purchase adjustment are different benefits, and a retailer may offer one, both, or neither. Check the applicable deadline and criteria. Target’s current U.S. policy allows qualifying requests at purchase or within 14 days; Best Buy allows qualifying post-purchase requests during its return and exchange period. These examples do not set a standard deadline for other retailers.
Best Value
Does a retailer have to match a competitor’s price?
No. Price-match rules depend on the retailer’s current terms, and a policy may match only certain sellers, channels, or its own prices. Walmart’s current U.S. policy describes in-store matching to qualifying Walmart.com prices and says it does not match competitor prices. Check the specific policy rather than assuming a lower competitor offer qualifies.
What proof should I keep for a price-match request?
Follow the retailer’s stated requirements. They may call for a current verifiable listing or lower-price information, and a post-purchase request may require a receipt, packing slip, or order record. Target requires the original receipt or packing slip for a price adjustment; Best Buy advises providing information about the current lower price. A screenshot alone may not replace a required record.
Are marketplace purchases covered by the retailer’s usual return policy?
Not necessarily. The seller named on the listing matters, and marketplace items may follow different price-match or return terms. Check the specific seller’s instructions and the retailer’s marketplace exclusions before buying. Walmart’s policy, for example, says Marketplace seller items may have different return rules; Best Buy excludes marketplace items from its described price guarantee.
Does a return mean I will get a full refund?
Not automatically. Check whether the item is returnable, the deadline and condition requirements, the return shipping cost, any restocking fee, and whether a sale, bundle, or promotion changes the refund. The FTC’s Online Shopping guidance says a site must state whether an item can be returned for a full refund; verify the terms for your exact item and transaction.
Are Target’s 14-day and Walmart’s 90-day periods general rules?
No. They are terms on those retailers’ current U.S. policy pages, subject to exceptions. Target’s 14 days concerns qualifying price requests; Walmart’s 90 days is a general return or exchange period subject to exceptions. Neither figure establishes the rule for another retailer or every item, seller, or purchase channel.
The Bottom Line
Before checkout, verify the exact seller, item, channel, and location against the retailer’s current price-match, price-adjustment, and return terms. Check eligibility, proof, deadlines, shipping, and fees separately, then save the listing and policy details. Treat retailer examples and saved records as guidance and documentation—not a promise that a request or return will qualify.
Quick Recap
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
